기독교에서 평신도란 사제나 목사가 아닌 사람을 말한다. 천주교에서 는 교황, 주교, 사제, 부제로 이어지는 성직계급과 평신도로 구분되어있으며, 개신교에서는 목사, 전도사와 평신도로 구분된 상태를 유지되고 있다. 천주교는 제2차 바티칸 공의회 이후 평신도에 대한 시각이 달라져 평신도가 성직자의 하위에 있는 것이 아니라는 입장이다. 현대 개신교 에서도 교회에서 평신도의 역할이 중요함을 강조하는 입장에 있다. 그러나 이처럼 달라진 시각에도 불구하고 아직 한국의 기독교 사회에서 성직자와 평신도의 관계는 적어도 교회 안에서는 평등한 위치에 있지는 않다. 본 논문에서 거론할 평신도 운동은 성직자가 주축이 된 운동이 아니라 평신도가 주축이 된 운동을 말하려고 한다. 평신도 운동의 기존 연구 성과들을 살펴보면 평신도 운동의 역사적 전개나 현재의 활동에 초점을 맞춘 연구보다는 천주교와 개신교 모두 평신도의 역할의 중요성에 대한 연구와 그것에 맞추어 어떻게 평신도를 교육시키고 활용할 것인가에 초점이 맞추어져 있다. 이러한 경향은 일 반 연구논문은 물론이고 학위논문에서도 거의 예외가 아니었다. 이 글은 평신도 운동들 가운데 주요한 것들을 중심으로 소개하고 평신도 운동에서의 특징과 그 전망을 고찰해보는 방향으로 전개할 것이다. 결국 이 글은 앞으로 관련 연구를 위한, 그리고 평신도 운동과 사회변동과의 관계를 파악하기 위한 기본적인 성격을 지닌다고 할 수 있다. 기독교에서 인식하는 평신도 운동의 목적은 천주교나 개신교 모두 선교의 중요성이다. 종교로서 선교가 중요한 것은 사실이나, 가장 시급한 것은 내적 개혁이라고 본다. 이러한 입장을 외면한다면 교라는 이름으로 진행되는 운동이 빛을 잃게 될 것이다. 그러므로 평신도 운동의 본 질은 자기반성 운동이고 기독교 본연의 모습을 찾아보는 운동이다.

In Christianity, laity are people who are not priests or pastors. In the Catholic Church, the hierarchy is divided into the Pope, bishop, priest and laity, and in the Protestant Church, it remains divided into ministers, preachers and lay believers. The Catholic Church believes that laymen are not in the lower of the clergy because their viewpoints on laity have been changed since the second Vatican Council. It is also in the position of emphasizing the importance of the role of laymen in the church of modern Protestantism. Despite this changed view, however, clergy and laymen in Korean Christian society is not yet on an equivalent position, at least within the church. In this paper I will take this view and look at the laity movement of modern and contemporary Korean Christianity. The laity movement being mentioned in this paper is not the movement to be led by the clergy, but the movement to be led by the laymen. However, even if there is a clergy involved in the movement, I will try to see it as a layman movement, as long as it is carried out on an equivalent position without distinction between the clergy and the layman. Looking at the existing research achievements of the laity movement, rather than focusing on the historical development or current activities of it, the focus is on the study of the importance of the role of laymen in both Catholicism and Protestantism, and on the study of how to educate and utilize laymen. Therefore, this study is difficult to escape from listing the basic data of the laity movements and needs to be further supplemented by other research. This article will focus on the major aspects of the laity movement and examine its features and prospects. In the end, this article has a basic character for future research and for understanding the relationship between the laity movement and social change. The essence of the laity movement is to discover the identity of Christianity and restore its essence. The laity movement is actually a self-reflection movement and a movement to find out what the Christianity is all about.
