영화음악은 영화 속 장면들과 연계해 영화 감상의 몰입과 이해를 돕는다. 같은 화성구조의 반복 과 변화, 삽입곡의 활용, 모티브의 발전 등 영화 속 영화음악이 가지는 기법은 다양하며, 한 작품 속에서 이 모든 기법들이 등장할 수도 있다. 본 연구는 영화음악 작곡가 알렉상드르 데스플라 (Alexandre Desplat, 1961~)의 작품들 중 영화 『프렌치 디스패치』(2021)에 나오는 그의 음악에 주목하였다. 액자식으로 구성된 본 작품은 각 섹션마다 독립적인 이야기들로 구성되어 있다. 이를 표현하기 위해 데스플라는 각 섹션마다 서로 다른 독립적 테마를 사용한 곡을 썼을 뿐 아니라, 이를 발전시키는 방법 또한 다르게 하였다. 어떤 섹션에서는 서로 비슷한 분위기의 소품들을 병렬 하고, 또 다른 섹션에서는 삽입곡으로만 장면을 구성한 한편, 어떤 섹션에서는 모티브의 발전을 위주로 전개를 하였다. 이에 본 연구에서는 각 섹션의 주요한 특징에 기반해 악곡들을 분석하여 영화에서 섹션마다 음악들이 어떻게 다른 방식으로 전개하는지 고찰하였고, 데스플라가 한 영화 속 다른 부분마다 어떻게 다른 작곡 방법을 취하였는지에 대한 결론을 도출하였다.

Film music helps you immerse and understand the movie by linking it with the scenes in the movie. There are various techniques of film music in the movie, such as repetition and change of the same harmony structure, use of embedded songs, and development of motifs, and all of these techniques may appear in one work. Among the works of film music composer Alexandre Desplat (1961~), this study focused on his music from the film 『The French Dispatch』 (2021). The framed work is composed of independent stories in each section. To express this, Desplat not only wrote songs with different independent themes for each section, but also changed the method of developing them. In some sections, props with similar atmospheres were parallelized, in others, the scene was composed only of inserted songs, while in others, the development of motifs was focused on. Accordingly, this study analyzed the musical pieces based on the main characteristics of each section to examine how the music develops in different ways in each section of the film, and concluded how Desplat used different composition methods for different parts of the film.
