AStudy on the Pattern of the Acceptance and Development of Songgukri-type Culture on Jeju Island
This thesis is a study on the pattern of the acceptance and development of Songgukri-type cul-ture on Jeju island. It is presumed that Songgukri-type culture was introduced into Jeju island inthe process of its diffusion from Gumkang river region to Honam region. Based on my research, the inflow of its culture into Jeju is classified as three major stages. In the first phase, which I call “Acceptance stage”, Songgukri A typed dwellings were mainlyconstructed. In the case of artifacts, roll-rimed pottery and black burnished long-neck pot whichare the imported pottery from the mainland have been unearthed together with erect-mouth pot-tery and Samyangdong typed pottery which are indigenous, and flsttenedhand-axe, stonedagger-withhilt, triangle-shaped flat stone arrowhead have been excavated. The first phase has beendated between 4th century and 2nd century BC.In the second phase, which I name “Diffusion stage”, the structure of dwellings were slightlydownscaled. While Songgukri-A typed dwellings were continuously built, Songgukri B and Cwere newly appeared. Erect-mouth pottery became extinct in this phase, and whileSamyangdong type pottery were still made in a small scale, most of pottery form were changedto Oedodong type. Furthermore, new type of pottery such as mounted dish pottery, basin pot-tery, and pottery lid were emerged. Judging from the fact that all stone tools excavated in the sitewere only used to prepare food, it is thought that in this stage ironware was used for othermeans. The second phase has been dated between 1st century BC and 2nd century AD.In the third phase, which I call “Change stage”, Songgukri-type dwellings were partlyremained, but most form of dwellings were turned to Oedodong type. Based on this fact, I thinkthat Songgukri-type culture in this phase were at extinction stage. The previous styles of potterywere mostly disappeared, and they were simplified into Oedodong typed pottery. Mahan typedpotteries were also partly unearthed together. Other stoneware except tools for foodstuff was notdiscovered like the second phase, and the use of ironware was rapidly increased. The thirdphase has been dated between 3rd century and 4th century AD.
