서곡 은 워즈워스의 정신적 성장사를 보여주는 작품으로 고백적 성격을 띠 고 있다. 시인은 정신적 위기를 극복하고, 손상된 상상력을 회복하기 위해 과거 의 경험들을 회상하는데, 사실적 기억의 차원을 넘어 현재의 필요에 맞게 재구 성하듯 회상해 낸다. 워즈워스의 서곡 은 서구문학사에서 매우 독특한 위치를 차지하고 있는데, 이 작품에서 눈에 띠는 서술기법은 “시간의 점들”(spots of time)에 대한 회상이다. “시간의 점들”은 서곡 의 전개에서 매우 중요한 의미 를 지닌다. 이 시간의 점들은 어느 한 순간에 신비로운 모습으로 나타나 기억을 지배하며, 무의미하게만 느껴지는 일상의 숱한 기억을 향해 밝은 빛을 비춰 그 것들이 각기 모래알처럼 흩어지지 않고 나름의 유기적 관계를 맺어 전체에 의 미 있는 구성요소가 되도록 도와준다. 워즈워스는 이런 시간의 점들을 과거의 사건이 아닌 현재적 사건으로 해석하고 고백하면서 오랜 세월에 걸쳐 시인으로 서 자신의 서사적 고백시를 완성하였다. 본 소고는 이런 시간의 점들에 대해 문 학적 차원뿐만 아니라 종교, 철학적 차원에서 새로운 조명을 시도하고 있다.

The Prelude which reflects Wordsworth’s trace of mental growth represents a personal-epic character. He retrospects his own special experiences and reconstitutes memories in a poetical manner. In The Prelude, his special such memories and experiences appear as the “spots of time.” The “spots of time” function to be mysterious and control the poet’s memories. They shed light on the memories and give them new meanings. The individual memories, thus, are saved, rather than being scattered and forgotten, that serving as meaningful constitutional elements of life. It can be said that this main functions to be the “spots of time.” Wordsworth interprets the “spots of time” as eternal current events, not just as events in the past. Until now, many attempts done to elicit the meaning of the “spots of time” have been mainly based on literary aspects. This paper, on the other hand, focuses on the religious and philosophical aspects of the “spots of time” as well as the literary aspect.
