엘리엇은 20세기 최고의 모더니스트라 평가되며 영미시의 황제라는 칭호를 받을 정도로 그의 문학적 위상은 대단했다. 그러나 이러한 위상에도 불구하고 그의 작품을 감상하기란 하나의 도전이 되고 있다. 그 원인 중에 하나는 바로 시간에 대한 난해한 정의 때문이라고 볼 수 있다. 이 연구는 먼저 엘리엇의 네 사중주를 기독교적 시각에서 간략하게 살펴보았다. 즉, 현재를 중심으로 과거와 미래가 연결되어 하나의 고리를 형성한다는 사실을 알 수 있다. 그 시간을 나타내기 위하여 엘리엇은 물리적 시간과 형이상학적 시간의 원리를 동시에 사용한다. 물론 정점을 중심으로 과거와 현재 그리고 미래가 하나의 연결고리를 형성한다는 사실을 알 수 있다. 그리고 또한 엘리엇은『네 사중주』뿐 아니라『황무지』를 비롯하여 ｢J.알프레드 프로프록의 사랑노래｣, ｢게론티온｣ 등에서도 시간의 이동모습을 보여주고 있다. 그러나 특이한 점은 작품 속 화자의 의식의 이동 즉, 현재에서 과거로, 과거에서 미래로 등 다양하게 화자의 시제가 이동하는 모습을 볼 수 있다. 엘리엇은 시간의 이동원리를 구체화하기 위하여 이러한 화자의 의식의 이동원리라는 기제를 사용한다.

Above all, when we look at Eliot’s time, the center is Four Quartets. Many people have studied the work, and more are still studying it. But because of its peculiar difficulty, critics as well as ordinary people can’t easily understand it. Thus, this thesis is to retrace Eliot’s concept of time. According to Eliot’s abstract meaning of time, the present is connected with the past. As a result, the point where three kinds of time are completely integrated into one is the still point. Eliot draws still point very closely and precisely. Also, to convey time more concretely and compactly, he uses speaker’s consciousness and unconsciousness. Eliot reveals the meaning of time by using them more correctly. That is, speaker’s consciousness and unconsciousness are used freely without constraint. So far, many critics have overlooked it.
