T. S. 엘리엇 시의 텍스트를 이루는 구절들은 여러 겹의 다른 목소리들로 중첩되어 그 두께가 두껍다. 『재의 수요일』도 예외는 아니다. 그 목소리들은 단테, 셰익스피어, 종교의 경전 등 역사적 맥락에서뿐만 아 니라 그의 내면에서 온 메시지들이다. 텍스트의 화자이면서 청자인 엘리엇은 40일간의 사순절 첫날인 재의 수요일에 이 목소리들과 함께 내면여행을 시작한다. 돌이킴, 성녀와의 만남과 육의 죽음, 어둠 속 그림자와의 대면, 장미정원에서 성녀와 합일, 말씀과의 합일, 새로운 차원의 돌이킴 등 여섯 단계의 내면 여행은 결국 하느님과의 합일을 통한 성스러움을 이루는 성화과정이다. 이 여행은 또한 분석심리학의 관점에서 볼 때 개성화과정이기도 하다. 개성화과정은 의식과 무의식이 통합해가는 과정이다. 의식세계의 자아는 무의식에서 보내온 꿈이나 적극적 상상을 통해 무의식세계의 원형들, 즉 그림자, 아니마/아니무스 등과 대면 하고 화해하여 최종적으로 정신의 총합이자 중심인 자기원형과 합일하는 것이다. 엘리엇의 성화과정을 개성화과정과 병치하여 읽어 보면, 그가 왜 시대의 흐름을 거슬러 앵글로 가톨릭교로 개종했는지 이해할 수 있다. 그 핵심적 이유는 그의 영적 내면여행의 안내자인 아니마, 즉 성녀의 존재 때문이라 할 수 있다.

The phrases of T. S. Eliot’s poetry are thick with the overlapping layers of various voices from the different ages. Ash-Wednesday is no exception. The voices are not only from the historical contexts such as Dante, Shakespeare, mythical and religious texts, but they are also messages from his inner world. Eliot, a narrator as well as a listener in his Ash-Wednesday text, sets out on the spiritual journey toward his inner world by writing his text. This spiritual journey comprises three stages: turning toward his inner world, encountering the Lady and facing his shadow in the darkness, and finally accepting Word with words. From the Christian view, this spiritual journey is called the sanctification process which is a process of a Christian’s being made holy with the Holy Spirit. Speaking from the perspective of the analytical psychology, the journey is comparable to the individuation process. It is the process of union between consciousness and the unconscious. The ego of consciousness is turning to the inner world of the unconscious and facing, recognizing, and reconciling various archetypes including shadow, anima/animus. The final stage of the individuation process is to have union with Self which is both the center and the whole of consciousness and the unconscious. Juxtaposing Eliot’s sanctification process with individuation process reveals the psychological answer to the question why Eliot converted to Anglo-Catholic.
