Currently, many complaints have been filed by local residents on helicopter noise while the law on noise prevention and damage compensation at military airfields and military ranges has been in effect since November 27, 2020. The airfields operated by state agencies are inevitably used to defend the country, defend the country, and protect the lives of the people, but various efforts are needed to minimize noise complaints. In general, helicopters operating in a specific area exhibit different noise frequencies depending on the number or size of wings for each type, takeoff speed, and takeoff altitude. Therefore, by measuring and analyzing noise in the take-off stage of a number of helicopters operating in a specific area, this study aims to present more effective noise prevention measures by analyzing the compliance of each type of helicopter with variables such as take-off speed, take-off altitude, and rise rate. Therefore, the results of this study will be significant in terms of resolving complaints and reducing compensation expenditures of local residents around the airport.
PURPOSES : The purpose of this study is to estimate the reduction of traffic noise in a double-layered specific porous pavement based on the traffic speed variation.
METHODS : The close-proximity method was used in noise measurement, and the running speed was measured at 10 km/h and from 50 to 80 km/h.
RESULTS : From the quantitative analysis, it was found that the double-layered porous pavement reduced by 9.4 dB (A) on the average and 9.16 dB (A) at a 95% confidence level.
CONCLUSIONS : The use of porous pavements have been recommended to minimize traffic noise. In this study, it is quantitatively demonstrated that the double-layered porous pavement can reduce the traffic noise by more than 9.0 dB(A).
PURPOSES: This paper presents the noise reduction effect of asphalt concrete pavement using steel slag aggregate.
METHODS: Steel slag aggregates induce various mechanical effects because of their high stiffness and specific gravity. It is also known that the noise reduction effect is due to its high specific gravity and porous nature. In this study, the noise reduction in a steel slag asphalt concrete pavement section was measured and analyzed.
RESULTS : On average, an asphalt concrete pavement with steel slag reduces road traffic noise by about 2 dB(A). In addition, the analysis of sound pressure levels by frequency showed lower sound pressure levels in steel slag asphalt concrete pavement than general HMA in all frequency ranges (from low to high frequencies). An analysis of the benefits with regard to noise, by assuming a road-traffic noise reduction of 2 dB(A) with asphalt concrete pavement using steel slag, shows that the noise abatement cost approach can save 1.6 million won a year over soundproof wall costs. In addition, the noise damage cost approach results in cost savings (with regard to noise) of between 19 and 60 million won per year depending on the population density.
CONCLUSIONS: The use of steel slag aggregate as an asphalt concrete mixture material not only improves the mechanical performance but also has a noise reduction effect. It is expected that the steel slag asphalt concrete pavement can reduce the environmental burden by utilizing resources and provide a safer and more comfortable pavement condition to the road users.
PURPOSES : The purpose of this study is to compare noise reduction quantities between before/after two-layer low noise pavement implementation using equivalent noise level analysis and to analyze the noise reduction effects of the two layer low noise pavement with a statistical method such as the Anderson-Darling Test.METHODS: In order to compare and to analyze noise reduction effects between before/after two-layer low noise pavement implementation, data acquisition as noise levels on a roadside and an apartment rooftop was conducted in the study area. The equivalent noise level was estimated in order to compare noise reduction quantities and the Anderson-Darling Test was carried out for estimating noise reduction effects of the two-layer low noise pavement.RESULTS: The equivalent noise levels of before/after two-layer low noise pavement implementation for the roadside during the daytime are 65.355 dB and 63.520 dB and during the nighttime are 62.463 dB and 59.088 dB. The equivalent noise levels for the apartment rooftop during daytime are 57.301 dB and 59.088 dB and during the nighttime are 54.616 dB and 52.464 dB. Also two-layer low noise pavement decreased the noise reduction effects estimated with the statistical method as the Anderson-Darling test for the roadside during the daytime by around 66.68% and decreased noise reduction effects on the roadside during the nighttime by 0.70%. Moreover it reduced noise reduction effects in the apartment rooftop during the daytime and nighttime by 0% and 96.32%, respectively.CONCLUSIONS : Based on the result of this study, two-layer low noise pavement can positively affect noise reduction during both the daytime and nighttime according to the results of estimating the equivalent noise levels and the Anderson-Darling test.
It is known that air pollutants such as fine dust and exhaust gas from vehicles are harmful to human health. In particular, the black carbon emitted by vehicles is known to cause a large number of premature deaths. This study analyzed the effect of a noise barrier on the inflow amount of black carbon from a nearby high traffic road to a school area, using numerical analysis performed at two elementary schools. Also, the correlation between the noise barrier’s shape, height and the inflow amount of black carbon was assessed. As a result, it was found that the higher the noise barrier, the lower the inflow amount of black carbon observed at the school A. However, the inflow amount of black carbon at school B was not greatly influenced by the height of the noise barrier. The inflow amount of black carbon at the schools could be changed not only by the height of the noise barrier, but also by the shape, height and position of the noise barrier and the school building.
Most of the soundproof tunnels generate significant discharge noise through their inlets and outlets so that the length of the tunnel has been extended frequently than required to minimize the effect on such discharge noise. Thus, in this paper, we investigate reduction capability of discharge noise from the sound proof tunnel installed with lateral sound-absorbing panels on the partitioned truss members in the longitudinal direction of the tunnel. In conclusion, noise field analysis results shows that the sound proof tunnels with lateral sound-absorbing panels have an effect on discharge noise abatement and thereby tunnel’s length reduction.
This study explored measures to reduce noise applicable to Gimhae international airport centering on densely packed housing areas. Especially, as for measures to relieve noise damage on the densely packed housing areas in Gimhae-si, the noise reduction effect is expected to be doubled if the west runway (36L/18R) is used as the preferred runway for the 36 direction takeoff, as well as if the flight bypasses the densely packed housing areas by means of sophisticated navigation using the area navigation (RNAV) procedure based on performance-based navigation (PBN). Takeoff toward the south connects the flight path to the South Sea which has comparatively low noise impact, relieving noise damage on the densely packed housing areas (apartment complexes in Naeoe-dong of Gimhae-si, etc.) near the northern end of the runway. The operation of the runway displaced threshold is currently being implemented on the west runway (36L/18R) of Gimhae international airport. It has been found that swing landing in spring and summer when the wind blows from the south has a noise reduction effect on the noise sensitive areas at the side and end of the west runway (Gangdong-dong and Jukdong-dong of Gangseo-gu and Buram-dong of Gimhae-si, etc.).
