이 글은 現在까지 發表된 處容說話 및 處容歌에 對한 論文을 수합하여 이를 몇 개 項目으로 分類하여 整理하고 사이사이에 필자의의견을 보탠 것이다. 筆者의 能力의 限界로 말미암아 모든 자료를 수집할 수 없었으나, 약 330 여편의 논문을 검토하고 분야별 주요한 업적을 망라한 것이다. 그 분야는 국어학 민속학 문학 설화 역사 등이다. 원래 文學作品의 解釋이란 다양하기 때문에 筆者들의 완곡한 主張과 견해들을 집어 내는 일도 그리 쉬운 作業은 아니었다.어쨌든, 우리 民族傳統文化의 가장 요체라할 수 있는 新羅의 處容歌는 處容自體가 승려이든, 무당이든, 地方 豪族이든, 도래인이든 화랑이든 간에 우리의 精神史的 맥락 속에서 길이 記憶되고 우리 先人의 情緖를 오늘에까지 이어 오는데 커다란 役割을 하고 있다. 그리고 우리의 古代社會라 할 수 있는 新羅의 社會ㆍ歷史ㆍ言語들이 더욱 硏究되고 學問間의 상호보완이 이루어질 때 이 處容歌의 原來의 모습은 더욱 우리 가까이 다가 올 것으로 생각된다.

The thesis is organized into the several categories with my own comments and opinions while comprising a lot of research papers published up to the present time on Choyong's Tale and Song. It was impossible to compile all the related materials because of my limited academic ability, but approximately 330 academic papers in such fields as Korean language study, folklore, literature, legendary literature, and history, were checked over and their essential parts were extracted for my paper. Usually different readers interpret a literary work differently and this gave me a hard time picking up the ideas and opinions connoted in their academic writings on Choyong. The Song of Choyong of the ancient Silla Kingdom, which I think is the essence of Korean traditional culture, has been keeping its life in the moral and spiritual history of Korea and has played an important role in linking the sentiments of Korean ancestors to their descendants today regardless of Choyong's social position-- whether Choyong was a monk, a shaman, a lord of manor in the countryside, an alien from abroad, or a member of the Flower of Youth in Silla Dynasty. The original color of Choyong Song will be revealed more clearly with more study about the language, history, and society of Silla, one of the Korean ancient Kingdoms.
