강희안의 <고사관수도(高士觀水圖)>는 현재 국립중앙박물관에 소장 되어 있는 작품이다. 이 작품은 조선 초기 안견파(安堅派) 화풍이 풍미하 고 있던 당시와는 달리 색다른 경향의 화풍을 보이고 있다. 이런 화풍을 선도하는 강희안은 이 작품에서 활달하고 세련된 필치(筆致)로 문인사대 부의 기품을 함축적으로 표현하는 새로움을 보였다.
본 연구에서는 <고사관수도(高士觀水圖)>에서 나타나는 수석(壽石) 소재의 관점을 중심으로 고찰하였다. 이 그림은 너무나 유명한 그림으로 전해오기에 후대에 그림 제목, 즉 명칭을 제명(題名)할 당시에 무엇보다 그동안‘물을 바라보는 있는 고사(高士)’라는 해석이 일반적으로 되어있 었던 그 시대 상황과, 이와 비슷한 유형의 동시대 풍속화 등의 제목을 참 고하여 이 그림에 대한 명칭을 제명(題名)한 것으로 판단된다.
본 연구에서는 그동안 불리어져 온 명칭을 수용하면서, 그림에 등장하 는 수석 소재의 인식을 중점으로 새로운 작품 명칭을 제언하고자 한다. 이 그림에서 고사가 바라보는 것은‘물(水)’만이 아니고, 물 위에 드러나 있는‘괴석(怪石)’으로 표현된 수석(壽石)을 바라보고 있다는 것이 본 연 구의 논지이다. 여기에서는 옛 그림 한 점을 놓고 작가는 어떤 사람이었 는지, 그림이 그려 질 당시에 작가의 시대적 상황은 어떠했는지, 또한 작 가가 그림을 통해 무엇을 표현하고자 했는지를 미학적 방법으로 접근한 다. 특히 조선시대 문인사대부들의 애석(愛石) 취미생활 등의 환경적 요 소와, <고사관수도(高士觀水圖)>작품에 나타난 구도상의 조형성 등을 고려하여 본 연구자가 여러 정황을 내놓음으로써 이 작품 명칭을 새롭게 제시하고자 한다.

Gang Heean's <Gosagwansudo(高士觀水圖)>, where one can feel elegant immersion in the picture, is currently displayed in the National Museum of Korea.
This picture contains easy lifestyle of a classical scholar of old times, who watches the water side with both hands supporting one’s chin, leaning against a rock, with a vine and a steep cliff on the background, which was a different trend of painting style during that period, when Angyeonpa painting style, developed based on the influence of the painting during Chinese Northern Song Period, was prevalent, and that received attention as the most important work among the painting works of early Joseon Dynasty. With a small part of landscape as the background, person-centered composition or bold deflection structure mainly with close-range view, etc. were regarded as the pioneering factors of Jeolpagye Sogyeongsansu yinmul painting style, which was popular during mid Joseon Dynasty. However, the title of this painting <Gosagwansudo>, regarding its name, has a few problematic factors. Of course, this picture is considered as a very famous painting, therefore, when naming the title of the painting, the name was given under the general concept based on the state of period when ‘a scholar who is watching the water’ was normal and general meanwhile, referring to the title of genre painting in the similar style of that period.
Nevertheless, the object that the scholar was watching in this picture was “The ‘Rock’, not the water!”, according to the researcher’s point of view. The point to closely investigate a piece of old picture in respect of the artist, the situation of the period when the work was painted, and the implication in the painting can be said to be a natural aesthetic approach. Therefore, this research intended to reconsider the matter of naming of the work, considering the supplement and explanation of the topic which is not displayed in the picture, and the environmental factors such as the hobby of the artist Gang Heean and noblemen, etc. while accepting the possibility that the title of this work was given during the latter period.
