T. S. 엘리엇의 네 사중주는 4 편의 시들로 구성돼 있으며, 각 시의 제목은 특정한 장소의 이름이다－｢번트 노튼｣(“Burnt Norton”), ｢이스트 코우커｣(“East Coker”), ｢드라이 샐베이지즈｣(“The Dry Salvages”) 그리고 ｢리틀 기딩｣(“Little Gidding”). 본고는 네 개 제목들의 첫 글자들을 순서대로 결합하면 ‘B-E-TH-L’ 또는 ‘B-E-THE-L’이라는 단어가 만들어지고, 이는 ‘Bethlehem’ or ‘Bethel’ 이라는 낱말을 이루게 된다는 가설을 제안 한다. 히브리어로 ‘beth’는 ‘집’을 뜻하므로 ‘Bethlehem’은 ‘빵의 집’을, ‘Bethel’은 ‘하나님의 집’을 의미한다. 본고는 엘리엇의 집필과정을 상세히 탐구함으로써 이 가정을 뒷받침해줄 근거를 찾아간다. 본고는 이와 같은 시인의 은밀히 감춰진 의도에 대한 가능성을 조심스럽게 받아들임으로써 『네 사중주』를 신이 인간이 된 역사적인 사건, 즉 성육화가 일어났던 독특한 지상의 공간인 한 특별한 ‘집,’ 즉 베들레헴을 향해가는 여정으로 이해하는 시도를 한다. 특히 메를로-퐁티와 같은 현대 현상학자들에 의해 전개된 공간에 대한 이론을 원용하여, 이 작품을 현상학적인 관점에서 공간적 경험으로서 분석한다. 『네 사중주』의 순례자에게 공간은 실존적이며 존재는 공간적이다. 베들레헴은 구원에 대한 희망을 위해 기억될 수 있도록 인류에게 허락된 유일한 장소이다.

T. S. Eliot’s Four Quartets consists of four poems, each title of which is named after a specific place: “Burnt Norton,” “East Coker,” “The Dry Salvages,” and “Little Gidding.” This paper suggests a hypothesis that when the initials of the four titles are assembled in order, they make up a word, ‘B-E-TH-L,’ or ‘B-E-THE-L,’ which turns out to be part of ‘Bethlehem’ or ‘Bethel.’ In Hebrew, ‘beth’ signifies ‘House,’ and so ‘Bethlehem’ means ‘House of Bread,’ and ‘Bethel’ means “House of God.” This article seeks to find further evidence supporting this assumption by investigating closely the process of Eliot’s composition. By cautiously accepting the possibility of the poet’s covert deliberation on this, this paper attempts to understand Four Quartets as journey towards Bethlehem, a special ‘House’ which is the unique earthly space where the historical event of God’s becoming man, the Incarnation happened. Particularly drawing on the theories of space articulated by recent phenomenological philosophers such as Maurice Merleau-Ponty, this paper analyzes this poem as spatial experience from a phenomenological perspective. For the pilgrim of Four Quartets, space is existential and existence is spatial. Bethlehem and the four earthly places are such an existential home that they revive religious and racial memories in the poet’s mind. Bethlehem is the only place bestowed upon humankind to be remembered for their hope for redemption. Recollection of God’s dwelling in Bethlehem opens up the new possibility that this world can be offered again as earthly inhabitation for human-divine encounter.
