        Microstructure, electric, and thermal properties of the Ta-Cu composite is evaluated for the application in electric contact materials. This material has the potential to be used in a medium for a high current range of current conditions, replacing Ag-MO, W, and WC containing materials. The optimized SPS process conditions are a temperature of 900oC for a 5 min holding time under a 30 MPa mechanical pressure. Comparative research is carried out for the calculated and actual values of the thermal and electric properties. The range of actual thermal and electric properties of the Ta-Cu composite are 50~300W/mk and 10~90 %IACS, respectively, according to the compositional change of the 90 to 10 wt% Ta-Cu system. The results related to the electric contact properties, suggest that less than 50 wt% of Ta compositions are possible in applications of electric contact materials.

        동맥경화 상태에서는 혈관이 수축물질에 예민하게 반응 함으로써 혈압의 급격한 변화에 대한 회복능력이 저하한다. 한편 뽕나무 잎에는 고지방식의 섭취로 인해 발생하는 동맥경화증의 발달을 감소시킬 가능성이 있는 여러 물질이 있다고 추정된다. 뽕나무 잎을 백서에 투여하면 고지 방식에 의해 유발된 혈관이 예민해지는 현상을 감소시킬 수 있는지 시험하기 위하여 고지방식 및 뽕나무잎을 8주 간 투여하고 혈관수축 물질에 대한 혈압의 반응성을 시험 하였다. 순환기반사에 따른 혈압반응 감수성차이를 최소화 할 목적으로 동물의 중추신경계를 파괴(pithing)하고 시험 하였다. 고콜레스테롤을 함유한 식이를 공급한 백서에서 교감신경계 전기자극이나 norepinephrine, phenylephrine, angiotensin II 및 vasopressin 등의 투여로 유발된 혈압상승반응이 증강되었으며, 사료에 뽕잎을 2% 또는 10% 첨 가하면 정상적인 혈압상승반응을 보여주었다. 교감신경계를 파괴하지 않은 채 마취만 한 백서에서는 고콜레스테롤에 의한 반응증강이나 뽕잎에 의한 변화를 관찰할 수 없었다. 이 결과로 부터 뽕잎이 동맥경화에서 나타나는 혈관반응성 변화를 방지하는 데 유용한 것으로 판단할 수 있을 것이다.

        The purpose of this study was to investigate anti-oxidant effects of loach muscle-derived peptides in vitro and in vivo. Loach muscle peptides were prepared by 4 different methods: boiling (B), enzymatic hydrolysis (E), boiling and enzymatic hydrolysis (BE), alkaline and enzymatic hydrolysis (AE). Two different in vitro analyses, DPPH radical scavenging activity and xanthine-xanthine oxidase-induced superoxide radical scavenging activity, were performed. All the four preparations showed concentration-dependent DPPH radical scavenging activity. However, superoxide radical scavenging activity was found only with AE and E preparations. To evaluate in vivo effects, mice were fed with 10% AE-containing diets for 4 weeks before hepatotoxicity induction with CCl4. In serum glutamate-oxaloacetate transaminase (GOT) and glutamate-pyruvate transaminase (GPT) levels, total antioxidant levels, and relative hepatic weight ratio, no evidence for anti-oxidant effects was found with AE indicating the absence of anti-oxidant effect in the in vivo mouse experiment. It needs to be clarified why anti-oxidant activity of loach protein hydrolysates was not evident in vivo. Furthermore, these results suggest that in vivo evaluation is crucial in demonstrating anti-oxidant activities.

        Perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) is one of the most important grass species in the world's temperate zones. It is used as high-quality forage in pastures and for recreational use as turf in golf courses, lawns and parks. Genetic improvement of perennial ryegrass is difficult due to its self-incompatibility. Consequently, progress by conventional breeding can be slow. Genetic transformation is an alternative that permits direct introduction of useful genes into a plant's genome and is becoming a powerful tool to complement conventional breeding. To improve environmental stress tolerance and quality of perennial ryegrass by introducing better and useful genes into the genome, we have developed a rapid and efficient transformation system using Agrobacterium-mediated gene transfer system.

        In the present study, we have used an annealing-control-primer (ACP)-based differentially display RT-PCR method to identify salt-stress-induced differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in barley leaves. Using 120 ACPs, a total of 11 up-regulated genes were identified and sequenced. Temporal expression patterns of some up-regulated DEGs in response to salt stress were further analyzed by Northern blot analysis. The possible roles of these identified genes are discussed within the context of their putative role in response to salt stress. Thus, the identification of some novel genes-such as SnRK1-type protein kinase; 17 kDa, class I, small heat shock protein; and RNase S-like protein precursor genes-may offer a new avenue for better understanding the salt stress response in plants, knowledge which might be helpful for developing future strategies.

        미얀마 모곡변성대에서 배터리 소재광물로 주목받고 있는 리튬 광물의 산출이 보고되었다. 모곡변성대 3개(신구, 모곡, 모메익) 주요 페그마타이트 산출지의 광화작용을 예비분석한 결과는 다음과 같다. 신구 지역은 레피돌라이트 및 루벨라이트가 함께 산출되기도 하고(레트판라 2번 및 7번 페그마타이트), 루벨라이트만 산출 되기도 한다(레트판라 페그마타이트 4). 모곡 지역은 레피돌라이트 및 루벨라이트가 함께 산출된다(사칸지 페그마타이트). 모메익 지역은 레피돌라이트 및 루벨라이트가 함께 산출되기도 하고(페여우 페그마타이트), 루벨라이트만 산출 되기도 한다(케첼 이와르 팃 페그마타이트). 향후 모곡변성대 상기 페그마타이트를 대상으로 리튬광물의 자원량평가를 위한 정밀탐사의 필요성이 있다고 판단된다.

        Most forage crops growing under field conditions are often being exposed to various environmental stresses such as drought, freezing, high temperature, waterlogging and climate change. A combination of grass breeding approaches will likely be needed to improve significantly the environmental stresses tolerance of forage crops in the field. Attempts have been taken by grass breeders to develop tolerant varieties of different crops for environmental stress. A new tall fescue variety (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) named ‘Purumi’ was developed by the National Institute of Animal Science, Rural Development Administration from 1999 to 2007. For synthetic seed production of this new variety, 5 superior clones, EFa9108, EFa0010, EFa0020, EFa0108, and EFa0202 were selected and polycrossed. The agronomic growth characteristics and forage production capability of the seeds were studied at Cheonan from 2004 to 2005, and regional trials were conducted in Cheonan, Pyungchang, Jeju, and Jinju from 2008 to 2010. ‘Purumi’ showed enhanced winter hardiness, disease resistance, and regrowth ability as compared to ‘Fawn’. The dry matter yield of ‘Purumi’ was about 5.6% higher as 16,821kg/ha than that of ‘Fawn’. However, the nutritive value of both varieties was similar. When this new variety of tall fescue, Purumi, has been developed and distributed with its most remarkable adaptability for Korean climates and superior value as a livestock feed, it is expected to play an important role for a new restoration of the pasture industry in Korea.

        Fermentation of ice apple wine from freeze-concentrated Fuji apple juice to 36 °Brix was carried out using Saccharomyces cerevisiae SS89, a sugar-tolerant wine yeast strain. The characteristics of the fermentation and the properties of ice apple wine were compared with those of S. cerevisiae W-3, an industrial wine yeast that was used as a control in this study. During the fermentation, the alcohol content increased more rapidly by S. cerevisiae SS89 together with the decrease of the soluble solid content, compared to S. cerevisiae W-3. It reached 12% (v/v) after 15 days of fermentation by S. cerevisiae SS89 (12.4%, v/v) and 21 days by S. cerevisiae W-3 (12.6%, v/v). The soluble solid contents of the SS89 and W-3 wines were 24.0 and 23.6 °Brix, respectively. Lactic acid was detected at the highest level, followed by malic aid, among the organic acids in both wines. No big differences in the organic acid contents were observed based on the strains. In the SS89 wine, higher levels of methanol, propanol, butanol, and isoamyl alcohol were detected, together with a lower isobutanol content, compared with the W-3 wine. The SS89 wine showed higher level of intensity as well as higher Hunter's L and b color values compared to the W-3 wine. In the sensory evaluation, similar scores in color, flavor, taste, and overall preference were obtained in the two wines. Therefore, S. cerevisiae SS89 was thought to be useful for the rapid fermentation of ice apple wine.
