현대시는 후기산업사회의 인간 소외나 인간성 상실, 정보화 시대의 낯선 환경과 경험 조건들에 새로운 방식으로 대응하지 않으면 안 된다. 따라서 스스로의 정체성을 유지하기 위해서는 변화와 새로움을 중심적인 가치로 삼는다. 모더니즘 시에 있어서의 이 변화는 ‘부정성’을 전제로 한다.김춘수 시에 있어서 환유의 형성 방식은 한국의 모더니즘 시의 언어관을 살피는데 매우 중요하다.『처용단장』의 무의미시에서의 환유는 언어 기호의 물질성과 단절(depaysement), 주체와 대상과의 거리 소멸, 세계와 자아의 변용 등으로 나타난다. 이러한 특징들은 언어 기표의 낯선 조합이라는 ‘형태주의’ 측면에서 살펴볼 수 있다.김춘수의 무의미시에 나타나는 언어는 하나의 기호, 즉 물질로서 각 기호들 간에는 아무런 연관이 없다. 단지 이 기호들은 ‘리듬’이나 ‘서술적 이미지’만으로 발현된다. 이러한 리듬과 서술적 이미지들 간에는 서로 단절되어 있어 충돌과 해체를 동반하고 이 충돌과 해체는 낯선 이미지나 엉뚱한 이미지들의 결합에 의해 생겨난다. 이로 인해 환유는 새로운 영역을 만들어 나간다.또한 주체와 대상과의 관계를 보면, 무의미시에서 나타나는 기호는 주체와 그것이 지시하는 지시대상과의 거리가 소멸되고 그 소멸된 자리에 다양한 언표들이 환유적으로 자리하고 있다. 이러한 주체와 지시대상과의 거리 소멸은 자유연상에 의해 환기된다. 자유연상에 의한 이미지들은 각각의 의미를 지니는 것이 아니라 무의미하게 스쳐 지나가는 풍경일 뿐이다. 이런 우연적인 결합에 의한 기호들은 본래의 의미를 상실해 버리고 즉물적인 이미지로 존재하게 된다.마지막으로 무의미시에서 나타나는 물질성인 기호들은 사물 자체의 본질을 소멸시킴으로서 변용을 꿈꾸게 된다. 인간과 사물과의 관계, 생물체와 무생물체와의 관계를 초월하여 관념에 의한 의미 영역이나 이미지를 해체하고 파괴한다. 그리고 사물이 가지고 있는 ‘실용성’이나 ‘합리성’을 소멸시켜 버리고 이러한 각각의 사물들은 등치관계를 형성하고 있는 전연 다른 이미지로 발현된다. 이와 같이 김춘수의 무의미시에 나타나는 환유의 형성 방식은 1960년대 한국 모더니즘 시를 이해하는데 중요한 역할을 하게 된다.

Modern poetry has to respond to the unfamiliar surroundings changing rapidly and the experience conditions with a new way. Therefore, we consider the change and the newness as the core values to maintain its identity.The study of metonymic rhetoric in the poetry by Kim Chun-Su is very important to invest the viewpoint on language of Korean modernism poetry.The metonymic rhetoric in ��Cheo-Yong-Dan-Jang��is expressed by the materiality of language symbol and the depaysement, the extinction of the distance between a subject and an object, and the deformation of the world and the self.For the materiality of language symbol, he regards language as a symbol, namely material, and writes poetry only with a rhythm or a descriptive image.There is the disconnection among rhythms and descriptive images, and he infinitely expands the meaning scope by creating various images or meanings through the crash and the dissolution. In the relationship of a subject and an object, the distance between a subject and a referred object becomes extinct and various statements appear metonymically in the extinct place. The extinction of the distance between a subject and an object is ventilated by free-association. The images by free-association do not have each meaning, but they are just the scenery passing meaninglessly.Therefore, the accidental combination of these images has various interpretations and proximity. Lastly, the deformation of the world and the self makes it possible to transcend the relationship of a human and a thing and of things animate and inanimate by dissipating the nature of a thing itself.Transcending the relationship means disintegrating and destroying the boundary differentiated by existing notions or the meaning scope and images made by notions.A metonymy is generated from the process of these disintegration and destruction.On this wise, the metonymic rhetoric in the poetry by Kim Chun-Su creates various levels of meaning scope on the axis of an integration with material symbols, the language.
