        Polyacetylene (PA) films with vertically aligned fibril morphology were synthesized in homeotropic nematic liquid crystal (N-LC) solvent by using a magnetic field of 5 Tesla as an external perturbation. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) photographs indicated that the lengths of fibrils from the substrate were 5-35μm, depending on polymerization time. Carbonization was carried out using iodine-doped PA film and a morphology-retaining carbonization method. From the SEM results, we confirmed that the vertical morphology of the PA remains unchanged even after carbonization at 800℃. The weight loss of the films due to carbonization at 800℃ is about 20% of the weight of the film before iodine doping. It is expected that vertically aligned carbon might be a precursor for preparing vertical graphite materials, which materials could be useful for electrochemical energy storage and cell electrodes.

        Cold spray deposition using Titanium powder was carried out to investigate the effects of powder morphology and powder preheating on the coating properties such as porosity and hardness. The in-flight particle velocity of Ti powder in cold spray process was directly measured using the PIV (particle image velocimetry) equipment. Two types of powders (spherical and irregular ones) were used to manufacture cold sprayed coating layer. The results showed that the irregular morphology particle appeared higher in-flight particle velocity than that of the spherical one under the same process condition. The coating layer using irregular morphology powder represented lower porosity level and higher hardness. Two different preheating conditions (no preheating and preheating at ) were used in the process of cold spraying. The porosity decreased and the hardness increased by conducting preheating at . It was found that the coating properties using different preheating conditions were dependent not on the particle velocity but on the deformation temperature of particle. The deposition mechanism of particles in cold spray process was also discussed based on the experimental results of in flight-particle velocity.

        Carbon materials were synthesized by pyrolysis from fibers of Corn-straw (Zea mays), Rice-straw (Oryza sativa), Jute-straw (Corchorus capsularis) Bamboo (Bombax bambusa), Bagass (Saccharum officinarum), Cotton (Bombax malabaricum), and Coconut (Cocos nucifera); these materials were characterized by scanning electron microscope, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Raman spectra. All carbon materials are micro sized with large pores or channel like morphology. The unique complex spongy, porous and channel like structure of Carbon shows a lot of similarity with the original anatomy of the plant fibers used as precursor. Waxy contents like tyloses and pits present on fiber tracheids that were seen in the inherent anatomy disappear after pyrolysis and only the carbon skeleton remained; XRD analysis shows that carbon shows the development of a (002) plane, with the exception of carbon obtained from bamboo, which shows a very crystalline character. Raman studies of all carbon materials showed the presence of G- and D-bands of almost equal intensities, suggesting the presence of graphitic carbon as well as a disordered graphitic structure. Carbon materials possessing lesser density, larger surface area, more graphitic with less of an sp3 carbon contribution, and having pore sizes around 10μm favor hydrogen adsorption. Carbon materials synthesized from bagass meet these requirements most effectively, followed by cotton fiber, which was more effective than the carbon synthesized from the other plant fibers.

        본 연구에서는 응고조와 도프조성에 따른 투과특성을 알아보기 위해 첨가제로 PEG, PVP를 사용하였고, 상전이법을 이용하여 PSf 평막을 제조하였다. 고분자의 농도, 첨가제의 농도 그리고 응고조의 조성을 달리하여 제막하였다. 평막의 모폴로지와 수투과도를 각각 FE-SEM과 수투과 테스트 장치를 이용하여 측정하였다. 가장 높은 수투과도(986 L/mh)는 PSf 15 wt%, PEG 25 wt% 그리고 응고조로 물이 사용되었을 경우 나타났다. PSf/PEG조성일때 응고조에 DMAc의 함량이 증가할수록 순수투과도는 급격히 감소하였다. 그러한 결과 첨가제의 함량과 응고조의 조성의 변화가 모폴로지와 수투과 특성에 영향을 미치는 것을 확인하였다.

        In the present work, exfoliated graphite nanoplatelets (EGN) of 1 μm in average particle size, which were prepared by heating at 900℃ and then subjected to ultrasonic, ball-milling, and vibratory ball-milling techniques, were uniformly incorporated into phenylethynyl-terminated polyimide (PETI-5) resin. The fracture surface morphology and the electrical resistivity of the EGN/PETI-5 composites were investigated. The results showed that the fracture surfaces and the electrical resistivity strongly depended on the EGN content. The fracture surfaces became more ductile and roughened with increasing EGN and the electrical resistivity was gradually decreased with increased EGN loading, indicating the percolation threshold at 5 wt% EGN.

        기체분리용 분리막의 투과성능을 향상시키기 위해 비이온성 첨가제로 Triton X-100을 사용하여 건습식 상분리법에 의하여 polysulfone 중공사 막을 제조하였으며, 첨가제에 따른 기체투과 거동의 변화를 관찰하였다. 또한 에어갭, 고분자의 농도, 도프탱크 온도와 같은 다양한 방사 조건을 조절하여 그 영향을 관찰하였다. 제조된 중공사 막은 전자주사현미경(SEM)과 bubble flow meter를 통해 각각 모폴로지와 기체투과 특성에 대한 평가를 실시하였다. SEM 분석을 통해 Triton X-100이 첨가된 막은 다양한 에어갭에서도 매끄러운 외부 스킨층을 가지는 것을 확인하였다. 중공사 막의 거대기공은 에어갭이 4에서 90 cm로 증가함에 따라 더욱 발달하며, 높은 투과도를 나타내는 것을 확인하였다. 또한 상대적으로 낮은 고분자 농도(30 wt% polysulfone)와 높은 첨가제 농도(15 wt% Triton X-100) 조건에서 높은 투과도를 나타내었다. 도프 탱크 온도를 조절하였을 때, 100℃에서 제조된 막은 첨가제와 용매의 휘발로 인해 낮은 투과특성을 나타냈다.

        침지법을 이용한 상전이 공정으로 polysulfone (PSF), polyethersulfone (PES) and polyphenylsulfone (PPS)의 정밀여과 평막을 제조하였다. 용매로는 dimethyl formamide (DMF)를, 습윤제 고분자로는 polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP)를 사용하였으며 pore 형성 촉매로 2-butoxyethanol (BE)을 사용하였다. 얻어진 분리막들은 SEM과 micro permporometer를 이용하여 morphology를 분석하였으며 순수투과도를 측정하여 분리막의 투과성능을 측정하였다. BE의 첨가를 통하여 분리막의 기공을 성장시킬 수 있었으며 고분자 구조에 따라 분리막의 morphology 변화를 관찰할 수 있었다. PSF, PES, PPS 분리막의 평균기공의 크기는 각각 0.282, 0.330, 0.308mum이었으며 공극률은 68.5, 66.1, 66.4%로 유사한 값을 나타내었다. 그러나 PPS 분리막의 경우 PSF, PES 분리막에 비해 높은 기공 밀도와 좁은 기공 분포를 관찰할 수 있었다. 그 결과 PPS 분리막의 순수 투과 유량은 357L/㎡ hr으로 PSF (196L/㎡ hr)나 PES membrane (214L/㎡ hr) 분리막에 비해 훨씬 증가함을 보였다.

        We have revisited the ACS Virgo Cluster Survey (ACSVCS), a Hubble Space Telescope program to obtain ACS/WFC g and z bands imaging for a sample of 100 early-type galaxies in the Virgo Cluster. In this study, we examine 51 nucleated early-type galaxies in the ACSVCS in order to look into the relationship between the photometric and structural properties of stellar nuclei and their host galaxies. We morphologically dissect galaxies into five classes. We note that (1) the stellar nuclei of dwarf early-type galaxies (dS0, dE, and dE,N) are generally fainter and bluer with g > 18.95 and (g-z) < 1.40 compared to some brighter and redder counterparts of the ellipticals (E) and lenticular galaxies (S0), (2) the g-band half-light radii of stellar nuclei of all dwarf early-type galaxies (dS0, dE, and dE,N) are smaller than 20 pc and their average is about 4 pc, and (3) the colors of red stellar nuclei with (g - z) > 1.40 in bright ellipticals and lenticular galaxies are bluer than their host galaxies colors. We also show that most of the unusually "red" stellar nuclei with (g-z) > 1.54 in the ACSVCS are the central parts of bright ellipticals and lenticular galaxies. Furthermore, we present multi photometric band color - color plots that can be used to break the age-metallicity degeneracy particularly by inclusion of the thermally pulsing-asymptotic giant branch (TP-AGB) phases of stellar evolution in the stellar population models.

        We examine the dependence of the morphology of spiral galaxies on the environment using the KIAS Value Added Galaxy Catalog (VAGC) which is derived from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) DR7. Our goal is to understand whether the local environment or global conditions dominate in determining the morphology of spiral galaxies. For the analysis, we conduct a morphological classification of galaxies in 20 X-ray selected Abell clusters up to z~0.06, using SDSS color images and the X-ray data from the Northern ROSAT All-Sky (NORAS) catalog. We analyze the distribution of arm classes along the clustercentric radius as well as that of Hubble types. To segregate the effect of local environment from the global environment, we compare the morphological distribution of galaxies in two X-lay luminosity groups, the low-Lx clusters (Lx < 0.15 X 1044erg/s) and high-Lx clusters (Lx > 1.8 X 1044erg/s). We find that the morphology-clustercentric relation prevails in the cluster environment although there is a brake near the cluster virial radius. The grand design arms comprise about 40% of the cluster spiral galaxies with a weak morphology-clustercentric radius relation for the arm classes, in the sense that flocculent galaxies tend to increase outward, regardless of the X-ray luminosity. From the cumulative radial distribution of cluster galaxies, we found that the low-Lx clusters are fully virialized while the high-Lx clusters are not.

        The polyhedrin is responsible to form polyhedra of nucleopolyhedrovirus(NPV) and highly conserved in most completely sequenced in lepidopteran NPVs. Previously, we have reported that the substitution of polyhedrin of Autographa californica NPV(AcNPV) with that of Spodoptera exigua NPV(SeNPV) or Bombyx mori NPV(BmNPV) result the change of polyhedra morphology. In this study, we investigated the influence of changed polyhedra morphology to the virulence of AcNPV. The recombinant AcNPVs were propagated in Spodoptera frugiperda clone 9, 21 cells and S. exigua larvae. Each collected recombinant polyhedra were used in bioassays using S. exigua larvae. The recombinant AcNPVs show that difference virulence according to the polyhedra morphologies. Internal and external morphological features of each recombinant AcNPV were also compared on the electron microscope. Our results suggest that the morphology of polyhedra influence the virulence of NPV and is well worth considering for the development viral insecticide.

        Vollenhovia emeryi chosenica (Wheeler) (Hymenoptera: Myrmicinae) is an ant species frequently found in forests. In nature, two phenotypically distinct forms are found e.g. long winged and short winged. Unlike other hymenopteran insects, the ant is unique in its mode of reproduction. In this species, queens are clonally reproduced from unfertilized eggs. On the other hand, workers develop from fertilized eggs. Strikingly, haploid males are reproduced from fertilized eggs after destroying the maternal half of the genome e.g. maternal genome loss (MGL) consequently only with the paternal half of the genome. We collected the ant colonies nationwide in 2011. In this study, we demonstrate that the ant is infected with Wolbachia, the bacterial reproductive manipulator in various insects. Interestingly, only the long winged morphs seem to be infected. Furthermore, most colonies are mulitple-infected except two colonies collected from Chuncheon and Mt. Deogyu. We will discuss potential interactions among the Wolbachia infection polymorphism and wing morphology, and evolution of clonal reproduction and MGL.

        Kenaf fibers, cellulose-based natural fibers, were used as precursor for preparing kenafbased carbon fibers. The effects of carbonization temperature (700℃ to 1100℃) and chemical pre-treatment (NaOH and NH4Cl) at various concentrations on the thermal change, chemical composition and fiber morphology of kenaf-based carbon fibers were investigated. Remarkable weight loss and longitudinal shrinkage were found to occur during the thermal conversion from kenaf precursor to kenaf-based carbon fiber, depending on the carbonization temperature. It was noted that the alkali pre-treatment of kenaf with NaOH played a role in reducing the weight loss and the longitudinal shrinkage and also in increasing the carbon content of kenaf-based carbon fibers. The number and size of the cells and the fiber diameter were reduced with increasing carbonization temperature. Morphological observations implied that the micrometer-sized cells were combined or fused and then re-organized with the neighboring cells during the carbonization process. By the pre-treatment of kenaf with 10 and 15 wt% NaOH solutions and the subsequent carbonization process, the inner cells completely disappeared through the transverse direction of the kenaf fiber, resulting in the fiber densification. It was noticeable that the alkali pre-treatment of the kenaf fibers prior to carbonization contributed to the forming of kenaf-based carbon fibers.

        Clinical arthritis is typically divided into rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and osteoarthritis (OA). Arthritis-induced muscle weakness is a major problem in aged people, leading to a disturbance of balance during the gait cycle and frequent falls. The purposes of the present study were to confirm fiber type-dependent expression of muscle atrophy markers induced by arthritis and to identify the relationship between clinical signs and expression of muscle atrophy markers. Mice were divided into four experimental groups as follows: (1) negative control (normal), (2) positive control (CFA+acetic acid), (3) RA group (CFA+acetic acid+type Ⅱ collagen), and (4) aging-induced OA group. DBA/1J mice (8 weeks of age) were injected with collagen (50 μg/kg), and physiological (body weight) and pathological (arthritis score and paw thickness) parameters were measured once per week. The gastrocnemius muscle from animals in each group was removed, and the expression of muscle atrophy markers (MAFbx and MuRF1) and myosin heavy chain isoforms were analyzed by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction. No significant change in body weight occurred between control groups and collagen-induced RA mice at week 10. However, bovine type Ⅱ collagen induced a dramatic increase in clinical score or paw thickness at week 10 (p<0.01). Concomitantly, the expression of the muscle atrophy marker MAFbx was upregulated in the RA and OA groups (p<0.01). A dramatic reduction in myosin heavy chain (MHC)-Iβ was seen in the gastrocnemius muscles from RA and OA mice, while only a slight decrease in MHC-Ⅱb was seen. These results suggest that muscle atrophy gene expression occurred in a fiber type-specific manner in both RA- and OA-induced mice. The present study suggests evidence regarding why different therapeutic interventions are required between RA and OA.
