역사적으로 금강산은 크게 霜嶽, 楓嶽, 皆骨, 蓬萊라는 이칭이 있었 다. 상악, 풍악, 개골은 불교가 수용되기 전 우리나라에서 사용되던 금 강산의 고유 명칭이었다. 특히 상악은 국가주도로 행하던 名山大川祭 중 小祀를 지내던 곳으로 三國史記 祭祀條에 실려 있다. 조선시대 사료까지 고증해 본 결과 상악은 가장 처음 ‘국가공명’으로 사용된 명칭 이었다. 삼국시대 이후 사용되지 않다가 조선후기 불교식 이름으로 고 착된 금강이란 명칭에 대한 儒者들의 비판여론 속에서 묻혀 있었던 상악이라는 명칭이 다시금 거론되고 금강산의 원 명칭으로 고증된다. 풍악, 개골은 고려전기까지 꾸준히 사용되다가 고려후기 금강이라는 명칭이 보편화되면서 잘 사용되지 않는다. 조선시대 文士들의 詩文 내 용에 두 명칭이 계속 나타나긴 하나, 금강이라는 명칭에 가려져 산을 대표하는 題名으로는 잘 사용되지 않았다. 이 두 명칭은 가을, 겨울 등 특정 계절에 나타나는 형상에 따라 각각 붙여진 것이 아니다. 돌산으 로 이루어져 있는 지세와 단풍나무가 많이 자라고 있는 모습 등 계절을 불문하고 산 자체에서 풍기는 形勝에 따라 붙여진 이름이었다. 금강은 華嚴經에 曇無竭菩薩이 상주한다는 산을 바탕으로 만들어 진 불교식 이름이다. 불교의 수용이후 14세기 후반 금강산은 불교성지 로 큰 명성을 얻는다. 그러므로 이시기 산의 명칭 또한 금강으로 보편화 되어 사용된다. 조선시대에는 유자들의 거부감을 일으키고 비판의 대 상이 되었지만, 이미 금강이라는 명칭은 대내ᆞ외적으로 확고부동하게 자리 잡고 있어 대부분의 사람들도 금강산이라 칭했다. 현재에도 이러 한 전통이 계승되어 금강이 대표 명칭으로 쓰이고 있다. 봉래는 고려시대까지 이상세계 표현을 위한 것 외에 금강산의 異稱 으로 불린 예가없다. 조선시대부터 문인들이 금강산을 봉래로 빗대어 표현하기 시작했다. 금강이라는 불교식 이름의 대안도, 道敎의 공간으 로 표상화하기 위해 전적으로 사용한 것도 아니었다. 대부분 금강산이 Utopia와 같은 곳임을 은유적으로 표현하기 위한 題材나 배경으로 사 용한 것이었다. 그러므로 금강산을 이칭하는 대표 명사로는 거의 사용 되지 않았다.

Mt. Geumgang was historically referred as Sangak(霜嶽), Bongnae(蓬萊), Pungak(楓嶽), Gaegol(皆骨). According to The Chronicles of the Three States, ancestral rites in the Country were held in Sangak. Sangak was first used in the formal name of the country. After the period of the Three States(三國時代), the name had not been used but Sangak which was forgotten by the criticism of the public of Confucian scholar made a subject of discussion and became the Mt. Geumgang, originally name. Pungak and Gaegol was constantly used in the early Koryo and it was not used in the late Koryo because the name of Geumgang became universal. In the Joseon Dynasty, man of letters used the name of poetry and prose but the noun of representing the mountain was not used because it was hidden by the name of Geumgang. These two names arise from showing four seasons of the topography of a stony mountain and maple. Geumgang was the Buddhism name. After accommodating the Buddhism, Mt. Geumgang attain eminence in Buddihism shrine in the latter part of 14th. Thus the name of mountain was also Geumgang universally . Even though it was the subject of criticism and making repulsion of Confucian scholar, Geumgang was already universally recognized. As a result, the name inherited tradition and it was still used in now. Bongnae was not used in the different name of Mt. Geumgang except in the case of that was used in the expression of Utopia until the Koryo Dynasty. The man of letters start to express to Bongnae of giving a wrong name. It was not representing the space of Taoism and not alternative of buddhism’s name. The reason why calling Bongnae was intended to expression metaphorically.
