Ferry Golden Jindo collided with Ferry Princess near the No.7 light buoy of Incheon Port No.1 Passage in restricted visibility due to dense fog. The result was that Ferry Golden Jindo got a hole at the starboard midship section shell plating and Ferry Princess sustained damages at the starboard bow and 25 persons injured The aim of this paper is to investigate this collision accident, to clarify its causes, and to prevent such accident from occurring again In short, this collision resulted from Princess' high speed in restricted visibility, Golden Jindo's carelessness of watchkeeping, lack of proper safety training of crew, lack of instruction of supervisor, carelessness af PTMS Center and indifference of Korea Shipping Association, etc.

The purpose of this study is to explore the concept of a logistics hub, identify key factors and milestones for its development, and give some recommendations and implications to developing countries. For this the countries competing to be Logistics hub in Northeast Asia (NEA), such as South Korea, japan and China, are taken into consideration These countries have under its priority policies the development of a logistics hub vision to become the central area of the region achieving microeconomic and macroeconomic prosperity. Based on the review of the relevant literature, five factors came up as key determinants for the development of a hub project: 1. Logistics services support and infrastructure. 2. Business environment. 3. Economic determinants. 4. Political support and 5. Access to international markets. These are going to be analyzed together with its different variables, using statistical methods.

In this paper, we propose a human model for analysing the human work pattern or human fault, where a gantry crane simulator is used to survey the property cf human operation From the input and output cf gantry crane response, we make a human operation model by using conventional ARX identification method To identify the human model, we assume the eight inputs and two outputs. By using the achieved input/output data, we estimate the parameters of ARX for the human work model. To verify the proposed method, we compared the real data with the modeled data, where three kinds of work trajectory path are used

For a long time, genetic algorithms have been recognized as a new method to solve difficult and complex problems and the performance of genetic algorithms depends on genetic operators, especially crossover operator. Various problems like the traveling salesman problem, the transportation problem or the job shop problem, in logistics engineering can be modeled as a sequencing problem This paper proposes modified genetic crossover operators to be used at various sequencing problems and uses the traveling salesman problem to be applied to a real world problem like the delivery problem and the vehicle routing problem as a benchmark problem Because the proposed operators use parental information as well as network information, they could show better efficiency in performance and computation time than conventional operators.

We suggest a cast Alnico magnet as a new microwave absorber. The proposed Alnico microwave absorber shows advanced microwave absorption properties of 24 dB at 13.3 GHz for the thicknesses of 1 mm We also investigated the effects of the carbon, which qjfects strongly to microwave absorption in Alnico magnet microwave absorbers. Central frequency shifts toward lower frequency with increasing Alnico content which is related to the frequency to show tan 8 > 1. Also, we investigated the sample thickness dependence on the microwave absorption properties.

During the period of every summer to early autumn seasons, ships have been wrecked or grounded from effect of a typhoon in the water areas around Korean Peninsula Typhoon Rusa killed more than 100 people in September 2002. Super Typhoon Maemi passed southeast of South Korea in September 12-13, 2003, with a strong gale blowing at a record 60 m/s and caused much ship groundings, collisions and sinkings over 3000 in dockyards, harbors and places of refuge. These are things that could have been prevented had there merely been prior warning. This study outlines the occurrence characteristics of maritime accidents caused by a typhoon in South Korea for the period from 1962 to 2002. The distribution of the accident records is also compared with the trajectories, winds, central pressures of typhoons, passed during the 1990-2003. It is shown that attack frequency of typhoon and number of marine accidents is the highest in August and the marine accidents due to typhoon have a close relation to the distribution of accumulated wind and pressure fields.

Maritime safety is influenced by several factors, for example, technical factors, human factors and operational factors. To improve maritime safety, each country should identify which factors will bring about a marine accident. This case study approached statistical method to find out correlations between marine accidents and safety records in Korean merchant fleet. There were no statistical significance between marine accident rate and PSC detention rate and human factor rate. But there was statistically significant relationship between marine accident rate and PSC inspection rate. It is possible to presume that in the developing country the stronger the government shows its will, the less such accidents occur.

As the international society becomes more and more open, the international marine transportation demand is growing. And the growth of international tour demands and the developments of new passenger ship routes make the role of passenger terminals crucial. In this context this study analyzes and compares the terminals of Korea and Japan and defines design criteria for the construction of a passenger terminal. As a result of this study, it is proposed that an urban context, an architectural type and spatial characteristics be taken into account for the construction cf a passenger terminal. The ultimate purpose cf this study is to build a future-oriented international passenger terminal based on the result of this study, which will lead the ocean culture.
