Apple and pear are popular fruits consumed in Korea and are common fruit in daily diet. In order to compare the antioxidant activity of the apple and pear peels, total polyphenol contents, total flavonoid contents, ABTS+ free radical scavenging activity, and DPPH free radical scavenging activity were measured from hot water, ethanol, and methanol extracts of the two fruit peels. The total polyphenol and flavonoid contents were highest in 95% methanol extracts of the apple peelsand 70% ethanol extract of the pear peels, respectively. Total polyphenol contents of the pear peels were higher than that of apple peels, and total flavonoid contents of the apple peels were higher than that of pear peels. The apple and pear peels had the highest ABTS+· and DPPH free radical scavenging activity in 95% methanol extracts and 70% ethanol extracts, respectively. ABTS+· and DPPH free radical scavenging activity of pear peels was higher than that of apple peels, and the DPPH free radical scavenging activity of apple and pear peels were detected in hot water, 95% methanol, and 70% ethanol extracts, respectively. Ascorbic acid, a synthetic antioxidant used as positive control, had significantly higher scavenging activity than the apple and pear peels. In conclusion, the apple and pear peelshave great potential as natural antioxidants. Therefore, above results should be considered to provide the possibility for the development of high functional antioxidants.

사용후핵연료 최종처분을 위해 심층처분은 세계적으로 가장 선호되는 방법이다. 이를 위해 선진국들은 자국 여건에 가장 잘 부합되는 고유의 처분시스템 개발에 주력하고 있거나, 일부 확보하여 상용처분사업에 적용하 고 있다. 현재까지 알려진 대부분의 심층처분시스템은 공학적 및 천연방벽으로 구성된 다중방벽시스템이다. 이들 처분시스템은 수 천 년 ~ 수 십만 년 이상의 성능기간이 대하여 성능·안전성의 입증이 확인되어야 후속 상용처분사업에 적용 가능하다. 입증 현안과제들은 처분시스템의 상능·안전성 확보를 위해 수행되는 모든 행 위 즉, 조사, 분석, 해석, 평가, 설계, 건설, 운영 및 폐쇄에 이르는 전 과정에 있어서 추진 과정과 결과에 대한 실현 가능성과 실증에 필요한 내용들이 해당된다. 이를 위해 대부분의 선진국들은 자국내 분포하는 대표적인 선호암종 지역에서 지하연구시설(URL)을 건설하여 실증·시연프로그램을 수행하거나 완성단계에 있다. 이 과 정과 결과들은 후속되는 최종처분장 부지선정 과정에 평가기준으로 활용될 것이며, 최종처분시설의 성능·안 전성평가에 필수적으로 적용하게 된다. 지하연구시설은 또한 규제-일반대중-전문가 등 다양한 이해당사자들 로 하여금 심층처분의 안전성 수준에 대한 이해제고와 토론의 마당으로서 핵심적인 역할과 기능을 할 것으로 기대된다.

Culturally responsive leadership, derived from the concept of culturally responsive pedagogy, incorporates those leadership philosophies, practices, and policies that create inclusive schooling environments for students and families from ethnically and culturally diverse backgrounds. In this essay I extend the tenets of culturally responsive leadership beyond the school site to encompass community-based educational leadership that advocates for cultural recognition, revitalization, and community development. I provide historical examples of educational leaders from three global cities --New York City, London, and Toronto--and discuss how their actions as public intellectuals, “boundary spanners,” and advocacy leaders linked community activism with culture-based curriculum in three national contexts. In the end, I discuss the implications of this framework for leadership preparation.

The use of agricultural by-products as alternative nutrient sources in crop production had gained popularity in order to reducing the rate of chemical fertilizer application in the field. This study was conducted to determine whether the application of rice milling by-products treated with yeast inoculants could substitute, or reduce the rate of chemical fertilizer application. The results of agronomic measurements showed that the effect of incorporated materials was not immediate, as compared to 100% chemical fertilizer application. However, grain yield and quality was either the same or greater than 100% chemical fertilizer application. It was found out that expanded rice hull (treated with yeast or not) could reduce the rate of applying chemical fertilizers by half. Also, yeast treatment was only favorable only to expanded rice hull and not with rice bran, and was already found to be a potential material in reducing chemical fertilizer application in rice production.

미즈나미 지하처분연구시설 프로젝트는 일본원자력연구개발기구가 결정질암 내의 심부 지하 환경에 관해 종 합적으로 연구하는 프로젝트이다. 미즈나미 프로젝트는 3개의 중첩되는 단계로 구성된다: 지표기반 조사단계 (단계 1), 건설단계 (단계 2), 운영단계 (단계 3)의 총 20년. 미즈나미 프로젝트의 1단계에서 3단계까지의 전체 목표는 1) 심부지질환경을 조사, 분석, 평가하기 위한 기술 정립, 2) 심부 지하 활용을 위한 일련의 공학적 기 술 개발이다. 전체 목표 1을 달성하기 위하여, 1단계 목표를 굴착 전에 지질환경을 모사하고 굴착거동을 예측 하는 모든 지표기반 조사결과로부터 지질환경 모델을 구축하는 것으로 설정하였다. 전체 목표 2를 달성하기 위하여, 2단계 목표는 지하시설을 위한 상세 설계 개념과 건설 계획을 수립하는 것으로 설정하였다. 본 논문은 결정질암내 지하수의 수리지화학적 특성을 조사하고 평가하기 위한 지질통합적 방법을 소개한다.

To understand the sex reversal characteristics in the longtooth grouper (Epinephelus bruneus), this study examined the sex reversal and artificial masculinization of wild caught E. bruneus reared in indoor rearing tank after a 17α-methyltestosterone injection. To domesticate a broodstock, 64 wild caught E. bruneus, between 47.0 to 110.0 cm in total length and from 1.5 to 21.4 kg in body weight, were reared in indoor rearing tank (4.0 to 5.0 m wide, and 2.5 to 3.0 m depth) for four years. Seven specimens showed sex reversal from female to male during indoor rearing condition, whose total length and body weights were from 63.0 to 99.0 cm and from 4.4 to 13.2 kg, respectively. After inducing artificial masculinization in 14 female E. bruneus with a 17α-methyltestosterone (2.0 mg/kg BW) implants for 3 years, spermiation occurred in 9 specimens (total length: 54.0 to 68.0 cm, body weight: 2.3 to 4.3 kg). Among the female to male sex reversals, two specimens returned back to being female, whose body weights were 2.8 kg (initially 2.6 kg) and 2.7 kg (initially 2.3 kg). Therefore, this study suggested that E. bruneus (> 3.0 kg) was more effective in masculinizing by 17α-methyltestosterone implants.

A 72-year-old female patient was admitted to our hospital with a rapidly growing left eyelid mass. Other ocular findings were normal. Excision biopsy and a cytological study were performed. Histopathology of the excised tissue showed malignant cells in extracellular lumens and glands with prominent micronuclei and mitotic figures. The tissue was also strongly positive for cytokeratin. As a result, of these fingings primary eyelid hidradenocarcinoma was diagnosed. This case demonstrates that hidradenocarcinoma should be considered in the differential diagnosis of primary eyelid tumors.

The length of solar cycle 23 has been prolonged up to about 13 years. Many studies have speculated that the solar cycle 23/24 minimum will indicate the onset of a grand minimum of solar activity, such as the Maunder Minimum. We check the trends of solar (sunspot number, solar magnetic fields, total solar irradiance, solar radio flux, and frequency of solar X-ray flare), interplanetary (interplanetary magnetic field, solar wind and galactic cosmic ray intensity), and geomagnetic (Ap index) parameters (SIG parameters) during solar cycles 21-24. Most SIG parameters during the period of the solar cycle 23/24 minimum have remarkably low values. Since the 1970s, the space environment has been monitored by ground observatories and satellites. Such prevalently low values of SIG parameters have never been seen. We suggest that these unprecedented conditions of SIG parameters originate from the weakened solar magnetic fields. Meanwhile, the deep 23/24 solar cycle minimum might be the portent of a grand minimum in which the global mean temperature of the lower atmosphere is as low as in the period of Dalton or Maunder minimum.
