남명학파와 관련된 각 가문의 역사에 대한 관심을 가지고 있던 필자는 이번에 남명 조식의 문인인 文益成 및 그의 후손의 활동에 대해 살펴보았다. 합천에 거주하던 문익성은 문과에 급제해 여러 관직을 거쳤다. 그의 아들 문 려도 마찬가지로 문과를 거쳐 중요 관직을 역임하였고, 문할도 진사시에 합격 하였다. 두 형제는 임진왜란이 일어나자 의병활동을 전개하였다. 형제간의 우 애도 돈독하고 부모에 대한 효성도 지극하였다. 이런 행적으로 인해 그들의 가 문은 경상 우도에서 손색없는 사대부 가문으로 자리잡게 된다. 진주로 이거한 문할의 후손들은 이후에도 이런 사족 가문의 전통을 계승하면 서 진주에서 명망가문으로 뿌리내리게 된다. 그들은 선조의 가학을 잇는 입장 에서 남명학파의 맥을 이어갔고, 또 조선 후기의 정치적 변화 속에서 남인 입장 을 견지하였다. 다른 사대부 가문과 마찬가지로, 그들은 멸망한 명나라를 대신해 中華문화를 굳건하게 이어 간다는 입장에서 존주의식을 꾸준히 계승해 가고 있었다. 특히 그들은 그들 가문에 대대로 전해지던 大明花의 보호･전승을 통해 이를 실천해 가고 있었던 것이다.

This writer, being interested in the history of each family concerned with Nammyeong(南冥) school, looked over the achievements that Mun-Ikseong(文益成), a Nammyeong Cho-shik(曺植)'s follower, and his descendents left then. Mun-Ikseong who dwelled in Habcheon(陜川) passed the higher civil examination and filled various government posts. His son Mun-Ryeo (文勵) also passed the higher civil examination and filled important government posts, and the other son Mun-Hal(文劼) passed the minor civil examination. Two brothers raised the loyal armies in Imjinweran(1592 war). Their brotherliness was very profound each other and the sons were devoted to their parents. Because of these activities their family was situated as the family that was by no means inferior to other sajok families in Kyeongsangwudo(慶尙右道). Thereafter Mun-Hal's descendents who settled in Jinju also upheld the traditions of the sajok family and made their family very prestigious. They upheld the strain of Nammyeong school to succeed their forefathers' learning tradition, and kept to Namin in a swirl of the political changes in the late Chosun dynasty. In common with other families, they upheld the Jonju(尊周) sentiment(venerating sentiment for China) to succeed Chinise culture instead of perished Myeong(明) cleverly. In particular, they put it in practice by shielding and handing down the Daemyeonghwa(大明花) which was inherited in their family.
