Malaria is notorious disease to transmitted by Anopheline mosquitoes. In Korea, Plasmodium vivax malaria was re-introduce in 1993 and exceed to more than 4,000 cases in early 2000s. Based upon our control efforts, it was sharply decreased and diagnosis 576 cases in last year. We made Action Plan in this year for certification of malaria elimination by WHO until year 2024. In this plan, we need to strengthen our capacity of vector surveillance and control. For vector surveillance, we will introduce daily mosquito population monitoring system. In 2020, every malaria high risk area install two mosquito counters and send information to main server. For vector control, we will try building capacity of malaria mosquito control people in the Public Health center and military section. To decrease no. of mosquitoes, we will concentrate our resource to cattle shed, which is main blood source of Anopheline mosquitoes. Based on the ecological characteristic of Anopheline, we will adopt Integrate Vector management (IVM) including physical, chemical and biological method. Based on the reconciliation with North Korea, we will support technical and material support for malaria elimination.
This study was conducted to develop a Han-sik database as well as to assess the effects of Han-sik on dietary quality among Koreans. The Han-sik database was developed by a focus group composed of food and nutrition specialists considering the results of Han-sik perception surveys conducted in previous studies for frequently consumed dishes. Among the 1,322 dish items identified in the 4th (2007-2009) Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES), 973 items (73.6%) were classified as Han-sik. Han-sik usage was defined as the percentage of Han-sik items of all individually consumed dish items in the dietary data of 22,113 subjects who participated in a 24-hour diet recall in the 4th (2007-2009) KNHANES. Dietary quality was evaluated based on adherence to the Korean Food Guidance System (KFGS), which was calculated as the percentage of the number of servings consumed in each food group out of recommended servings according to age and sex. Mean usage of Han-sik was 80.1% and was higher in older age groups, rural areas, as well as in households at the lowest income level. Han-sik usage was also higher on weekdays as well as for breakfast. Adherence to the KFGS was significantly higher for grains, meat · fish · egg · beans, vegetables, and fruits (p<0.001) but lower for milk · dairy products and oils · fats · sugars (p<0.001) across the quartiles of Han-sik usage. The results of this study indicate that Han-sik usage is high among Koreans. Further studies are needed to update the Han-sik database as well as investigate the association between health-related factors and Han-sik use.

Background : Stevia rebaudiana (Asteraceae), a perennial plant, has been used as a low caloric sweetener and therapeutic agent for diabetes, hypertension, myocardial, and antimicrobial infections. It has been commonly used leaves and stems because of their high anti-oxidative potential. The present research was carried out to explore anti-oxidative and anti-melanogenic effects of aqueous extract of Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni flos in B16F10 cells.
Methods and Results : Anti-oxidant activity of Stevia flos extract (SFE) was determined by using 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl hydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging assay, nitric oxide (NO) radical scavenging method, and reducing power method. The results showed that the total phenolic content of SFE was 63.154 ± 0.0002 ㎍·QE/100㎎ and the total flavonoid was 8.64 1 ± 0.002 ㎍·GAE/100㎎. SFE exhibited a big significant effect on NO radical scavenging activity (IC50: 179.6 ㎍/㎖) comparing with standard ascorbic acid (IC50: 368.6 ㎍/㎖), and showed concentration dependent DPPH radical scavenging activity (IC50: 131.8 ㎍/㎖). Anti-melanogenic effect of SFE was also examined with B16F10 melanocytes. The amount of melanin synthesis followed by α-melanocyte stimulating hormone on B16F10 cells were significantly reduced in the presence of SFE treatment (p < 0.05). SFE also suppressed the tyrosinase activity (p < 0.05) and α-glucosidase activity (p < 0.05).
Conclusion : These results provide evidence Stevia rebaudiana flos has an antioxidant potency and can be used as an anti-melanogenic agent.
Angelica tenuissima, also known as Ligusticum tenuissimum, is classified as a food-related plant and has been used as traditional medicines treating headache and anemia in Asia. However, its anti-melanogenic effect has not been reported in detail. When the extract of Angelica tenuissima (ATE) was prepared by the extraction with 70% EtOH at 80°C (final yield = 22%), the contents of decursin and Z-ligustilide in ATE were determined 0.06% and 8.43%, respectively. Total flavonoid and phenolic content in mg ATE were 5.52±0.07 ㎍ quercetin equivalents and 237.27±13.24 ㎍ gallic acid equivalents, respectively. Antioxidant capacity of ATE determined by DPPH and ABTS assay was increased with a dose dependent manner up to 1000 ㎍/㎖. The amount of melanin synthesis followed by α-melanocyte stimulating hormone on B16F10 cells were significantly reduced in the presence of ATE (250 to 1000 ㎍/㎖, p<0.05). ATE (125 to 1000 ㎍/㎖, p<0.05) suppressed the tyrosinase activity but did not show any significant effect on α-glucosidase activity at the same condition. Taken together, ATE possesses tyrosinase inhibitory potential with significant antioxidant capacities. These effects of ATE might be involved in suppression of melanin synthesis, at least, in B16F10 cells. The anti-melanogenic potential of ATE will provide an insight into developing a new skin whitening product.
Diverse studies are being conducted on sewage sludge treatment and recycling methods, but the demand for a lowcost treatment technology is high because the sewage sludge has an 80% or higher water content and a high energy consumption cost. For this purpose, the waste volume can be reduced and solid fuel can be obtained from the Thermal Hydrolysis Reaction (THR) that consumes a small amount of energy. The experiment was conducted at a reaction temperature of 170-220oC and maintain for 1 hour at the final temperature. According to the Capillary Suction Time (CST) and Time to Filter (TTF) evaluation, the dewater ability was good after the temperature reached 200oC and did not significantly differ at the 200oC and higher reaction temperatures. The heating value of the dehydrated solid product was 3,800-4,200 kcal/kg, and its yield rate decreased from approximately 80% to 60% with the increase in the reaction temperature. To evaluate the efficiency of anaerobic digestion, the water quality of the liquid product was analyzed based on the reaction temperature. At the temperatures of 200oC and higher, the concentration of ammonia, which increases the pH and hinders anaerobic digestion rapidly increased. From the overall evaluation of the dehydrating efficiency, solid fuel quality, and anaerobic digestion efficiency during the thermal hydrolysis of sewage sludge, it is concluded that the optimal operating temperature is 200oC.
