Recently, due to the several factors such as the advent of very large vessels and high-speed vessels, and the increase of the maritime traffic density at sea, the obligation, responsibility and burden of marine officers on duty for the safety of navigation has been highly escalated. Under these situations, if the appropriate and correct navigational information is given to officers at real time by means of certain integrated information processing system, these obligation, burden and danger can be reduced. This paper deals with the study on the development of the Navigational Information Monitoring and Recording System that can give and record the integrated navigational information based on the personal computer system installed on board. To construct this system, the interface unit which changes different signal types of navigational equipments to NMEA 0183 signal format and the application software to show the visual navigational information were developed. In this study, the navigation system of T/S HANBADA in Korea Maritime University was used in order to construct the actual system that can be utilized in other ships, and also the performance test was carried out several times to examine the performance of the system developed. It was proved that all functions of the system as designed worked smoothly through the performance test. Also this system could be operated easily and conveniently by every user.

Concerns related to the safety of bulk carriers we, most of all, the increasing number of bulk carrier accidents which amount to 425 during last 20 years; half of them are totally lost. A number of bulk tarriers are still missing. Bulk carrier safety has become an international issue since 1995. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) embarked on the legislation as a countermeasure to the increasing number of the bulk carrier accidents. The IMO discussed in the safety of bulk carriers including the strength of transverse watertight bulkheads, especially when the ship carries high density cargoes and the damage stability of bulk carriers in the flooded condition. In this study, statistics and causes of accidents of bulk carriers are analyzed in order to identify special features of bulk carrier accident and causes of the casualty. This study examines certain cases of hull collapses and severence which resulted in sinking to infer possible causes of missing ships.

In this paper, an X-band power amplifier using GaAs FET was designed and fabricated, which is to be used as SART transmitter sweeping at the frequency range of 9.2 GHz~9.5 GHz. The amplifier is consist of two stages using ATF-46101 FET of Hewllett-Packard. Finally, the amplifier using microstrip line matching solution shows that MAG is 23 dB at the center frequency of 9.35 GHz.

This research aims to seek active control of ball-beam position stability by resorting to neural networks whose layers are given bias weights. The controller consists of an LQR (linear quadratic regulator) controller and a neural networks controller in parallel. The latter is used to improve the responses of the established LQR control system, especially when controlling the system with nonlinear factors or modelling errors. For the learning of this control system, the feedback-error learning algorithm is utilized here. While the neural networks controller learns repetitive trajectories on line, feedback errors are back-propagated through neural networks. Convergence is made when the neural networks controller reversely learns and controls the plant. The goals of teaming are to expand the working range of the adaptive control system and to bridge errors owing to nonlinearity by adjusting parameters against the external disturbances and change of the nonlinear plant. The motion equation of the ball-beam system is derived from Newton's law. As the system is strongly nonlinear, lots of researchers have depended on classical systems to control it. Its applications of position control are seen in planes, ships, automobiles and so on. However, the research based on artificial control is quite recent. The current paper compares and analyzes simulation results by way of the LQR controller and the neural network controller in order to prove the efficiency of the neural networks control algorithm against any nonlinear system.

This paper aims, first to analyse the profitability of coastal passenger ships deployed on both subsidized and non-subsidized routes, ie competitive routes, in Korea, second to evaluate them by route, by ship type, and by ship size, and finally to identify whether the ships deployed on subsidized routes are justifiable to receive subsidy from the government. They are followed by the analyses on the profitability of all ships on the coastal routes and their dependence rate of subsidy. The research covers the period of 1995-1997. The research results say that 35% of the total subsidized routes has more than 90% of subsidy dependence rate and that some monopolized routes among subsidized ones with moderate rate of profitability need to be crossed out from the list of subsidy beneficiary. In addition, some ships deployed are not appropriate type in terms of characteristics of route and traffic. One of implications drawn from this study is that the government has to set up a watchdog to monitor subsidized routes, which enables to make them competitive and save the budget.

Capital cost of ships for advanced maritime countries is generally regarded as an international cost, which is, or can be, irrelevant with respect to the nationality of shipowners. However, Korean shipowners have been not only forced by national laws and regulations to build their ships at Korean shipyards, but also restricted to access to foreign financial markets. Having said that, as far as Korean shipowners are concerned, the capital cost has become a national cost. Consequently, it causes them to lower International competitiveness. This paper aims to identify the causes deteriorating international competitiveness of Korean shipping with reference to capital costs and suggest constructive proposals.

The importance of service quality in any service industry cannot be disputed. Shippers have increased expectations concerning the quality of shipping service they receive and carriers are struggling to meet these expectations. This struggle between shipper and carriers would suggest that there is room to improve much more understandings of how shipper define shipping service quality in the carriers' perspectives. This is an empirical investigation and study on the measurement of customer response and service quality as perceived by customer in the international transportation logistics system. The purpose of this study is to clarify factors of shipping service quality on the basis of service marketing concept. In order to fulfill the objectives, this paper combined research tools that include both empirical study and documentary research. Data was gathered from 132 freight forwarder by the use of questionnaire. In this study, the established hypotheses were generated on the basis of the service quality evaluation model(SERVQUAL, SERVPERF, and EP) and Gap model.
