본 연구는 The Abingdon Bible Commentary(1929)에 나타난 주요 신학사 상을 고찰하려는 데 목적을 둔다. 이 주석서는 신학적으로나 교회 정치적 으로나 혼란스럽던 시기에 번역되어 1935년에 발행되었으며, 장로교 총회 와 보수적인 기독교인들에게 부정적인 영향을 미쳤다. 單券聖經註釋은 총 다섯 편으로 편성되었는데 제1편에는 “聖經 全體 에 對한 論文”, 제2편에는 “舊約全書에 對한 論文”, 제3편에는 “舊約全書 註釋”, 제4편에는 “新約에 對한 論文”, 제5편에는 “新約全書註釋”이 실려 있다. 개혁주의 신학 관점에서 볼 때 무엇보다도 이 주석서의 주요 난제는 신학적으로 성경 고등비평과 문서설에 입각하여 기술되어 있다는 점이다. 따라서 이 주석서에는 성경의 완전축자영감설을 인정하지 않는다는 논리 가 명백하게 전제되었다. 그럼에도 불구하고 지금까지 單券聖經註釋의 신학적인 문제들을 분석한 학적 작업은 수행되지 않았다. 본 연구에서는 單券聖經註釋을 고찰함에 있어 당시 논란의 핵심이었 던 ‘기적들’과 ‘그리스도론’에 초점을 맞추었다. 첫째, ‘기적들’에 대한 관점에서는 천지창조 사역, 노아의 대홍수, 애굽 십재앙과 홍해도하, 오병이어 기적 등에 대해 고찰했다.둘째, ‘그리스도론’에 대한 관점에서는 그리스도의 선재성, 양자론, 그리 스도의 인성의 무죄성, 그리스도의 동정녀 탄생, 메시야 자의식, 그리스도 의 죽으심(죄의 전가)과 부활, 그리고 그리스도의 재림의 양식 등에 대해 고찰했다.

The aim of this paper is to investigate the main theological thought of The Abingdon Bible Commentary (1929). This Commentary which was translated into Korean and published in 1935 during theological and political confusion, negatively affected the General Assembly of the Korean Presbyterian Church and conservative Christians. The Abingdon Bible Commentary consists of five parts, such as articles on the Bible as a whole(Ⅰ), articles on the Old Testament(Ⅱ), commentary on the Books of the Old Testament(Ⅲ), articles on the New Testament(Ⅳ) and commentary on the Books of the New Testament(Ⅴ). Above all, the main problem with The Abingdon Bible Commentary from the viewpoint of Reformed theology is that it is theologically written from the perspective of biblical higher criticism and the documentary hypothesis. Therefore this Bible commentary is based on a clear premise: the Bible is not the result of plenary verbal inspiration. Nevertheless, the theoretical work on The Abingdon Bible Commentary in relation to its theological problems, has not been done so far. In this study I try to search for the The Abingdon Bible Commentary focusing on ‘Miracles’ and ‘Christology’ which were the highly controversial issuesat that time. First, the viewpoints of ‘Miracles’: the Creation of the universe, Noah’s Flood, the ten plagues in ancient Egypt and the crossing of the Red Sea, the miracles of the loaves and fishes. Second, the viewpoints of ‘Christology’: the preexistence of Christ, Adoptionism, the sinless humanity of Christ, the virgin birth of Christ, the Messiahnic self-consciousness, the death (the imputation of sin) and resurrection of Christ, and the manner of the Second Advent of Christ.
