The production using U-shaped line is studied. This research presents the relationship among machining time, cycle time and production rate in a U-shaped line. The U-shaped line produces shafts by automated machines. In this paper when any production rate is given the U-shaped line always satisfies the production rate. An algorithm is developed for the determination of cycle time, the number of machines and workers of the U-shaped line in order to minimize the total machine capacity and the number of workers for any given production rate. The U-shaped line was successfully designed by applying the proposed algorithm.

Multiple U-typed production lines are increasingly accepted in modern manufacturing system for the flexibility to adjust to changes in demand. This paper considers multiple U line balancing with the objective of minimizing cycle time considering of moving time of workforce given the number of workstation. Like the traditional line balancing problem this problem is NP-hard. In this paper, we show how genetic algorithm can be used to solve multiple U line balancing. For this, an encoding and a decoding method suitable to the problem are presented. Proper genetic operators are also employed. Extensive computational experiments are carried out to show the performance of the proposed algorithm. The computational results show that the algorithm is promising in solution quality.

In order to study the antitumoral effect of Selaginella tamariscina extracts, the cytotoxicities to human histiocytic leukemia cells (U937) and lymphocyte were measured by MTT method. The water extract of Selaginella tamariscina was partitioned into chloroform (CHCl₃), ethylacetate (EtAc), n-butanol (BuOH) and water (H₂O), successively. CHCl₃, EtAc and BuOH fractions of Selaginella tamariscina showed the cytotoxicity to the U937 cells but they had no effect on the cytotoxicity of lymphocyte under the same conditions. The tumor-specific cytotoxicity of Selaginella tamariscina fractions might have been attributed to their genotoxic effect on actively proliferating cells. The expression of p53 tumor suppressor gene was then evaluated by northern blotting. The increased expression of p53 was induced by Selaginella ramariscina fraction V but no expression of p53 was induced by CHCl₃, EtAc, and BuOH fractions of Selaginella tamariscina. These results suggested that the increased expression of p53 induced by Selaginella tamariscina water extract (fraction V) should be required for the cytotoxicity on U937 and the other fractions of Selaginella tamariscina mediated the U937 disruption.
