이 글의 목적은, 서구 근대문명·문화에 대한 중국 개항도시들의 대응 차이를 도시 의 내재적 요인에 대한 분석을 통해 밝히는 데 있다. 특히 이 글은 개항도시 대응에 차이를 불러온 내재적 요인으로 각 개항도시와 영향관계에 있었던 타 도시(지역)와 의 관계에 주목했다. 구체적인 개항도시로는 톈진과 상하이를 사례로 삼았다. 톈진의 도시문화는, 서구 근대문명뿐만 아니라 베이징과의 상호의존 관계라는 전통적인 구 조가 중층적으로 작동하면서 생성되었다. 이 중층적 요소 중 수도 베이징과의 상호 의존적 관계라는 전통적인 요소로 인해, 톈진은 상하이에 비해 서구 근대에 대해 덜 개방적이고 전통지향적인 성향을 보이게 되었다. 반면 서구 근대 문명·문화에 대한 상하이의 태도는 톈진의 그것에 비해 훨씬 더 개방적이고 적극적이었다. 그 이유는 상하이 도시문화의 저변에 전통적인 강남문화가 놓여 있었다는 데 있다. 경제의 성 장과 상업의 발달을 중시하는 강남의 인재와 문화가 상하이에 오롯이 유입·저장되었 던 것이다. 서구 근대문명·문화가 근대도시 상하이 발전의 표면적 요인이라면, 상하 이에 유입된 강남지역의 전통적인 문화·관념은 근대도시 상하이 발전의 배경이었다.

The purpose of this paper is to elucidate the differences in responses among Chinese port cities to Western modern civilization and culture by analyzing the cities’ intrinsic factors. Specifically, the paper focuses on the relationships these port cities had with other cities (regions) that influenced their respective responses. Tianjin and Shanghai are examined as concrete case studies of these port cities. The urban culture of Tianjin emerged not only through interactions with Western modern civilization but also through a multi-layered structure of traditional ties, notably its interdependent relationship with the capital, Beijing. This traditional factor of interdependence with Beijing led Tianjin to be less open to Western modernity and more oriented towards tradition compared to Shanghai. In contrast, Shanghai’s attitude toward Western modern civilization and culture was far more open and proactive compared to Tianjin. This openness can be attributed to the influence of traditional Jiangnan culture underlying Shanghai’s urban culture. The influx and preservation of Jiangnan’s people and culture, which valued economic growth and commercial development, were integral to Shanghai. While Western modern civilization and culture were the superficial drivers of Shanghai’s development as a modern city, the traditional culture and ideas from the Jiangnan region provided the foundational backdrop for its progress.
