「리틀 기딩」의 본류에는 전쟁이라는 큰 사건이 흐르고 있다. 물론 20 세기 전쟁 뿐 아니라 17세기에 발생했던 장미전쟁까지도 엘리엇은 관심 의 대상으로 삼고 있다. 그러나 문제는 그 전쟁을 과거의 단순한 사건 으로 치부해서는 아무런 의미가 없다는 것을 인식하는 것이 무엇보다도 중요하다. 엘리엇의 주장대로 “의미로 재생된 과거의 경험”이 「리틀 기딩」에서 구체화되고 있는 것이다. 과거에 대한 재해석을 위해서는 현재 를 판단의 중심 시제로 삼고 과거의 사건에 대해 알맞은 의미를 부가하 는 것이 중요하다고 볼 수 있다. 즉, 과거의 사건을 그대로 과거로 남겨 두어서는 의미가 없으며 그것을 재석할 필요가 있다는 것이다. 이 논리 를 엘리엇은「리틀 기딩」에서 그대로 보여주고 있다.

The primary background of “Little Gidding” is a war. Writing this poem, Eliot paid attention to the situations of the times and its place in sequence of the previous Quartets, “Burnt Norton,” “East Coker,” and “The Dry Salvages.” This paper aims to study Eliot’s inner intentions as well as the cause and effect of the war through “Little Gidding.” The key point in this poem is to rethink about the past. The past does not end but it affects the present. We should realize that the past can be modified by the present. So Eliot demands that we should look at the history or the past without attachment nor indifference. If the past remains only the past, it has no meaning at all. By adding a new meaning to the past, still centering on the present, we can rethink about the past and regain its real meaning. Eliot, through “Little Gidding” puts greater emphasis on the meaning of the history or the event than the place itself called “Little Gidding.”
