The Effects of Parenting Attitudes Perceived by the Youth from LowIncome Family on Their School Adjustment : Focusing on Mediating Effects of Ego Resilience
This study examined the effects of parenting attitudes perceived by young people from low-income families on their school adjustment and the mediating effect of ego resilience. For this purpose, 308 out of 2,080 middle school students who had responded to the 4th year survey of the Korean Children and Youth Panel were chosen, based on the national sampling. These 308 were from households with low income (less than 24 million won a year). The analytical methods were descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, multiple regression analysis and mediated impact analysis. The results are as follows. First, the average of the positive parenting attitude was higher than those of other parenting attitudes. Second, there was a significant correlation between the students’ school adjustment and parenting attitudes and between negligence and abuse and fraudulent parenting. Third, positive parenting attitude had a significant effect on the students’ school life adjustment and it also had a partial mediating effect through ego resilience. In addition, ego resilience was found to have a significant effect on the students’ school life adjustment. Based on these results, this study suggests that there should be self-resilience reinforcement program and family intervention social welfare program and policy for the youth from low-income households for their school life adjustment.
