It is very important to investigate the hull response of a fishing vessel in waves to ensure the safe navigation and fishing operation in rough seas by preserving excellent seakeeping qualities. For this purpose, we measured pitching and rolling response of three fishing vessels in seas using real seas experimental measuring system and analyzed the data by statisticawl and spectral analyzing method. We compared the measured results with theoretical results to give the validity of measuring system and experimental results. From the result we know that a good agreement between the experimental and theoretical results are shown except following seas. But there are little difference between both results in the other deirection too, which are caused by the effects of short crested waves of real seas.

In the field of research of seakeeping quality, much development has been made incent years using the method of calculation based on the strip theory. It is indispensable to grasp quantitatively the seaworthiness of a ship in order to draw correct design at initial stage and to perform proper operations at sea services. In this paper, the responses of three fishing vessels are calculated using statistical and spectral analyzing method to get the characteristics of the motion response. From the theoretical result we know that the significant values of the pitching and rolling motion can be signiicantly affected by not only the ship's tonnage but also the mean wave period in spite of the similar sea environment. So we can apply these expected results to the safe maneuvering and fishing operations in rough weather conditions by combining environmental circumstance with the stability condition of vessels.

For this purpose, we measured the response of fishing vessels in waves using real sea experimental measuring system. We analyze the experimental data by statistical method and spectral analysis to get the characteristics of the response of vessels which have different tonnage. In this real sea experiment, we use three stern trawlers which are the training ship in university. We know that the distribution of experimental response have Gauss distribution and Rayleigh distribution and smaller vessels have larger response.

It is general that large ships entering or leaving a port located in the East coast of Korean peninsular are often exposed athwart to swell while maneuvering in the vicinity of breakwater at harbor enterance or to prevailing wind inside the port in winter. Particulary, Many VLCCs laden with ore coal are calling at Pohang Port, on account of which it is likely that one of those VLCCs block the port if they were to run aground in fairway due to adverse circumstance of swell, prevailing winds or improper shiphandling. This accident may result in delay of delivery of raw material for Pohang Steel Mill which will bring about shortcomings of steel products for nationwide relevant industries causing national economic shock. Therefore, This study basically aims at establishment of certain criteria for safe unberthing of VLCC in this port to prevent such unexpected disaster because any VLLC is highly affected by external forces when in ballast condition. Computer simulations are unavoidable to fulfull this study successfuly and many simulations have been carried out repeatedly to find a model of safe unberthing under various unfavourable wind conditions. The "PC-based ship maneuvering simulator for training purpose" was used to perform numerous simulations at the least economic burden and to verify its availability that it can be used not only for training but also some other purposes. purposes.

Most of the ShipHandling Simulators of full-mission-bridge system need vast area to install and even PC-based maneuvering simulators are often equipped with Steering Wheel or Engine Telegraphe etc. of data input interface, which necessarily makes the user face with excessive financial burden. These have been one of the obstacles for the officers, captains, pilots and students in access to maneuvering simulation whenever they want to try it in advance prior to actual ship maneuvering. Subsequently, all the officers and captains come to have little chances to train themselves until they arualified as a pilot after a long period of time of realship maneuvering practice on board, which means they have to control they have to control their own ship at sea without clear understanding on her maneuverability when they are forced to do it on the way. And these lack of capability for maneuvering have used so often to result in marine casualties of collision with other ships or pier facilities while maneuvering in harbor. To prevent those accidents by means of enhancing their maneuvering ability, PC-based DeskTop Simulator that allows anyong to access readily at anytime is needed and in conformation to such demand this simulator has been developed. The Software this simulator written in Turbo Pascal Ver. 5.0 has adopted MMG mathmatical model theoretically in part and also it was designed to make it possible that all numeric data inputs and outputs with graphic presentation for maneuvering operation be carried out just only with keyboard and monitor console. With the Simulation software, all the officers, captains, pilots and even students who has a proper computer at hand are expected to be able to make an attempt to simulate the maneuvering of their ownship or any other types of them at any port in which they want to do it.

The motion of a small boat in seas is affected in relatively higher degrees than the case of a larger ship by the specific characteristics of sea waves, i.e., the wave length and height. Ship's motion caused by sea waves is a matter of special importance to small fishing boats, because they carry out fishing job in rough seas frequently. This is an experimental study on the rolling and pitching motions of full scale ship. In the experiment, the ship's motions were measured for head, how, beam, quarter and following seas. The experiment were carried out on board the training ship Pusan 404(160 GT) in the adjacent waters off NAM HYENG JAE DO on Dec. 13th 1994. The sea condition during the measurements was that wave height 2.5m, no swell and the wind velocity of 12 m/sec. Some statistic considerations were given to the observed data by the series analysis methods and discussed in this paper.

In marine transportation of bulk cargoes such as crude oil. ore, coal etc., a lot of full form ship which have poor manoeuvrability were presented in many countries. Since ship manoeuvrability depends upon many parameters namely hydrodynamic derivatives, interference factors etc., as external forces, it is of great importance that we investigate these values of parameters on analysis of manoeuvrability. In this paper, we investigated and analyzed interaction coefficients among hull-propeller-rudder for a full form ship by captive model test in circulating water channel, and then compared with experimental results by PMM test. A tanker model ship which has 0.83 as block coefficient and MMG mathematical models were used in this experiment. Almost same tendencies were found in qualitative analysis, even though more serial experiments were demanded in quantitative analysis.

Assessment of the safety of ship's transit in the narrow channel consist of the maneuvering safety determined by the chance of running aground, the maneuvering difficulty determined by ship's workload and master's subjective evaluation. To examine the relation between master's subjective evaluation and maneuvering safety, this utilizes a real-time and full-mission shiphandling simulator in the Korea Marine Training & Research Institutes(KMTRI). The vessel chosen was 60,000-ton, Panamax-type ship. The findings regarding master's subjective evaluation were as follows: -Relation between master's subjective evaluation and common logarithms of stranding probability is linear. -Stranding probability with more than 0.001 is master's subjective evaluation with more than 5.

In the present trends at which vessels would be supersizedly designed for adapting special cargoes in order for effective controls of logistics in marine transportation, it brings poor manoeuvrability of ships and makes environmental or economical loss seriously due to accidents of a large scale at sea. International Maritime Organization adopted manoeuvring standards and also recommended manoeuvring booklets for ship operators recently. We attempted to find variation of hydrodynamic derivatives when a bare hull was fitted with propeller and rudder, or propeller only by captive model test in the circulating water channel. On comparing experimental results with theoretical values derived from equations, almost same tenden-cies were found at hull-propeller-rudder and hull-propeller situations. Interactions with rudder displayed well at large drift angles.

This paper was a part of the risk management in planning a channel. It utilized Korea Marine Training & Research Institutes(KMTRI) which Houses a real-time, full-mission shiphandling simulator to examine the safety of the ship's transit in the planned channel of Asan port. 6 competent Captains participated in this study. The vessel modelled was a 60,000-ton ship. The two variables(factors) examined were environ-mental conditions such as flood-and-ebb current condition and day-and-night condition. The two variables were combined to produce four experimental conditions. To evaluate the safety of the environmental conditions, two categories of performance measures were analyzed. They were vessel's proximity to channel boundary and vessel controalbility. The findings regar-ding the effects of environmental conditions were as follows : - Closest Point of Approach(CPA) to channel boundary was enough for 60,000-ton ship to transit th-rough the channel with 99.999% confidence level. - Closest Point of Approach(CPA) to channel boundary further was under against-current condition than under with-current condition. -Vessel controlability was better under against-current condition than under with-current condition. -Vessel controlability was better under inbound transit than under outbound transit.

Handling performance of a vessel is greatly related with her steering characteristics which consist of two kinds of motion characteristics ; namely course stability and turning ability. The correct prediction of the qualities, especially the steering characteristics is as much important in ship handling as in ship design. It is the purpose of this paper to provide ships handlers better understanding of steering characteristics and then to help them in safe controlling and maneuvering of vessels presenting distinct inherent steering characteristic difference that lies between a fine-form vessel and full-form vessel. The authors calculated dynamic course stabilities of two kinds of ideal models, one of which represents a fine-form ship and the other a full-form ship, based on hydrodynamic data of forces and moments obtained by model tests in maneuvering tanks. The result of calculations indicated that a ship of full-form configuration has inhernet course instability. Though significant nonlinearties affect ship montions in maneuvers, application of linear theory is sufficient for prediction of the maneuvering characteristics of vessels on calm waters for handling reference.

In general, marine casualities take palace by the composite action of three elements such as waterway condition, vessel condition and man condition. One of the important characteristics of most marie casualties for small cargo vessels in maritime transportation of near-coastal and greater-coasting seas in that the same kind of casualities take place repeatedly in spite of the apprent causes, Because, it takes much time and effort for seamen to master waterway, vessel or operatin technique only to the practical and sensible level. In these days, with the development of our economy, our shiypping industry has grown and therefore the demand of marine officers has increased. This economic growth brought about undesirable situation like the evasion of seamen and frequent casualities of Korea vessels. These marine casualities are being caused mainly by the unskilfulness of operating technique as well as the bad waterway condition and ship's installation condition. Therefore, I conclude, in this paper, that the most efficient and economic preventing measures of marine casualities are seeking causes and removing them in advance under the close coperation system among all concerned parties.

The submarine played an active part in military operation during the last of nineteenth century. Today, as an aid to science and technology and technology m the submarine is being utilized in the fields of deep sea investigation and sight-seeing as well as military activities. When the stability and the maneuverability of a submarine is studied, the problems arise on the vertical plane as well as the horizontal plane. However, the horizontal plane has been dealt with in the study of surface vessels. The author attempts to look into the hydrodynamic directional stability at high speeds (above 10knots) on the vertical plane, and to clarify the submarine's depth-rate as related to the factors that affect it : the distance from the center of buoyancy to the center of gravity, the speed of the submarine, and the position and the area ratio of hydroplane. In this study, the author considered the two groups of dimensionless derivatives of submarine. It is confirmed that the depth-rate of a submarine is decreased when the length, of BG is increased under the continuous submerging status. But the depth-rate is increased when the area ratio of hydroplane is enlarged. It is also confirmed that a submarine has only one critical speed in accordance with the shape of its hull, but unconcerned with its speeds.

When a ship is sailing on the sea, she has the six-degrees of freedom of motion. It means that she meets a lot of dangerous situations. Especially, when the VLCC is travelling in irregular sea, the slamming, the deck-wetness and the propeller racing are occured with the sea state she is on. These are the representative steps that a heave-to and a scudding are used for a ship building , but for a predominance in both. The author intends to clarify this problem theoretically. The methods of statistical calculation are based with the ITTC spectral formulation and with the assumption that the wave height histogram follows the Rayleigh distribution. In this study, the author gives an attention on the relative bow motion to a wave in the irregular sea. It is verified that the relative diplacement at the bow to sea level in the following sea is less than that in the head sea. It is confirmed that, therefore, one have to sail with scudding when he is threatened to heave-to at a rough sea. But he must bear the propeller racing in mind in the cases.

Marine casualities in the high sea are mainly classified into the breakage of hull and capsize , of which the latter occurs frequently to a small craft and container vessels by extreme rolling. The aim of this study is to develop shiphandling techniques for the prevention of ship's large rolling by way of evaluating dangerous degree of rolling in heavy weather. In this study, rolling motion is analized by using statistical method as follow : (1) 8 sample ships is presented for calculation. (2) Analized sea state are Beaufort scale 7 and 10 (wind velocity 30kts and 50kts respectively) and significant wave height is put as 5.2m and 11.2m. (3) The formula recommended by International Towing Tank Conference (ITTC) is used to calculated the wave spectrum. The results of this study are as follow : The results of this study are as follow : (1) Most of the vessels with beam of 20 meters or less was found to be capized in the waves abeam under the sea condition of Bearfort scale7(30kts). (2) For the vessels range 20m to 30m was found safe under the sea conditions of Bearfort scale 7(30kts) and imminent danger under the sea condition of Beaufort scale 11(50kts). (3) It is proved that any vessel could be capsized by heavy rolling regardless of vessel's size whenever the motion is synchronized with waves abeam. This study concludes that the navigator, especially at night , must anticipate the exact wave direction, referring to the wether report and coastaline, not to lay the vessel in the serial wave abeam.
