This article aims to discuss how Jung’s analytical psychology can provide a relevant religious language within the context of Christianity. Both Freud and Jung have contributed to analytical psychology in a very significant way. Although it was Freud who first referred to the two layers in our psychic reality: conscious and unconscious, Jung suggested the notion of the two layers along with his two key ideas, archetype and individuation. Jung’s psychology is fundamentally related to religion in a sense that the process of individuation is a religious one. Jung regards religious experience as one of the essential parts in the development of human psychic reality. He also gives a controversial account of God through the archetype of the shadow. Yet, this controversial aspect can be discussed from the perspective of religious experience and Jung’s positive attitude towards religion. Accordingly, after investigating 1) the key notions, archetype and individuation; 2) the relationship between the Self and God, it will be shown how Jung’s idea of religion could be understood in a relevant way over against Christianity.

본 논문은 칼 융의 분석심리학이 전통적 그리스도교 문맥 안에서 어떻게 타 당한 종교적 언어를 제공해 줄 수 있는지에 대한 가능성을 연구하고자 한다. 프 로이트와 융은 모두 분석심리학의 발전에 매우 중요한 공헌을 하였다. 인간 심 리 현상에서 의식과 무의식이라는 두 개의 층이 존재한다는 이론을 처음 주장 한 학자는 프로이트였다. 그러나 융은 좀 더 발전시켜서, 그 두 개의 층을 자신 의 핵심 개념인 원형과 개성화와 더불어서 연구하였다. 융의 분석심리학은 근본 적으로 종교와 밀접하게 관련되어 있다. 왜냐하면 개성화의 과정은 바로 종교적 체험의 과정이기 때문이다. 융은 프로이트와는 달리 종교적 체험을 인간의 심리 현상의 발달 과정에서 핵심적인 한 부분으로 간주하였다. 그는 또한 그림자 원 형의 개념을 설명하면서 신에 대한 논쟁적인 개념을 주장하기도 하였다. 그러나 그러한 논쟁적인 측면은 융의 종교적 체험에 대한 이해와 종교에 대한 긍정적 인 태도 안에서 충분히 설명될 수 있는 부분이다. 따라서 본 논문은 먼저 융의 핵심 개념인 원형과 개성화에 대해서 설명과 자기와 신의 관계성을 논의한다. 그리고 융의 종교에 대한 이해가 어떻게 그리스도교 안에서 타당한 언어로 이 해될 수 있는지 논의한다.
