이 논문은 비디오아티스트 백남준의 예술세계에서 제안된 ‘전자선[電磁禪, Electronic Zen]’이 그의 1960년대 초기 작업과 관련하여 어떤 의미맥락 하에서 도출되었는지 그 배경을 밝히고 명상으로서의 가능성 단초를 살펴보고자 한다. 20세기 초 양자역학과 인 지과학이 19세기의 전자기학의 유산을 물려받아 뇌의 공감각을 미세한 전류의 커뮤니케 이션으로 재설정되는 것이 백남준이 기획한 ‘전자선’이라고 봤는데, 즉 이 공감각은 13대의 TV 세트가 가진 미세한 차이의 발견으로부터 이어졌다는 것이 이 논문의 주 장이다. 1960년대부터 전자 미디어의 메카닉 형태, 즉 TV의 보급과 함께 ‘미디엄 [medium]’ 개념은 오늘날 우리가 알고 있는 라디오, 텔레비전, 인터넷 등등의 물질적 매체 중심으로 인식되었지만, 그 이전에는 ‘중간’ ‘매개’ ‘영매’와 같은 무형적인 매개 작용에 주목해왔는데, 백남준의 ‘전자선’은 아이러니하게도 이러한 후자의 본래 적 미디엄의 의미를 추구해왔음을 그의 초기 에세이와 단편에서 확인하고자 한다. 사르 트르, 불확정성의 원리, 중세신학, 하이데거, 황홀, 신비주의 등등의 의미맥락 속에서 그 가 비매개적 방식으로 커뮤니케이션 하는 예술을 실행하고자 했고, 그것이 오늘날 우리 가 환경화되어 있는 현재의 미디어 조건 속에서 어떤 명상의 형태를 착안할 수 있는지 그 가능성을 엿보고자 한다.

This paper is intended to explore the new terminology Electronic Zen[電磁禪] oriented from the video art by Nam June Paik in 1960s, flowed around the unique thought background and the process. Art historians often have told Nam June Paik and his art depend on the Zen Buddhism without the more research about the Quantum Theory and Cognitive science. Through Nam June Paik’s Video Art we will the connection between the Electro-magnetic Dynamics in 19th century and the Quantum Theory, and then understand the new meditation suitable type of the Electronic Era since the 1960s. Nam June Paik said the the subtle difference oriented from the 13 sets of Television(in the first personal exhibition <Exposition of Music Electronic Television>) promote the synthesia of the human brain, and then to the trance as a meditation. This basic idea of potiential cognitive operation have been prevailing around the visionary of religion since the beginning. Nam June Paik made a important progress adapted the radically cognitive and electronic environment, paralleled with the mysticism, the theology of the middle ages and the Eastern thoughts. At the intellectual field of the meaningful references, for example, Sartre, The principle of the Uncertainty, mysticism, Heidegger, the trance, Nam June Paik proposed the im-mediate media-experience communicate with the other, and the Electronic Zen understood around the recent condition of complicated media galaxy.
