An outline is given of our development of mosaic CCD cameras. Hardware and data reduction software of two operational cameras are described. Scientific objectives of wide-field imaging with the cameras are briefly described.

Non-LTE calculations, with the non-thermal ionization effects included, indicated that for electron bombardment, the Hα line is widely broadened and shows a strong central reversal. Significant enhancements at the line wings of Lyα and Lyβ are also predicted at the beginning of the impulsive phase of flares. For the proton bombardment, no strong broadening and no large central reversal are expected. However, due to proton-hydrogen charge exchange, the enhancements at the red wings of Lyα and Lyβ lines at the early impulsive phase of flares are significant. Our results show that the electron beam can also in some cases generate visible and UV continuum emission in white-light flares. However, at the onset phase, a negative flare may appear within several seconds, due to the increase of the H- opacity. Another spectroscopic signature of energetic particles, i.e. the impact polarization of atomic lines, is also mentioned.

We have studied the response of molecular clouds in the Galactic disk to a rotating bar by conducting Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) simulations for the Galaxy in order to understand the dynamical structures of the Galactic Center (GC) molecular clouds, and their implications. In our study it was found that the structures of GC molecular clouds could be induced by the combined effects of rotating bar potential, the hydrodynamic collisions and gravitational miss collisions between the clouds.

We review observational evidence bearing on the formation of a prototypical large spiral galaxy, the Milky Way. New ground- and space-based studies of globular star clusters and dwarf spheroidal galaxies provide a wealth of information to constrain theories of galaxy formation. It appears likely that the Milky Way formed by an combination of rapid, dissipative collapse and mergers, but the relative contributions of these two mechanisms remain controversial. New evidence, however, indicates that initial star and star cluster formation occurred simultaneously over a volume that presently extends to twice the distance of the Magellanic Clouds.

We have searched for the 2 mm transitions of H 2 C O H + ( 2 02 − 1 01 ) and H 2 13 C O ( 2 02 − 1 01 , 2 12 − 1 11 , a n d 2 11 − 1 10 ) toward the dense interstellar molecular clouds Orion A, TMC-1 and L134N using the FCRAO 14 m telescope. None of the transitions have been detected except the H 2 13 C O transitions toward Orion-KL. We set upper limits for the abundances of the protonated formaldehyde ion ( H 2 C O H + ) , which are close to the abundances expected from ion-molecule chemistry.

벼멸구 생태형 1, 2, 3의 형태의 차이를 구별하고자 장시형과 단시형 암수를 대상으로 형태적 변화를 관찰하였다. 암컷은 생식 부위인 Abdominal lateral lobes의 좌우 부위를 비교 조사하였다. 수컷은 앞다리, 가운데 다리, 뒷다리 부절의 Unguitractor plate를 조사하였다. 생태형 2의 단시형 암컷은 Abdominal lateral lobes의 기부가 잘라진 것으로 생태형 1과 3보다 많았다. Unguitractor plate의 경우 생태형 2는 장단시형 암 수 모두 부절 안쪽으로 함입되어 있었다.

We have mapped the C 3 H 2 2 12 − 1 01 transition line toward the Sgr A molecular cloud on a 1' grid spacing and derived C 3 H 2 column densities of 3 \~ 7 × 10 14 c m − 2 for molecular clouds of Sgr A. The fractional abundances of C 3 H 2 relative to H 2 are obtained to be 3 \~ 6 × 10 − 9 , which are slightly lower than that for the cold dark cloud TMC-1 but are enhanced by factors of 5-60 compared to those for Sgr B2 and the Orion extended ridge. We also estimate from the C 3 H 2 column densities total masses of \~ 10 6 M ⨀ for two clouds (M - 0.13 - 0.08 and M - 0.02 - 0.07), which are thought to be close to the virial equilibrium. We suggest that the large abundance of C 3 H 2 in Sgr A may be partly due to the activities of the Galactic center.

우리나라에 발생하고 있는 벼멸구 생태형의 형태적 차이를 구명하고자 생태형 1, 2, 3의 단시형 암컷과 숫컷의 다리부분의 형태를 관찰하였다. 앞다리, 가운데 다리 그리고 뒷다리의 제3부절의 형태를 51개 부위에서 조사한 다음 통계학적 분석을 위하여 정준 판별 분석법을 도입하였다. 각 생태형간의 Mahalanobis distance는 숫컷의 경우 생태형 2와 3 사이에서 가장 짧았고, 암컷은 생태형 1과 2 사이에서 가장 길었다. Scatter plot diagram상에서 각 생태 형간 분리현상이 뚜렷하여 중심점이 각각 다르게 나타났고 각 생태형에 속하는 개체는 중심점 부근에 고르게 분포하였다. 각 생태형간의 Group membership 조사에서 암수 모두 각 생태형은 각각 동일한 생텨형을 분류되었다.

A laboratory bioassay that incorporates Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) purified crystal protein toxins into an artificial diet has identified three toxins, CryIA(b), CryIA(c), and CryIIA, to by effective against the yellow stemborer, Scirpophaga incertulas(Walker). Research is aimed at engineering rice that incorporates genes of one of or more of these toxins so as to mimic the insecticidal action of the insect to Bt. The paper discusses potential strategies for slowing the rate of adaptation that include the use of multiple Bt toxins, promoters that express the toxins only in specific plant tissues at specific times, and mixing transgenic and non-transgenic plants.
