『네 사중주』 창작의 기본 바탕에는 엘리엇의 과거 체험이 자리 잡고 있다. 즉, ‘번트 노턴’에서 ‘리틀 기딩’에 이르기까지 엘리엇이 직접 방문한 과거의 체험을 바탕으로하고 있다. 이 글은 그 과거의 체험이 어떤 의미를 갖게 되며 그것의 의의는 무엇인가에 대한 해답 찾기를 시도하고자 한다. 엘리엇은 과거를 그 자체로 남겨두어서는 의미 찾기가 불가능하며 그것을 현재의 시각으로 재해석 내지는 재수정을 요구하고 있다. 이른바 과거의 올바른 의미 찾기라고 볼 수 있다. 아울러 과거를 올 바로 직시하기 위해서는 집착과 무관심을 지양하고 초탈의 자세가 필요하며 또한 과거와 미래를 균등한 자세로 주시할 것을 엘리엇은 주장한다. 이것이 곧 과거의 의미를 정확하게 찾아낼 수 있는 지름길이 되는 것이다.

Four Quartets is based on Eliot’s past experience but he tries to change the past into an object taking on new meanings. The past in Four Quartets includes both Eliot’s personal experiences and the history of the societies he belongs to. And so it is very important to re-seek for the meaning of the past. In this attempt Eliot demands that we should reevaluate the past. If we don’t re-establish the meaning of the past, its meaning will be lost with time gone-by. In this process, we need to adjust or recalibrate the angles in accessing the past. The past itself as the accumulation of factual happenings may not be changed. However, we can find new meanings in the past or our changed circumstances may endow it with different meanings, which is Eliot’s main approach to the past. In doing this, we should keep a detached mindset when dealing with persons and other objects. Eliot shows this attitude demonstrably through Four Quartets.
