The tedious work, connected to the traditional computation of altitudes and azimuths and the plotting of the position lines, has been a severe objection to celestial fixes. But recently computers have become to be used generally for computations of altitudes and aximuths and the computing objection seems to be practically overruled. Now it seems appropriate to concentrate on other problems which are the procedure of improving accuracy of ship's position and the design of a general computing procedure to determine the coordinates of the optimally estimated ship's position. In this paper, such procedures as an application of Kalman filter and the results of the Digital simulation conducted under various noise conditiions are presented. The positions estimated by Kalman filter are compared with the running fixes and the most probable positions obtained from a single position line, and it is confirmed that the resutls of the proposed method is evidently accurate than others.

The NAVSTAR/GPS is a satellite-based navigation system that will provide extremely accurate three-dimensional position and velocity information to users anywhere on or near the earth. This system has been studied primarly for military use and thus the results of studies are seldom obtainable for civilian use up to date. Expecting this system to be opened to civilian use in the future, this paper aims to the collection of basic data of the PN phase modulated communication system adopted in the GPS system by computer simulation. The results of studies are as follows; 1) The PN phase modulation of the speed of 106b/s can be simulated by Fourier summation, the spectrum region which can be restricted is in the region of 0.5-1.5 MHz and spectrum number required is over than 270. 2) By computer simulation, it is verified that optimum r.f filter bandwidth is about 0.3 MHz for the case of 106b/s PN codes phase modulated in 1.575GHz carrier. 3) In case that PN rate to data rate is between 10 and 100, the allowable minimum SNR to demodulate data signal correctly by optimum LPF is about 0.3. It is also verified that the larger the frequency ratio of PN code to the data code, the lower the allowable minimum SNR required.

The attempt of this paper is to examine the basic theory on the analysis of the effect of a shading coil fitted to an electromagnetic contactor, and to compare experimentally the attracting force of an AC electromagnetic contactor with that of a DC electromagnetic contactor, with varying the airgap length. Equations are also proposed for calculating the AC and DC attracting force per unit consumption wattage by using the circuit constants measured from the experiment, and these calculated attracting forces are compared with those actulally measured, and then, the experimental contactor is examined in the view of its design. The calculated attracting forces are appeared to coincide well with the measured ones and the experimental contactor fitted with shading coil is revealed not so well designed for reducing the fluctuation of the attracting force.

This paper deals with a mathematical model which explains process of aquisition or skillfulness of human. Especially, in the case of determinating a ship's position, a degree of aquisitiion or skillfulness has a significant meaning in the view point of reliability of a data because it is closely connected with the position error. In this paper, the authors have obtained the following mathematical model, who analyzed quantitavely the data obtained by a process of measuring the horizontal sextant angles and extracted the factors or parameters affecting the process of aquisition or skillfulness of human. Namely, H=Me-iN M : the coefficiency which represent the degree of difficulty in measuring the object i : personal parameter N : the number of measurements

During the last decade the world had experienced oil crisis twice: the first one was the fourfold jump in oil prices in 1973 and 1974, the second one came in 1979 with 2.6 times price hike. The current crude oil prices stand around the level of 30 a barrel. The first reaction came quick, with reduced oil consumption and a general decline in economic activity. Furthermore, the second oil crisis has brought about tremendous and varied impacts upon the shipping industry, which is now undergoing an adaptation process to the changing environments. This article is divided into five chapters: chapter I is the introduction on the subject under examination; chapter II is devoted to the trends of the seaborne trade cargoes after the oil crisis; chapter III reveals the impact of the oil price hike on ships and their desion; chapter IV deals with the challenges shipping enterprises face in terms fo economic modus operandi and new international political environments; chapter V sets forth conclusion.
