The maritime education and training is executed in Asian countries according to The International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watch keeping for Seafarers(STCW). However, mainly basic training and education takes in maritime universities, because this convention is minimum requirements to become junior mariner. So, until now researches have not developed to the stage of discussing how maritime universities of advanced shipping countries should pursue the direction of education in the new eras. Korea and Japan as the leading shipping countries in Asia, need to take initiatives in building a new education system in order to foster the next generation maritime expert. To enhance the professional abilities of maritime technologists in the new era, element design of science and technology relating to maritime issues and a new education system based on an amalgamation of maritime education and scientific and technological education were discussed.
Fiber reinforced plastics (FRP) have been widely used because of their high specific strength, high specific stiffness and etc. Although these kinds of FRP have various merits in applications, it has been had one of the complicated problems to manufacture their wooden mold. For these reasons, the simple methods to manufacture the mold required in the FRP industries. To improve these kinds of problems, the molding system using composite materials was developed. By this new manufacturing techniques and high functional FRP composite mold was built. Comparing with wooden mold, the process efficiencies of frame manufacturing process and inner mold manufacturing process were improved approximately 40% and 70%, respectively.
In the sea various methods have been conducted to capture wave energy which include the use of pendulums, pneumatic devices, etc. Floating devices, such as a cavity resonance device take advantages of both the water motion and the wave induced motions of the floating body itself. The wave energy converter is known commercially as the WAGB(Wave Activated Generator Buoy) and is used in some commercially available buoys to power navigation aids such as lights and horns. This wave energy converter consists of a circular flotation body which contains a vertical water column that has free communication with the sea. A theoretical analysis of this power generated by a pneumatic type wave energy converter is performed and the results obtained from the analysis are used for a real wave energy converter buoy. This paper is shown to have an optimum value for which maximum power is obtained at a given resonant wave period Also, the length of the internal water column corresponds to that of the water mass in the water column. If designed properly, wave energy converter can take advantage not only of the cavity resonance, but also qf the heaving motion of the buoy. Finally, simulation is performed with a LabVIEW program and the simulation results are applied to a wave energy simulator for modifying design data for a wave energy converter.
Marine accidents related to the tug-barges are frequent recently, such as oil spill caused by collision between oil tankers and tug-barges. There are many causes of these accidents, but poor working condition of operators takes up a considerable part of most causes. That is, the danger of accidents caused by fatigue accumulation exists in tug-barges of less than 200 gross tonnage engaged on near-coastal voyages or short shipping, because of the long-distance navigational watch by only one master. This paper aims to deduce problems of human element part out of the plan of sqfe navigation, and to propose legal amendments for preventing marine accidents by tug-barges.
We have proposed and demonstrated an gas-flow sensor using optical fiber bragg grating(FEG). The flow sensor has no electronics and no mechanical parts in its sensing part and the structure is th11s simple and immune to electromagnetic interference(EMI). The FEG sensor was consisted qf the sensing element and a coil heater. The metal coil was used to supply the current to the FEG. While some currents supply to the coil, the refractive index of the FEG under the coil is changed and thus the wavelength shift of fiber optic sensor was induced In this work, the wavelength shift according to flow-rate was experimentally studied and was used to evaluate the gas flow-rate in a gas tube. As a result, it was possible to measure the flow-rate in a linear range from 5 to 20l/min with a resolution of approximately 1l/min at the applied currents of 100 mA and 120 mA. The measured sensitivities were 15.3 pm/l/min for 100 mA and 20.2 pm/l/min for 120 mA.
Sensing performances of evanescent field absorption (EFA) hetero-core fiber sensor has been presented based on EFA by changing the length and the core diameter of the single mode fiber. Experimental results have demonstrated a good feature in their relationship between the length and the core diameter of the single mode fiber. The sensor consists of 2 fiber optics which have the same cladding diameter of 125μm However one fiber optic used is single mode and has varying core diameter ranging from 3.3 to 5.6μm. The other fiber is multimode type and has a thicker fixed core diameter of 62.5μm. The 2 fiber optics are thermally spliced together. Experiments conducted to measure the resonance wavelength were carried out over a range of refractive index, to find the optimum sensing length Experiments show that core diameter of the single mode fiber and sensing length offects the linearity and sensitivity.
Very often has it happened that Korean flag ships were detained due to the defect of the ship itself at the port they are entering into by the system of Port State Control(PSC). It does matter because the high detention ratio of Korean ships causes to increase the survey ratio of Korean ships by PSC countries, which increases overall operating costs of Korean shipping companies. Therefore Korean government should take tougher action on the detention of Korean ships. The study uses 946 inspections to formulate the model of identifying PSC-weak ships by logistic regression analysis.
In this paper, we deal with an allocation model of vertical type container yard for minimizing the total ATC (Automated Transfer Crane) working time and the equivalence of ATC working load in each block on automated container terminal. Firstly, a layout of automated container terminal yard is shown The characteristic of equipment which work in the terminal and its basic assumption are given Next, an allocation model which concerns with minimizing the total working time and the equivalence of working load is proposed for effectiveness of ATC working in automated container terminal. Also, a weight values on critical function are suggested to adjust the critical values by evaluating the obtained allocation plan. For ATC allocation algorithm, we suggest a simple repeat algorithm for on-line terminal operation.
