Recently, BNS (Best System) developed a system for evaluation and classification of soil and concrete wastes generated from nuclear power plant decommissioning. It is composed of various modules for container loading, weight measurement, contamination evaluation, waste classification, stacking, storage and control. The contamination evaluation module of the system has two sub modules. One is for quick measurement with NaI (Tl) detector and the other is for accurate measurement with HPGe detector. The container used at the system for wastes handling has capacity of 100 kg and made of stainless steel. According to the measurement result of Co-60 and Cs-137, the waste is classified as waste for disposal or waste for clearance. Performance of the system was demonstrated using RM (Reference Material) radiation source. This year, necessity of system improvement was suggested due to revised operation requirements. So, the system should show throughput of more than 1 ton/hr and Minimum Detectable Activity (MDA) of less than 0.01 Bq/g (1/10 of criteria for regulatory clearance) for Co-60 and Cs-137. And soil waste become main target of the system. For this, the container used for soil waste handling should have capacity of 200 kg. As a result, material for the container need to be changed from stainless steel to plastic or FRP (Fiber Reinforced Plastics). And large area detector should be introduced to the system to enhance processing speed of the system. Additionally, container storage rack and conveyor system should be modified to handle 200 kg capacity container. Finally, moving path of the container will be redesigned for enhanced throughput of the system. In this paper, concept development of the system was suggested and based on that, system development will be followed.
Spent ion exchange resins have been generated during the operation of nuclear facilities. These resins include radioactive nuclides. It is needed to fabricate them into a stable form for final disposal. Cement solidification process is a useful method for the fabrication of them into a waste form for final disposal. In this study, proper conditions for the fabrication of them into a stable waste form were determined using the cement solidification process. In-drum waste forms were then produced at the conditions, where the stability of representative samples was evaluated for final disposal. The samples were satisfied to the Waste Acceptance Criteria for low and intermediate level radioactive waste disposal sites. This result can be utilized to derive optimal conditions for the fabrication of spent ion exchange resins into a final disposal form.
Level measurement of liquid radwaste is essential for inventory management of treatment system. Among various methods, level measurement based on differential pressure has many advantages. First, it is possible to measure the liquid level of the system regardless of liquid type. Second, as the instrument doesn’t need to be installed near the tank, there is no need to contact the tank when managing it. Therefore, workers’ radiation dose from the system can be decreased. Finally, although it depends on the accuracy, the price of the instrument is relatively low. With these advantages, in general, liquid radwaste level in a tank is measured using differential pressure in the treatment system. Not only the advantages described above, there are some disadvantages. As the liquid in the system is waste, it is not pure but has some suspended materials. These materials can be accumulated in tanks and pipes where the liquids move to come into direct contact with pneumatic pipes that are essential in differential pressure instruments. As a result, in case of a treatment using heat source, the accumulated materials may become sludge causing interference in pneumatic pipes. And this can change the pressure which also affects the level measured. In conclusion, in case of liquid storage tanks in which the situation cannot be checked, the proficiency of an operator becomes important.
There are various types of level gauging method such as using float, differential pressure, hypersonic, displacement and so on. In this study, among them, the method utilizing the differential pressure was reviewed. The strengths include: the differential pressure type level gauge can measure the level without direct contact of the sensor with media. That is to say, the level can be measured even if the sensor is far away from the tank. And regardless of the size of the tank, the level can be measured if the pneumatic pipes are installed. The weaknesses include: the sensor needs intermedium to recognize the level. The intermedium utilizes a fluid, which is compressed air. It is difficult to handle that compressed air has the properties of a gas. And to make compressed air needs compressor, tank and pneumatic pipes. So if you have many tanks, you need to install exponentially the pneumatic pipes. As well, level measurement range is limited to the points where the pneumatic pipes of the tank is installed. And if a compressed air that supplies to the sensor leaks, uncertainty will increase. A compressed air is colorless and odorless, so it’s difficult to pinpoint the leak. Finally, events like cracks and clogging can cause inaccurate measurement. Rather than using only differential pressure, it is better to use another measurement method according to the situation of the facility.
In this introduction, test devices for radwaste characterization specimen was developed and utilized. In order to permanently dispose of solidified radwastes, not only radioactive characterization but also physical & chemical characterization shall be performed to assess compliance with the waste acceptance criteria. Waste acceptance criteria can be made up measurement of free standing water, compressive strength test, thermal cycling test, radiation resistance test, leaching test, immersion test. Approximately, the equipment for each test is sorted out five types. equipment for making characterization specimen, equipment for compressive strength test, equipment for thermal cycling test, equipment for radiation resistance test, equipment for Immersion test and leaching test. Equipment for making characterization specimen is operated the dry process. The equipment of two types: one (sampling device) that cores solidified radioactive waste in a drum, and the other (cutting machine) that properly cuts the coring samples. Sampling device is not used in industry, so it is specially manufactured, cutting machine is using ready-made products. In addition, devices for compressive strength test and thermal cycling test are using ready- made products. Facility for Radiation resistance test is located in Jeong-eup. For the efficient test, a table was manufactured in the columnar form like the specimen. Finally, devices for immersion test and leaching test are so transformed that contact all surfaces of the specimen with the liquid.
