본 논문에서는 로버트 해리스의 􋺷콘클라베􋺸에서 가톨릭교회를 섬기는 불완 전한 인간의 고통 그리고 구원 문제를 살펴보고자 한다. 􋺷콘클라베􋺸는 교황이 서거하면서 추기경 단장인 야코포 로멜리를 중심으로 새로운 교황을 선출하는 과정을 중점적으로 다룬다. 쟁쟁한 후보를 물리치고 예상과 달리, 전혀 의도하 지 않고 또 마지막으로 참석한 의중 결정의 바그다드의 추기경 빈센트 베니테 즈가 새로운 교황으로 선출된다. 로멜리는 베니테즈가 인터섹스라는 사실을 발 견하고 충격에 사로잡히지만, 자신을 하느님의 작품이라고 믿는 베니테즈의 믿 음과 신앙에 굴복한다. 이러한 선거 과정을 고찰하면서 로멜리가 성직자로서 동 시에 불완전한 인간으로서 내적 고민과 갈등을 겪고 진정한 종교인으로 거듭나 는 모습을 살펴보려 한다.

This paper examines the sufferings of incomplete human beings who follow God and the Catholic Church and their redemption in Robert Harris’s Conclave. The novel Conclave is focused on the papal election organized by Cardinal Lomeli as Dean of the College of Cardinals. Unexpectedly, defeating the main candidates, Cardinal Benitez, the Archbishop of Baghdad, who was appointed in pectore by the late pope, is elected as the new pope. Later, Lomeli is shocked by the secret that Benitez has an intersexual organism. However, he embraces it because Benitez shows much stronger faith by confessing he is what God made him. This paper suggests that Lomeli recovers his faith after going through his doubts about Catholicism and the Church as an incomplete being as well as a believer.
