Chilli (Capsicum spp.) is essential to Sri Lanka’s agricultural economy and household nutrition. However, the sector faces ongoing challenges, including low dry chilli productivity, pest and disease pressures particularly from the chilli leaf curl complex and a heavy dependence on expensive imported dried chillies. To tackle these issues, the Sri Lankan Department of Agriculture (DOA) and the Field Crops Research & D evelopment I nstitute ( FCRDI) developed MICH Hy1, a high-yielding, p est-resistant hybrid chilli variety suited to local conditions. From 2019 to 2021, the ‘KOPIA Chilli Project’ initiated a participatory hybrid seed production initiative in Kothmale, involving farmers in a decentralized seed system utilizing insect-proof net houses and capacity-building programs. This collaborative approach has successfully enhanced seed quality, improved farmers’ incomes, increased the availability of affordable hybrid seeds, and reduced reliance on imported varieties. The initiative highlights the potential of farmer-led hybrid seed systems to strengthen national seed security, empower rural communities, and promote sustainable chilli cultivation in Sri Lanka.

This study aimed to analyze the investment feasibility of the poultry model village project at the KOPIA Kenya Center of the Rural Development Administration. To achieve this objective, the study examined the effect on improving farm household income and conducted the Benefit-Cost analysis. The survey conducted one-on-one interviews with farmers who participated in the pilot project using the difference-in-difference method. The pilot project yielded an increase of 43,585 shillings(≒475,076 \)/ year per household in comparison to the conventional farms. The B/C ratio was 6.0, indicating a high level of investment performance.

The food problem is one of the big issues causing international crisis. Especially, the food crisis is deep in Middle Africa, southern part of the Sahara Desert. Korea has started to help agricultural development of the developing countries. Since 2009, Rural Development Administration(RDA) has established the KOPIA(Korea Project on International Agriculture) Center in 15 countries of Asia, Africa and South America. This study aims to introduce the process of establishment and development of KOPIA Center for agricultural research in Democratic Republic of the Congo. D.R. Congo has relatively vast land resource and development potential, but they are very poor and deficient in food supply. D.R. Congo is interested in agricultural development. It needs high technology and capital investment from Korea. KOPIA Center in D.R. Congo was established at the University of Kinshasa(UNIKIN). UNIKIN does not have enough facilities for research to develop agricultural technology. Therefore, we started to build the farm land and other facilities for research at mountain area in the UNIKIN campus. The research subjects were selected to maize and potato among food crops, and tomato and cucumber among vegetables. The subjects to develop the agricultural cooperation project between Korea and D.R. Congo are as follows; it is necessary to recognize that the agricultural technology aid for developing countries is one of the national concerns. It is also necessary to develop the technology suitable to the country, and to develop the human resource for foreign agriculture development. This project is important to strengthen the potential of overseas food production base for Korea.
