Marine casuality causes not only loss of lives and ships, but also severs damages to marine environment and related economic activities such as fishing industry, sea farming, and tourist industry. Basically, the great effort should be made to prevent the occurrence of maritime accidents by any means. However, once accident has occurred, the salvage works should be done rapidly and properly based on theoretical and technical informations, which could minimize the risk during salvage operation and the overall damage from the maritime accidents. Generally, to calculate accurate hydrostatics of a stranded ship, a large amount of input data is needed. But, an availability and a reliability of input data cannot be guaranteed in most situations, and the adequate time required for preparing all input data is not allowed to perform the timely operations of salvage. In this paper, the development process of simple computer program for salvage operation using limited input data is introduced and its application example is presented. This program was developed to provide technical support for planning salvage operations in the grounding accident.

When the static load is applied to the ship's hull the deflection due to the bending moment from longitudinal direction has not been considered in the usual calculation of maximum bending moment. In fact, however, the deflection of ship's hull must be affected by the above-stated bending moment, and in this case the value of the maximum bending moment would be lessened in comparision with the result of usual calculation. In this paper, the author at first calculated the difference between the two values in case of rectangular barge, and suggested a practical criterion of longitudinal strength.

A vessel encountered heavy weather is face to two kinds of danger ; the danger of upset due to the lack of stability and the lack of the longitudinal strength. Generally a small vessel is face to the former and the large vessel to the latter. Most of people do not consider the danger of upset by the latter but the former. But many ships missed at sea, the exact causes being not known. This pper investigated and analyzed the causes of accidents. The result was that the lohgitudinal strength of the hull is not enough to cope with heavy weather, and the particular cautions are needed to handle a ship in heavy weather.
