The amount of cargoes by cargo vessels has increased tremendously during the last decade due to the great growth of korea economy. But in spite of this trend, there is rarely the substantial analyzed on the operational status of coastal shipping. In this paper, the characteristics of seaborne cargo and traffic flow of coastal shipping surveyed in detail through the statistical and the origintain and destination (O.D) analysis. Also, the basic ship's tonnage of coastal shipping representing the minimum tonnage which is capable of carrying the given seaborne cargo is suggested through the computer simulation using the data of 1985 year. The results are as follows; 1) the about 80% of total coastal traffic volume is going in/out to the port of Incheon, Busan, Pohang, Samil, Bukpyung, Mukho, Samchuk, and Jeju. 2) The main cargo items such as oil, iron material, cement, anthracite grain, fertilizer, other ore are reached to the about 70% of total amount of coastal trade. 3) ship's tonnage going in/out to the port of Bukpyiung, Busan, Pohang is increasing linearly year by year, and the amount of oil, iron material, cement, anthracite, grain, fertilizer, other ore are also increasing in linear pattern. 4) As a result of simulation, the optimum (basic) ship's tonnage.

Since the middle of 1950's, containerization has been rapidly spread over the world in virtue of great merits providing to interensts, and the fundamental changes in port management and prot operations are resulted. As the container terminal is a complex system which is consisted of various subsystems, the treatment for improving the productivity is required in a comprehensive fashion, both in each of its parts and as an integrated system. This paper aims to make an intensive analysis of the Busan Container Terminal system, especially focusing on its subsystems such as ship operation system, storage system and transfer system. First of all, the intrinsic capacity of various subsystems is calculated and it is checked whether the current operation is being performed effectively through the formal analysis. Secondly, the suggestion is presented to improve the operation by considering the throughput that the port of Busan will have to accept in the near future. The results are as follows; 1) As the inefficiency is due to the imbalance between various subsystems at Busan terminal, transfer equipment level must be up to 31% for straddle carrier and 67% transfer crane above all. 2) The yard capacity must be increased by reducing the free dwell time of containers in order to accept the traffic volume smoothly in the near future. 3) The better way to reduce the port congestion is to change berthing rule from the FIFP to the Pre-allocated system by considering the ship arrival pattern.

In this paper, a synthetic method for evaluating the seakeeping performance of a ship in waves is studied. For the prediction and evaluation of irregular phenomena to be correlated each other, the multi-dimensional Rayleigh's joint probability density function and the cumulative distribution function are approximated. According to this approximated function, it is able to calculate easily the occurrence probability of the factors on seakeeping performance. We proposed an evaluation method and an index to be defined by the seakeeping performance reliability, that is considered as the dangerousness and the relative dangerousness of the factors on seakeeping performance in waves. The use of this method aid index will be effective to install the sensors which are necessary to evaluate the states of ships at sea. Some example of the calculations by this method for 175m length single screw container ship equipped with diesel engine are also presented.

Nowadays natural resources on shore have been almost exhausted all over the world and mankind is beginning searching for unexploited resources on the bed of deep-sea floor. In exploring mineral resources and etc. in the ground of sea-bed, a sumbersible craft is one of the most important tools. These days, the stage of the technique of building and operating an exploring submersible craft is almost alike that of building and operating an airplane in the first years of the nineteen-twenties. At the present time, the problems arising in building and operating a submersible craft can be divided into four parts as follows; 1. How to build a hull that can bear high pressure under deep sea level. 2. How to decide the necessary facilities to be put on it. 3. How to decide the scope of stabilities and maneuvering characteristics of it. 4. On what sea conditions, the devices of launching and recovering it should be designed on the mother-ship. In this paper treating one of the third problems the author made a mathematic formula that can be useful in deciding the scope of dynamic course stability on the vertical plane and actually calculated the onset speed of pitch instability of an exploring craft. With the above mentioned calculations the author demonstrated that the value of Zg and the speed of a submerged craft are the most important factors in decideing the scope of dynamic stability on the vertical plane.

In cold season, ice accretion on ship, drift ice, NW winter monsoon, developed extratropical cyclones and associated cold fronts, in warm season, tropical cyclones and dense sea fogs, are encountered very frequently in the North Pacific, especially in the northwest part of it. The two areas, namely, the northwest part of the North Pacific and Burmuda Triangle in the North Atlantic are generally known as most dangerous areas in the world because its high incidence of sea cascualities. In recent years, the small fisherboats operating in the northern seas were frequently sunk in a group as they encountered ice accretion or drift ice. And ocean going vessels were also sunk frequently due to strong winds and very high seas in winter monsoon or developed cyclones and cold fronts. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the real state of heavy weather conditions such as ice accretion on ship drift, ice, typhoons and sea fogs, and also to analyse the effect of these heavy weather phenomena on the vessels at sea, thus helping mariners operate in such heavy weather conditions.
