이병주의 􋺷바람과 구름과 비碑􋺸는 명과 운에 상호작용하며 살아가는 인간 삶에 관한 서사이다. 이 소설은 국운이 종말을 향해가는 조선 말기를 시대적 배 경으로 한다. 점복 문화사상을 바탕으로 난세를 헤쳐 나가고자 노력하는 사람들 의 이야기를 담아낸다. 주인공 최천중은 점술사이자 관상사로서 자신의 명을 알 고 운을 개척해 나가는 인물이다. 그는 왕재의 사주팔자를 구상하여, 왕씨 부인 으로부터 아들을 얻어 신왕국의 군주로 준비시킨다. 바람과 구름을 일으며 용을 비상하게 하여 자신도 승룡비천 하겠다는 혁명의 상상력을 발휘한다. 그러나 서 로 다른 혁명 단체와 연합이 성사되지 않고, 외세의 간섭이 심화하는 이유로 혁 명의 성공 가능성은 사라지게 된다. 최천중은 동학혁명이 관군과 일본군에 의해 무참하게 진압된 후, 자신이 동학에 대하여 잘 몰랐으며 그 운동에 참여하지 못 하였음에 대하여 후회한다. 결국, 혁명에 대한 야망은 신왕국의 건국이라는 목 표를 접고 구국, 마음을 지배하는 나라, 영세중립국가, 재물을 지배하는 나라 등 의 순차적 목표로 상상력을 펼쳐 나간다. 􋺷바람과 구름과 비碑􋺸는 바람과 구름 을 일으켜 하늘로 비상하는 용의 은유를 혁명적 상상력으로 그려내는 기념비적 기록이다.

Lee Byung-joo’s Wind, Clouds and Tombstone portrays the narrative of human life with fate and destiny. The story-line of the historical novel centers on Choi Cheon-jung as a fortune-teller and a physiognomist who recognizes his own cunning mind and decides to be a kingmaker of a new kingdom. The protagonist wants to get his own son with the destiny of a king through a prestigious woman when Joseon Dynasty begins to be collapsed by incompetence and corruption. He wants to make his son as the king of a newly found nation, and this revolution is symbolically illustrated as a dragon ascending to the sky by the help of wind and clouds. However, Choi Cheon-jung abandons to act out the revolution due to the failure of coalition between revolutionary groups and the power of foreign countries. The novel is the memorable record of the protagonist’s revolutionary imagination as well as the awareness for his fate and destiny reflecting fortune-telling culture of those times.
