Malaria is notorious disease to transmitted by Anopheline mosquitoes. In Korea, Plasmodium vivax malaria was re-introduce in 1993 and exceed to more than 4,000 cases in early 2000s. Based upon our control efforts, it was sharply decreased and diagnosis 576 cases in last year. We made Action Plan in this year for certification of malaria elimination by WHO until year 2024. In this plan, we need to strengthen our capacity of vector surveillance and control. For vector surveillance, we will introduce daily mosquito population monitoring system. In 2020, every malaria high risk area install two mosquito counters and send information to main server. For vector control, we will try building capacity of malaria mosquito control people in the Public Health center and military section. To decrease no. of mosquitoes, we will concentrate our resource to cattle shed, which is main blood source of Anopheline mosquitoes. Based on the ecological characteristic of Anopheline, we will adopt Integrate Vector management (IVM) including physical, chemical and biological method. Based on the reconciliation with North Korea, we will support technical and material support for malaria elimination.

The intracellular endosymbiont bacterium Wolbachia is currently known to be the most common in arthropods. It mayleads to male-killing, cytoplasmic incompatibility, parthenogenesis and feminization of genetic males with large impacton host ecology and evolution in mosquitoes. Mosquitoes was collected in four areas with various ecological conditionsusing black light traps and Wolbachia detection from the collected mosquitoes was carried out by PCR using WSP andFtsZ genes primers. A total of 385 individual mosquitoes were screened. 213 mosquitoes (55.3%) belonging to four specieswere positive for Wolbachia infections. Aedes albopictus showed the highest infection rate (100%). Wolbachia infectionand type were firstly reported in Aedes in Korea.

A climate change has been reported as the most important issue related with vector borne diseases eg. Zika and Denguemainly transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes. In 2016, 24 imported Zika virus disease cases and > 300 cases of Dengue feverwere reported in the Republic of Korea (ROK). In the ROK, the control of disease vectors has been mainly carried outusing chemicals, which resulted in high insecticide resistance. Many studies and projects in Korea Center for DiseaseControl & Preventionfor overcoming the insecticide resistance of disease vectors have been carried out and some nationaldisease vector management systems for effective vector control are established throughout the ROK. In this presentation, the national vector management systems and studies will be addressed.Key words : Disease vectors, National management, the Republic of Korea, climate change

This study was performed to recognize species composition of Anopheline mosquitoes and infection rates of Plasmodium vivax in the northern part of South Korea. Adult mosquitoes were collected at 9 Republic of Korea (ROK) army installations in northern part of Geyonggi Province near the demilitarized zone (DMZ) using black light traps. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used to identify collected Anopheline specimens and detect P. vivax from them. During June to August 2016, total 481 anopheline mosquitoes were collected and identified. Anopheles kleini was the most frequently collected (56.1%), and followed by An. pullus (16.6%), An. sinensis (16.2%), An. belenrae (7.5%) and An. lesteri (1.5%). 6 pools (4.0%) were positive for P. vivax among 150 pools. The minimum infection rates (MIR) was 1.24. Our ongoing study will provide a meaningful data for the effective malaria elimination strategy.
