엘리엇은 이론과 실제, 즉 비평과 시 사이에 일관성이 없는 것으로 많은 비난을 받아왔다. 사실 엘리엇은 시간이 흐름에 따라 특히 개별 작가에 대한 비평적 관점이 변화한 것으로 유명하다. 엘리엇 스스로도 이를 의식하였으며, 이러한 비난에 대한 대안으로 그가 제시한 것은 시 적 기법이다. 엘리엇은 초기부터 시작 행위자의 비평을 줄곧 옹호해왔 듯이 창작행위는 비평에 우선한다고 하였다. 즉 그의 이론을 정당화하 는 것은 바로 시라는 덕이다. 그러나 엘리엇에게서 이론과 실제는 일방 적인 것이 아니라 상호적인 것으로 그의 시 이론과 시 창작행위 사이의 긴밀성을 추적하는 것은 궁극적으로 엘리엇의 몰개성시학을 정당화 하 는 작업이다. 이러한 점에서 시 기법은 엘리엇의 이론과 실제, 형식과 내용을 연결해 주는 수단이며, 동시에 시학이론—즉 시는 그 자체로 자 기 충족적이라는 이론—을 시험하고 정당화하는 수단인 것이다. 셰익스 피어, 단테, 형이상학파 시인, 상징주의자, 이미지스트 등은 모두 이러한 몰개성 기법의 연구자로서 엘리엇에게는 유의미했다.

Eliot has been criticized for the inconsistency between his theory and practice. His frequent shifts in critical positions were prominent over the years, specifically in his evaluations of the individual writers. Eliot himself was conscious of the criticism, and his answer was technique. As he endorsed “the practitioner’s criticism,” he championed creation over criticism: it is poetry only that justifies criticism. However, the relationship between theory and practice is far from being one-sided. Tracing their coherency is the ultimate justifier of Eliot’s impersonal poetics. In this light, technique for Eliot is both the merger of Eliot’s theory and practice and also form and content. More importantly, technique is both the tester and justifier of Eliot’s impersonal theory of poetry, the art of autotelic nature. Shakespeare, Dante, metaphysical poets, Symbolists, Imagists, et al stand as the forerunners of his impersonal techniques.
