본 발표에서 이해를 시도하는 澹山 河祐植(1875~1943)은 지금까지 본격적 인 연구가 이루어지지 아니한 새로운 연구 대상이다. 이에 본 연구는 그의 文集 인 󰡔澹山集󰡕을 통한 텍스트 분석에 치중하였다. 󰡔澹山集󰡕은 그가 사망하고 십 여 년의 세월이 흐른 뒤에 간행되었지만, 그 編次는 그가 생전에 손수 확정해 놓은 면모 그대로였음을 추정할 수 있다. 󰡔澹山集󰡕의 내용을 분석해 보면, 담산의 인생에는 다음의 세 가지 특기할 만 한 사항이 눈에 띈다. 첫째, 南冥學을 수용함과 아울러 艮齋 田愚에까지 이어지 던 栗谷學을 함께 계승한 學問淵源을 지니고 있다. 둘째, 일제의 침략에 대하여 적극적으로 항거하는 대신 비협조로 일관하며 조선왕조에 대한 충성을 변치 않 는 ‘靖獻’의 삶의 자세를 견지하고 있다. 셋째, 學問淵源이 닿은 선현들의 문집 간행을 돕고 집안에 전해지던 遺文을 수습하여 간행하는 등 문헌의 정리와 간 행 사업에 전념하여 업적을 남기고 있다. 조선왕조가 망국의 길을 걷는 과정과 일제의 식민통치시기를 몸소 겪어야 했 던 담산은 ‘時義’를 중시하는 出處觀을 지니고 있었으며, 우주의 원리와 心性의 원리 및 양자의 관계성을 통일된 원리로 일관되게 설명하는 心性論에 대한 심 후한 소양을 지니고 있었다. 담산이 일제의 식민통치 하에서 변절하지 않고 끝 까지 절조를 지킬 수 있었던 배경에는 이런 마음공부가 작용하고 있었다고 하 겠다. 수단과 방법을 가리지 않고 잘 살기만 하면 그만이라는 생각에 물질을 최고의 가치로 여긴 채 인물의 도덕성을 부차적 문제로 간주하는 오늘날의 사회에서, 담산의 인생이 우리에게 무엇을 시사해주고 있는가를 진지하게 고민해 보아야 할 것이다.

Damsan Ha Woo-sik(1875~1945) is a new study subject about which any serious researches have not been made. Thereof, this study mostly concerns the analysis of his text on reading 󰡔A Collection of Damsan's Works󰡕. It was not until 10 years after his death that the collection was published; however, it is assumed that it has been preserved without alterations from the origin features that Damsan had established. In the contents of 󰡔A Collection of Damsan's Works󰡕 there are three distinctive features : 1. In his academic background he succeeded to the teachings of Yul-gok which was handed to Ganjae Jun, Woo ,and received the teachings of Nam-myung as well. ; 2. Though he did not actively resist the invasion of Japan, he remained faithful to the Joseon Dynasty refusing to offer any help to Japan, which means that he adhered to his way of life-'silent fidelity(靖獻)'. ; 3. He helped to publish the collections of his academic ancestors and arranged the posthumous writings in his house to publish them. Damsan, who went through the collapse of the Joseon Dynasty and the Japanese Imperialism, cherished the 'righteousness of times(時義)' in his view of the origin, and also had a great knowledge of the theory of mind that coherently explains the principles of the universe, mind, and the relation between them. These kinds of cultivation of mind could enable him to be loyal to the last under the control of Japan. In a mammonish age like today, it is easy to consider one's morality as a secondary value. That is the reason why we should think over what Damsan's life suggests to us.
