The developmental biology and morphological characteristics of the immature stages of Hypolimnas bolina were studied in the laboratory using host plant, Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam. This species has six larval stadia, with an egg period of 2.4 ± 0.54 days, a larval period of 16.8 ± 2.3 days, and a pupal period of 10 ± 1 days. It takes approximately 30 days to mature from egg to adult. Illustrations and descriptions of the various immature stages and their behaviors are provided.

Developmental characteristics of immature stages of Ostrinia scapulalis (Lepidoptera: Crambidae), which is a main insect pest against legume crops, were investigated at constant temperatures to prepare fundamental data for integrated pest management. Egg, larva and pupa could survive at temperatures from 16oC to 36oC. Developmental periods of those stages became shorter with increasing temperature between 16 and 31oC, 16 and 36oC, and 16 and 34oC, respectively. The lower developmental thresholds and degree-days(DD) were determined as 13.0oC and 56.9DD, 13.8oC and 277.5DD, and 14.2oC and 90.8DD using a linear regression model between temperature and development rate. Other parameters for explaining development of this species were estimated using a few non-linear models for developmental rate, distribution, and survivorship.

The developmental biology and morphological characteristics of the immature stages of Argynnis nerippe were studied in the laboratory using host plant, Viola papilionacea. Dormancy of the first instar larvae was broken when exposed in summer-like conditions (25 ± 1℃ and continuous illumination of 5000-7000 lux). Feeding began within 1-2 days after awakening. This species has six larval stadia and individuals take ca. 60 days (excluding dormancy) to mature from egg to adult. Illustrations and descriptions of the various immature stages and their behaviors are provided.

Ostrinia zaguliaevi (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) causes serious damage to pods and stems of the red bean, Vigna angularis, during the second half of the reproductive developmental stage. The temperature-dependent development studies of O. zaguliaevi were performed at several constant temperatures ranging from 7℃ to 36℃ in the laboratory, in the purpose of making temperature-dependent development models in the future. Eggs and larvae of O. zaguliaevi could not develop at lower temperatures of 7~13℃. As the temperature increased, the developmental period of the immature stage decreased. The number of larval instar was variable from 5 to 8, depending on temperature. The minimum number of larval instar was observed at only 25℃. Some larvae of colonies maintained at 16~22℃ showed highly longer developmental period. At relatively higher temperatures, 34℃ and 36℃, the larval developmental rates were not slowed down, and the larval survival rates was relatively high, above 60%. The egg mortality was relatively high at 36℃. Using these temperature-dependent development data of O. zaguliaevi, preliminary linear regression equations were estimated to look for a relationship between temperature and developmental rate in egg and larval stages.

The genus Lilioceris Reitter, 1912, containing generally thirty species of two subgenera, is distributed Oriental regions (Gressit and Kimoto, 1961). Seven species were recorded in Korea (Lee and An, 2001). Many of them are important pests on medicinal plants and garden flowers (lily, yam, etc). There have been a few studies on the adult taxonomy of Korean Lilioceris (Gressitt and Kimoto, 1961; An et al., 1986; An and Kwon, 1995, An, 1995, 1996, 1998, Lee and An, 2001). Although the main damage to the plants is caused by their larvae, nothing is known about the immature stages of Korean Lilioceris. L. (L.) ruficollis is associated with the host plants of Dioscorea (Dioscoreaceae), especially D. septemioba which is a well-known medicinal plant in Korea. In the present paper, detailed descriptions and illustrations of the immature stages of L. (L.) ruficollis are provided for the first time. Some remarks on their biology are also given.

Oral toxicities of 5 Photorhabdus temperata ssp. temperata (Ptt) strains collected in different regions of Korea were determined against the larvae of Plodia interpunctella, Galleria mellonella, Lucilia caesar, Culex pipiens pallens and Paratlanticus ussuriensis. When a diet or water containing culture media of 5 different Ptt strains were ingested to immature insects, mortalities of the first instar larvae of G. mellonella, L. caesar, P. ussuriensis and young nymphs of C. pipiens pallens were rapidly increased and 100% within 3-5 days after treatments. However, mortality of P. interpunctella neonate larvae was slightly slower and 94.4-100% within 7 days after treatments. As controls, a diet containing either water, the medium without culturing bacteria, or E. coli culture medium did not effective on their mortalities. As another control group, the culture medium of P. temperata ssp. laumondii (KACC) were variously effective to mortalities of 4 species, namely, 100, 45.3, 2.8 and 0% to Galleria, Lucilia, Plodia and Culex, respectively. Culture media of Ptt strains inhibited developmental late of late larvae of P. interpunctella. Our results suggest that the oral administration of the culture medium of Ptt symbiotic bacteria was highly effective to control various immature insects.

The growing oocytes become progressively capable of resuming meiosis, and full meiotic competence appear when they are about 80% of the size of fully grown oocytes. As hormonal influences vary at different stages of reproductive cycle, the size of oocytes may vary according to the reproductive stages. The present study was designed to compare the diameter between the ovulated and freshly collected immature canine oocytes. The ovulated oocytes were collected 72 hr after ovulation by oviductal tube flushing by laparotomy under general anesthesia. Immature oocytes were collected by ovarian slicing method. Diameter of all oocytes was measured directly using epiflurescence microscope with a calibrated micro-eyepiece micrometer at ×200 magnification. The thickness of zona pellucida and diameter of cytoplasm were measured separately and recorded. A total of 2209 zona intact oocytes were collected, among them 628 from anestrus, 675 from follicular, 838 from luteal and 68 by fallopian tubes flushing methods. The average number of oocytes was 104.7, 168.8, 119.7 and 11.3 for anestrus, follicular, luteal and fallopian tubes flushing methods, respectively. The average diameters of the ooplasm and oocyte were significantly varied in different reproductive stages as well as with ovulated oocytes (P<0.05). The average diameter of ooplasm and oocyte was 115.6 and 127.7, 143.0 and 162.0, 134.6 and 150.6, 159.6 and 185.6 for anestrus, follicular, luteal and ovulated oocytes, respectively. Highest number of oocytes with larger diameter could be collected from the follicular and luteal stages. In conclusion, the follicular and luteal ovaries are the best sources of oocytes for canine IVM.
