A marine flapped rudder is designed to improve the effective lift generated by the rudder; this also improves the maneuverability of the ship. The flap is a high lift device installed at the trailing edge of the rudder to augment lift. In this paper, the characteristics of a thick flapped rudder are analyzed at a low Reynolds number with various ratios of flap chord length to total chord length and various aspect ratios, based on the computational fluid dynamics technique. The performance of the rudder with respect to lift, drag, and center of pressure are investigated, and the efficient ratio of flap chord length to total chord length and improved aspect ratio are determined. Ed: highlight – or ‘superior’. As a case study, the flow on the flapped rudder of an NACA0021 section shape in free stream condition is simulated. The standard k-epsilon turbulence model is used to model the flow around the flapped rudder. The results indicate that the efficient ratio of the flap chord length to total chord length and aspect ratio are 0.3 and 1.4, respectively.

This study represents a fundamental research for a passenger-ship escape guidance system that is a ship-borne agent, and it is for the support of escape decision-making by providing accurate maritime safety information in real time. We conducted a passenger escaping experiment on a training ship, SAEYUDAL, using the situation-aware escape guidance system, which has been developed for on-board application based on products for buildings. It is shown that the system contributes to the shortening of the escape duration and the dispersion of the escaping persons by generating and guiding the safe escape routes which dangerous areas are considered. From the experiment on ship's heeling condition, it is revealed that the heeling angle is linearly related to the escape duration. Therefore, this study shows that the shortening of the escape duration enables a safe and rapid mustering that is the most important process under emergency and appropriate incident responses to minimize loss of lives.

Vessel Traffic Services (VTS) textbooks should adhere as closely as possible to the Standard Marine Communication Phrases (SMCP) set by the International Maritime Organization (IMO). The purpose of the present paper is to examine English linguistic features in VTS textbooks used in China and Korea in comparison with the SMCP in order to determine the degree to which these textbooks adopt and utilize the SMCP. Textbooks used by VTS operators in China and Korea and the SMCP were separately edited and compiled into corpora. In analyzing the data, both quantitative and qualitative approaches were adopted. Software WordSmith 5.0 was utilized to retrieve statistical information and concordance samples. The findings show that the lexico-grammatical patterns in the Chinese and Korean VTS textbooks generally deviate from the formulas of SMCP. The results of the study are expected to help in the design of VTS textbooks and to standardize Maritime English.

A nearshore current or a wave-induced current is an important phenomenon in a nearshore zone, which is composed of longshore, cross-shore, and rip currents. The nearshore current is closely related to the occurrence of coastal accidents by beachgoers. A considerable number of coastal accidents by beachgoers involving the rip current have been reported at Jungmun Beach. However, in studies and observations of the nearshore current of Jungmun Beach, understanding of the rip current pattern remains unclear. In this study, a scientific approach is taken to understand the nearshore current and the rip current patterns at Jungmun Beach by numerical computation for year of 2015. From results of numerical computation, the occurrence and spatial characteristics of the rip current, and the similarities between the rip current and incident wave conditions are analyzed. The primary results of this study reveal that the rip currents are frequently generated at Jungmun Beach, especially in the western parts of the beach, and that the rip currents often occur with a wave breaking height of around 0.5 ~ 0.7 m, a wave period of around 6 ~ 8 seconds, and a breaking angle of around 0 ~ 15 degrees.

Despite the remarkable continual growth of the world cruise industry, studies have yet to be attempted on many revenue management problems in cruise operations. This paper suggests two schemes that can be easily applied to cruise revenue management: optimal dual pricing and passenger safety level. In optimal dual pricing, a pair of higher and lower prices is applied to cabin reservation through market segmentation. This scheme can be executed with a linear price-response function for the current unreserved cabins. A cruise line could benefit from this scheme to maximize reservation revenue while attaining full occupancy. The dual pricing scheme is also devised to produce only integer demands to suit real management practices. The life boat capacity is an additional service capacity unique to the cruise industry, catering to passengers’ safety. The concept of passenger safety level is defined and computed for any passenger life boat capacity of a cruise ship. It can be used to evaluate the passenger safety of a cruise ship in operation, as well as to determine the number of life boat seats required for a new cruise ship. Hypothetical examples are used to illustrate the operation of these two schemes.

This paper aims to investigate the time-varying systematic risk of the stocks of Korean logistics firms. For this purpose, the period from January 1991 to October 2016 was examined with respect to 21 logistics companies that are listed on the Korea Exchange. The systematic risk of the logistics stocks is measured in terms of the Capital Asset Pricing Model (CAPM) beta for which the sensitivity of a stock is compared to the return changes of the whole market. Overall, the betas of the stocks of the Korean logistics companies are significantly lower than those of the market unity; however, it was revealed that the logistics betas are not constant, but are actually time-varying according to different economic regimes, which is consistent with the previous empirical findings. This finding is robust across different measurements of the logistics betas. In addition, the impact of macroeconomic factors on the logistics betas was examined. The present study shows that the logistics betas are positively associated with foreign exchange-rate changes
