The assesment of the safety of ship's transit in a curved narrow channel consists of the maneuvering safety determined by the chance of running aground, the maneuvering difficulty determined by ship's workload, and shiphandler's subjective evaluation. In this study, to examine the correlation between shiphandler's subjective evaluation and the maneuvering safety, the real-time and full-mission shiphandling simulator in the Korea Marine Training & Research Institute(KMTRI) was utilized. On the conning bridge of the shiphandling simulator, 50 experienced masters have conducted the modeled vessel of 60, 000 deadweight tonnage along the designed channel under 3 different environmental conditions. It was possible to assess and analyze theoretically the correlation between the shiphandler's subjective evaluation and maneuvering difficulty under each environmental condition by quantifying the data obtained from the tests. The results are as follows: ① As the degree of maneuvering difficulty increases, the shiphandler's subjective evaluation increases in the designed channel under the designed environmental condition. ② In the straight area, not the bend of the designed channel, maneuvering difficulty increases sharply under the environmental condition of current and wind coming from the stern.

On this paper, the traditional methods for the measurement of ship's maneuverabilities during the sea-trial of newly built ship are summarized and new methods for the same measurement using Integrated Navigation System and GPS are introduced. After various sea-trials of training ship "HANNARA" which are equipped with modern INS and GPS system, the results are compared and analysed. The purpose of this paper is to present more accurate methods of measurement of ship's maneuverabilities during sea-trial using INS and GPS which are gradually becoming the basic navigational equipments on many newly constructed vessels.d vessels.

Vessles in the world merchant fleet generally operate in either liner or bulk trade. The supply and the demand trend of general cargo ship are both on the ebb, however, those trend of tankers and containers are in slight ascension. Oil tankers are so far the largest single vessel type in the world fleet and the tanker market is often cited as a textbook example of perfect competition. Some shipping statistics in recent years show that there has been a radical fluctuation in spot charter rate under easy charterer's market. This implys that the proper scheduling of tankers under spot market fluctuation has the great potential of improving the owner's profit and economic performance of shipping. This paper aims at developing the TS-DSS(Decision Support System for Tanker Scheduling) in the context of the importance of scheduling decisions. The TS-DSS is defined as the DSS based on the optimization models for tanker scheduling. The system has been developed through the life cycle of systems analysis, design, and implementation to be user-friendly system. The performance of the system has been tested and examined by using the data edited under several tanker scheduling scenarios and thereby the effectiveness of TS-DSS is validated satifactorily. The authors conclude the paper with the comments on the need of appropriate support environment such as data-based DSS and network system for succesful implementation of the TS-DSS.

The use of high tensile steel plates is increasing in the fabrication of ship and offshore structures. The main portion of ship structure is usually composed of stiffened plates. In these structures, plate buckling is one of the most important design criteria and buckling load may usually be obtained as an eigenvalue solution of the governing equations for the plate. To use the high tensile steel plate effectively, its thickness may become thin so that the occurrence of buckling is inevitable and design allowing plate buckling may be necessary. When the panel elastic buckling is allowed, it is necessary to get precise understandings about the post-buckling behaviour of thin plates. It is well known that a thin flat plate undergoes secondary buckling after initial buckling took place and the deflection of the initial buckling mode was developed. From this point of view, this paper discusses the post-buckling behaviour of thin plates under thrust including the secondary buckling phenomenon. Series of elastic large deflection analyses were performed on rectangular plates with aspect ratio 3.6 using the analytical method and the FEM.

Waterfront redevelopment is an element in the process of inner-city regeneration now widespread in many ports of the world. Academic interest in the processes involved has yielded a literature biased towards specific locations rather than towards the analysis of processes and issues. The redevelopment of urban waterfronts does not, of course, occur exclusively in port cities but is found as a continuous process in most places where settlement and water are juxtaposed, whether or not commercial port activity is or was present. Port cities, however, as a result of the concentration and juxtaposition of urban and maritime influences, generally present the major issues involved in waterfront redevelopment most clearly. In this context, the general aim is to explore Korean dimensions of waterfront redevelopment in a range of port cities in a context of inner-urban renewal; and a specific objective is to examine the views of decision-makers in Korean port cities on the processes involved by a questionnaire method. The focus is on comparative strategies, and in particular upon the factors affecting the balance between social goals and commercial interests. To test the response of four categories of decision-makers in Korean port cities on a number of issues perceived as underpinning the processes involved in waterfront redevelopment, four catergories of respondents-port authority representatives(PO), urban planners(UP), port specialists(PS) and city-government official(GO)-were asked to fill in a questionnaire form. In three out of ten cases, the overall result broadly confirmed the a priori expectation; in six cases the confirmation was partial; and in one other the view of respondent was generally contrary to those anticipated. In many, but by no means all, cases there was substantial agreement between the four categories of respondents, but the range of scores was generally much wider than expected.

The defects occurred in knitted fabrics have several types due to some trouble sources. In particular, the defects caused by knitting machine troubles give a serious damage to the whole webs. It is, therefore, necessary to discriminate the kind of defects. The method to discriminate the type and size of defects has been proposed, which is used a pair of narrow band eliminating spatial filters. This method is based upon an isotropic signal processing in time domain. This paper is to confirm that the proposed method can be useful in the discrimination of defects, having analyzed in spatial frequency domain.

In this paper, The Fuzzy Logic Controller based on T-operators is designed. Some typical T-operators and their mathematical properties are studied. A generalized fuzzy inference model is proposed by introducing the general notion of T-operators into the conventional one which is based only on the Min and Max operators. Fuzzy Logic Control algorithms based on the T-operators are suggested. Then, by computer simulations, the effect of various T-operators on the performance of the fuzzy logic controller are studied. The purpose of these simulation studies were to observe the flexibility and system responses using the processed class of T-operators in the fuzzy inference mechanisms. This observation was made on parameters such as speed of reponses, steady-state behavior and non oscillatory responses.
