The minimum temperatures are important element in the daily human life, the climatic classification, and so on. In this study, the authors aim to make an analysis the distribution characteristics of minimum temperatures of 95 weather stations in Korea by using the Climatological Standard Normals of Korea VolumeI, VolumeII, and the Climatological Standard Normals of North Korea. The important results are as follows 1) The daily, fifthly, and tenthly minimum temperatures show the highest rate of occurrance on 14th of January( Occurrance rate : 56.6% ), 16~20th of January( 37.6% ), and the middle ten days of January( 82.1% ) respectively. 2) In the regional distribution of minimum temperatures in winter, the values of northern part, inland area, and west coastal region are lower than those of southern, coastal, and east coastal regions respectively. And, bigger cities and industrial area( Seoul, Incheon, Daejeon, Daegu, etc. ) have larger values than the its vicinities. 3) When the daily minimum temperature is 0℃ and less, the days of northern part, inland area, and wests coastal region are higher than those of southern, coastal, and east coastal regions respectively.

The purpose of this study is to provide against to the meteorological disasters in Korea caused by the typhoons by means of the statistical analyses for the relation between the intensities of the typhoons and the meteorological disasters. The data are extracted from the "TYPHOON REPORT OF KOREA" and the "TYPHOON WHITE BOOK" issued by the Central Meteorological Office. The results are summarized as follows : (1) The annual mean frequency and the total number of the typhoon causing the disasters during 30 years (1956∼1985) are 2.2, 65 respectively, and the highest number appears in August followed by September and the third is July. And the degrees of themeteorolgocal disasters are alsio the same order. (2) The more serious disasters occurred by the TS degree typhoons, and the TS degree typhoons occupy the highest frequency. (3) The more serious disasters occurred by the TS degree typhoons, and the TS degree typhoons occupy the highest frequency. (3) The meteorological disaster per typhoon is most severe in August, and the July and September are alike in the degree of the disasters per typhoon. (4) The meteorological disasters are approximately a proportional relation to the intensities of the typhoons. (5) The frequency of the Rain typhoon , Wind typhoon and Rain·Wind typhoon are about 2 : 1: 3 in July, August and September respectively. And the severe disasters occur more frequently by the Rain typhoon than by the Wind typhoon.

A study on the changes of the oceanographical environment caused by Mokpo coastal zone development was carried out. Special emphasis was placed on the clarification of the water level changes and coastal current structure and influence of the environmental factors on the coastal area. In order to understand the structure oceangraphical environemnt, such as water temperature, salinity, suspended solids, pH, dissolved oxygen, chemical oxygen demand, biochemical oxygen demand, distribution of bottom sediment, tide and current were measured. To investigated the structure of tide and current for the future development, a numerical analysis was carried out. In certain zones, it was found to be flooding problems near the lowlying commercial area.

The cooling degree days and the number of cooling days are used as important research materials not only in the field of design for building and cooling facilities but also in the government's establishment of energy policy. The purposes of this dissertation are to clarify the distribution of the cooling degree days and the number of cooling days by using the daily mean air temperature of 95 weather stations in Korea, and to show the distribution charts of the same cooling degree days and the same number of cooling days in order to help the practical uses of the materials. In cases of the base temperatures 24circC, 25circC, 26circC, and 27circC, the cooling degree days and the number of cooling days are shown in Table 5. The distribution charts of the same cooling degree days and the same number of cooling days are shown in Fig. 6 to Fig. 8 and Fig.9 to Fig. 11 respectively. As a result of this dissertation, Jeju Island and southern inland regions(especially Jeonju, Daegu, Gwangju) have a larger value than central regions and northern regions because of the influences of the terrain effect, and western coast regions have usually a larger value than eastern coast regions at the same latitude. The largest value appears in August of the year and the second in July, and the smallest in September. And southern inland area surrounded by Imshil, Goechang, and Boeun has a much smaller value than the other areas of its vicinity.

In cold season, the developed extratropical cyclones and associated cold fronts, and NW winter monsoon are encountered very frequently in the North Pacific, especially in the northwest part of it. The two sea areas, namely, the northwest part of North Pacific, especially the eastern area far off Japan east coast, and Burmuda Triangle in the North Atlantic are generally known as two of the most dangerous areas in the world because of high incidence of sea casualties. Even large ocean going vessels were sunk frequently due to strong winds and very high seas caused by NW monsoon or developed cyclones during the winter months. The purpose of this paper is to analyse the real state of heavy weather and high sea phenomena on the vesscls at sea, thus helping mariners operate in such conditions.

A two dimensional numerical model as well as theoretical formula are used to investigate the seich characteristics of Mok-po harbour. The natural periods of the first two modes computed from the numerical mode are about 34 minutes and 12 minutes which are well consistent with those by the theoretical formula.

In cold season, ice accretion on ship, drift ice, NW winter monsoon, developed extratropical cyclones and associated cold fronts, in warm season, tropical cyclones and dense sea fogs, are encountered very frequently in the North Pacific, especially in the northwest part of it. The two areas, namely, the northwest part of the North Pacific and Burmuda Triangle in the North Atlantic are generally known as most dangerous areas in the world because its high incidence of sea cascualities. In recent years, the small fisherboats operating in the northern seas were frequently sunk in a group as they encountered ice accretion or drift ice. And ocean going vessels were also sunk frequently due to strong winds and very high seas in winter monsoon or developed cyclones and cold fronts. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the real state of heavy weather conditions such as ice accretion on ship drift, ice, typhoons and sea fogs, and also to analyse the effect of these heavy weather phenomena on the vessels at sea, thus helping mariners operate in such heavy weather conditions.

In the North Pacific Ocean a lot of large waves set up in winter, affected by continued winds and swells owing to severe extratropical cyclones. Under this sea condition, if the ship is about 100,000L/T (in deadweight capacity tonnage), we can't find the danger involved in the ship at sea apparently. But when we compare the seaworthiness of ship's building strength with the stress given to the hull by waves, we can't insist that the former be more stronger than the latter. As a result, VLCC is in danger of destroying and cutting for lack of longitudinal strength in heavy weather. Up to this time, Naval Architects have actively studied the relation between ship's longitudinal strength and waves as a ship's projector; however, actually, they have never made more profound study on the problem of longitudinal strength in relation to navigation. The main puprpose of this thesis is to clarify these vivid actual states of ship's trouble unknown to ship's masters. In this thesis we picked up VLCC Pan Yard, a vessel of Pan Ocean Bulk Carrier company's, as a model ship. And in the North Pacific Ocean, we have chosen for this research the basins where the wind speed and the wave height are greater than average. The data used this thesis are quotes from the "winds and waves of the North Pacific Ocean('64-'73)", and wind speed more than 30 knots was made use of as an ocject of this study. By usinh the ITTC wave spectrum, we found out the significant waves for every 5 knots within the range of 20 knots to 45 knots of wind speed. According to this H1/1000 was calculated. The stress of ship's hull is determined by ship's speed and wave height. We compared the ship's longitudinal strength with a planned wave height by rules of several famous classification societies in the world. In the last analysis, we found out that ship's present planned strength in heavy weather is not enough. Finally we made a graph for avoiding heavy weather, with which we studied safe ship's handling in the North pacafic Ocean in winter.

Spatial and temporal variations of hydrography and currents are investigated in the Southeastern Sea of Korea during October 1982. The distribution of the water mass of high salinity (〉34.40‰) and low dissolved oxygen concentration (〈5.0ml/l) indicates that the Tsushima current flows northward as it passes the Western Channel of the Korea Strait. The cold water (〈6.0℃) with low salinity (〈34.20‰) and high dissolved oxygen concentration (〉6.0ml/l) reaches the bottom of the western channel of the Korea Strait after flowing southward leaning against the slope rather than following the deepest part of the Channel. Repeated sections in the Korea Strait show a remarkable change of hydrographic structure over a period of 4 days ; both warn and cold waters are intensified, particularly in the eastern part of the strait toward the Tsushima Island.

As far as ship's cargo handling devicesareconcerned, the derrick system has been used comprehensively in the marine. Even though there are several new devices for ship's cargo gear, such as gantry crane, jib crane adn self unloader, the derrick system, with its improved rigging method, still retains its utmost reputations among ship's owners. Therefore the method of calculating the system's militating stresses in the course of cargo operation needs to be more convenient and analytical. Here the author attempts to introduce the calculating method of stresses by means of vector analysis. The calculating method is able to analyze the stresses acting in every part of the cargo gear systems, such as union purchase, slewing or its modified system.

The climate of a given region is determined by the combination of the various climatic elements. But among them, the temperature is the most important element to classify the climatic type. The author attempted to classify the climatic types in Korea by making a analysis of the characteristics of temperature distribution. To accomplish the study, the author analyzed the daily and yearly range of temperature, the warmest and coldest months, continentality and oceanicity, thermal anomaly, and relative temperature, etc. The data of 153 weather stations are used for the analysis of the above five criteria. As a result of the study, the climate of Korea can be divided into three types, namely, the continental, coastal and intermediate(or transitional) type. The Pronounced continental type is appeared in the northern part of highland area. And the coastal type is limited to the east and south coast areas, and the southern part of the west coast area. The continentality is larger, and the oceanicity smaller, than those of Siberia, Mongolia and the inland area of China where the continental climate is most remarkable in the world. The reason why the west coast area is more continental than the east coast area may be due to the terrain effect and the warm current going north along the east coastline.
