본 연구는 초등 예비교사를 대상으로 다문화주의 관점 수용 정도를 파악하고, 다문화 관련 단원을 가르칠 때 쟁점을 다루려는 의향을 조사하였다. 강원, 경기, 충청 지역의 초등 예비교사 286명을 대상으로 설문조사를 실시한 결과, 전반적으로 문화적 다양성을 긍정적으로 받아들이고 있었으며, 모든 집단에게 기회의 평등을 보장해야 한다는데 동의하였다. 그러나 사적, 공적 영역에서 소수 집단의 문화 표출과 소수 집단의 문화 유지를 위한 지원에 대해서는 부정적인 입장을 나타냈다. 다문화 교육 관련 수업을 들었던 집단은 문화적 측면에서 다문화주의 관점 수용 정도가 높았다. 한편, 다문화 관련 단원을 가르칠 때, 다문화 사회에서 나타나는 현상이나 편견·차별과 관련된 문제를 중립적으로 다루겠다는 의향은 상대적으로 높게 나타났으나, 제기될 수 있는 쟁점을 다루겠다는 의향은 낮게 나타났다. 예비교사들은 다문화 사회에서 제기될 수 있는 문제들을 적극적으로 검토하는 과정을 통해 다문화적인 태도를 함양할 필요가 있다. 이를 위해 예비교사가 긍정적이고 개방적으로 다문화주의 관점을 수용하도록 하며, 다문화 관련 쟁점을 다루려는 교사의 역량을 제고할 수 있는 교육과정이 마련되어야 한다.

The purpose of this study is to explore elementary pre-service teahcers' perception of multiculturalism and related issues and its implications on pre-service teacher education program. The sample of this study consists of 286 pre-service elementary school teachers in Gyeonggi, Gangwon, Chungbuk Province. The questionnaire is comprised of questions regarding cultural/institutional aspects of multiculralism, and intention of teaching multicultual issues. The results of this study are as follows. First, elementary pre-service teachers positively accept cultural diversity, and agree on ensuring equal opportunities. Second, they think minority group should not represent their unique culture in private and public domain and oppose supports for maintaining minority culture. Third, their intention of teaching controversial issues related to multicultualism is relatively lower than intention of teaching phenomena of societal change. Elementary pre-service teachers need to develop multicultural attitude, improve their competence required to deal with multicultural issues, and accept multiculturalism. Teacher education programs should offer more courses on exploring diverse multicultural issues.
