<엑스 마키나>는 인공지능 기반 디지털 기술혁명 시대에 인간을 뛰어넘는 인조인간의 창조에 관한 내용을 담고 있는 작품이다. 과학 문명의 급속한 발전으로 ‘숨은 신’의 흔적이 지워진 세상에서 인간이 창조자가 되는 것이다. 피조물인 인조인간은 자의식을 가지고 있을 뿐만 아니라 인간과 감정을 교감할 수 있는 능력을 지닌다. 동시에 인조인간은 인간의 유한성을 나타내는 죽음을 극복 할 수 있는 불멸을 추구한다. 유발 하라리는 인조인간이 중심이 되는 미래사회를 호모 데우스의 시대로 정의한다. 영화 속의 CEO이자 창조자 네이던 베이트 맨은 인조인간이 중심의 미래사회를 운명으로 받아들이지만, 내적으로는 인류의 종말이라는 현실에 절망하며 종국엔 자신의 피조물인 에이바와 교코에 의해 살해당한다. 검색엔진 회사 ‘블루북’의 사원 케일럽 스미스는 인조인간 에이바를 사랑하지만 역시 배신당한다. 네이던과 케일럽은 신이 부재한 인공지능 기반 과학기술문명 사회에서 인공지능이 주도하는 인간사회의 문제점을 보여준다. 호모 데우스의 시대에 인류는 지워버린 ‘숨은 신’을 다시 소환하여 ‘신의 현존 앞에서’ 영생, 불멸, 신성의 문제를 다시 한번 숙고해야 할 것이다.

Ex Machina portrays a revolutionary change of human society in the era of AI-led Digital Technology Transformation. Cyborgs with the ability of self-awareness are expected to excel human beings in various aspects of human capability. As a result, Yuval Harari predicts the time of Homo Deus which mankind can not resist. Nathan Bateman, CEO of BlueBook, creates Ava and invites Caleb Smith, an employee, to his secluded house for the Turing Test of Ava. No matter how big Nathan’s aspiration for the creation of Singularity AI is, he feels an unreal state of mind and eventually is killed by his creatures, Ava and Kyoko. Also, Caleb fails to accomplish his fantasy for having the true relationship with Ava. Both Nathan and Caleb represent modern humans deprived of God’s presence and spirituality. The movie deals with such themes as Deus Absconditus, Homo Deus and Coram Deo.
