Ship system can be divided into four sub-systems: hull, propeller, main engine and operation system which severely affect the characteristics of a ship. In determining ship speed in waves, two factors are considered the involuntary speed loss due to added resistance caused by wind and waves, and the voluntary speed loss by command of operation system to prevent severe ship motions. In this paper, the main function of four sub-system is analyzed for input/output relations and propulsive coefficient and a useful method to predict involuntary speed loss of a ship is presented. Two calculated examples for a high speed container ship and a passenger ship with single screw and diesel engine are given.

In this paper, ferrite-rubber composite has been studied in order to apply to RF-A-PF in a super wideband electromagnetic absorber in RF-A-PF type, which can be used for a general purpose anechoic chamber. Nix - Mn0.1 - Zn(1-x-0.1)ㆍFe2O4 ferrite powder has been fabricated, then, using this, 〔Nix - Mn0.1 - Zn(1-x-0.1)ㆍFe2O4〕-Rubber composite for RF-layer in the RF-A-PF type absorber has been fabricated and it's characteristics have been analyzed. As a result, it has been clearly shown that the 〔Nix - Mn0.1 - Zn(1-x-0.1)ㆍFe2O4〕-Rubber composite has excellent electromagnetic wave absorbing properties.

With a rapid progress in electronic industry we enjoy various conveniences of life. As many kinds of information equipments are supplied even to most of individuals as to be called an information society, we are exchanging much information with one another surprisingly. Consequently the occupation density of microwave frequency band is highly increased, and electromagnetic environment is getting more seriously bad. It often gives fatal blow to even human life and thus becomes serious social problems. Electromagnetic wave absorbers for anechoic chamber are needed to broaden the effective frequency bandwidth, reduce the thickness, and decrease the weight. There are various absorbers proposed for the above conditions, but they could not decisively solve it the alone requirements. The Electromagnetic wave absorber made by a conventional ferrite tile has, for example, broadened the useful frequency bandwidth by the way of forming air layer(practically use urethane foam, etc.) on the ferrite tile. Therefore, an air layer is formed between a reflection plate and a sintered Ni-Zn ferrite tile of 7 mm in thickness, which has reflectivity less than -20 dB from 30 MHz to 400 MHz in bandwidth. Accordingly, in this paper, a broadened electromagnetic wave absorber are designed, which has the reflection characteristics less than -20 dB from 30 MHz to 6,000 MHz in the bandwidth. Then we achieved the goal by design the inserting square Ferrite Cylinders with the thickness less than 17.5 mm on existing grid type Ferrite absorber. The purpose of this research is on the development of very wide-band electromagnetic absorber for a universal anechoic chamber for measuring radiated electromagnetic wave or immunity of electronic equipments, GTEM-cell, wall material for preventing TV ghost, etc.

The production process of the compound-curved hull plates includes hull design, definition, fairing, modeling, lofting, cutting, and forming in sequence. Traditional fabrication methods and shop environment caused low level to productivity in medium and small sized shipyards. The most effective solution to solve those problems is to rationalize the layout of facilities. For the well-balanced development of domestic shipbuilding industry, it is urgently required to reduce the gap between modernized large sized shipyards and traditional small and medium sized shipyards in production technologies and efficiencies. For the efficient and accurate hull piece forming, all information from design to forming should be clarified and organized in a systematic manner. Thus, management of the information plays an important role in the computerized and automated of hull piece forming. The object of this paper is to survey the status of the field, to find out the feasibility and to introduce a draft of hull piece fabrication line for small and medium sized shipyards. The development of required system follows the object oriented technology to extend to simulation based system for carrying out physical product flow and facilities layout analysis. It is feasible to operate such a modernized facility for a group of small and medium shipyards who are unable to have each of their own facility because of its large amount of initial investment and insufficient work load.

With the advent of the 21th century, Korea surrounded by the three sides of the sea has been underlining the fact that it will become one of the strongest maritime powers near future as ever in the past. The study shows that in order to build up Korea as a powerful maritime country, not only should we urge its government to take more in-depth political interest in the field of the shipping industry, but the effective training and the managing program for sea-farers employing in th forefront of the shipping business(as the centric panel of the competent merchant marine officers) also have to be taken into a sufficient consideration. According to the large scale, higher speed and automatization of vessels, a number of seamen who have so well-workable brain as to dexterously operate the up-dated scientific equipments have come into be demanded. This study therefore has not only suggested that an improvement for the system of the education for merchant marine officers and the effective scheme of the management on them, but especially underlined the problems of seamen' and their families' economic and social securities as well.

For the purpose of analyzing the influence of the recent environmental changes of container logistics system in container terminal, the simulation model of container logistics system on BCTOC is developed in this paper. The simulation model is accomplished by the AweSim simulation language, and the several data which have been used in simulation gained through spot research and basic statistic analysis using the first half of 1998 electronic data in BCTOC. The results of this study are as follows; (1) In the case of BCTOC, the decreasing of container volumes is observed during the first half of 1998 compare with that of 1997. (2) In the container handling service market, the monopolistic market system in the past rapidly diverts to the competition market system from now. (3) From the simulation results, the improving of container logistics system is observed. (4) Because of these results, BCTOC will come to strengthen customer service and competitive power through starting On-Dock service system and operating the team of customer management in the long term.

Although many studies on modelling of port competitive situation have been conducted, both theoretical frame and methodology are still very weak. In this study, therefore, a new algorithm called ESD (Extensional System Dynamics) for the evaluation of port competition was presented, and applied to simulate port systems in northeast asia. The detailed objectives of this paper are to develop Unit fort Model by using SD(System Dynamics) method; to develop Competitive Port Model by ESD method; to perform sensitivity analysis by altering parameters, and to propose port development strategies. For these the algorithm for the evaluation of part's competition was developed in two steps. Firstly, SD method was adopted to develop the Unit Port models, and secondly HFP(Hierarchical Fuzzy Process) method was introduced to expand previous SD method. The proposed models were then developed and applied to the five ports - Pusan, Kobe, Yokohama, Kaoshiung, Keelung - with real data on each ports, and several findings were derived. Firstly, the extraction of factors for Unit Port was accomplished by consultation of experts such as research worker, professor, research fellows related to harbor, and expert group, and finally, five factor groups - location, facility, service, cargo volumes, and port charge - were obtained. Secondly, system's structure consisting of feedback loop was found easily by location of representative and detailed factors on keyword network of STGB map. Using these keyword network, feedback loop was found. Thirdly, for the target year of 2003, the simulation for Pusan port revealed that liner's number would be increased from 829 ships to 1,450 ships and container cargo volumes increased from 4.56 million TEU to 7.74 million TEU. It also revealed that because of increased liners and container cargo volumes, length of berth should be expanded from 2,162m to 4,729m. This berth expansion was resulted in the decrease of congested ship's number from 97 to 11. It was also found that port's charge had a fluctuation. Results of simulation for Kobe, Yokohama, Kaoshiung, Keelung in northeast asia were also acquired. Finally, the inter port competition models developed by ESB method were used to simulate container cargo volumes for Pusan port. The results revealed that under competitive situation container cargo volume was smaller than non-competitive situation, which means Pusan port is lack of competitive power to other ports. Developed models in this study were then applied to estimate change of container cargo volumes in competitive relation by altering several parameters. And, the results were found to be very helpful for port mangers who are in charge of planning of port development.

Vessels chartering has contributed to developing Korean shipping industry over the past three decades. Vessels chartered by shipping companies have been employed in cross trades as well as in the Korean foreign trade to achieve their business strategy. Meanwhile, some problems such as speculation, sales-oriented expansion with poor margin, poor forecasting capacity, over excessive competition in cross trades among Korean owners, and lack of speciality in decision-making, have played adverse roles in promoting chartering business in Korea. There(ore, this paper aims to discuss motives for vessel chartering business and its significance in the Korean shipping industry and to identify problems in the business.
