This study aims to determine the difference in preferred horticultural plants, horticultural activities, and stress-coping strategies based on Enneagram centers of intelligence in middle-aged women. Data from a convenience sample of 206 middle-aged women were analyzed using IBM SPSS (V. 25.0). The results indicated a statistically significant difference in preferred horticulture plants depending on the Enneagram centers of intelligence. The results also suggested that head- and heart-centered respondents preferred body-centered respondents preferred “foliage plants.” The second most preferred horticultural activities showed no statistically significant difference among the head, heart, and body. However, all three centers showed the strongest preference for “enjoying” among various horticultural activities, and the second most preferred activities differed as “harvesting” among head- and body-centered respondents, and “decorating” among heart-centered respondents. Moreover, a difference in stress-coping strategies was also observed. The head-centered respondents used the “problem-focused” strategy, heart-centered respondents used “hopeful thinking,” and the body-centered respondents used “pursuit of social support.” Thus, these results can be used as baseline data for developing therapeutic horticultural activities while considering the attributes of middle-aged women.
This study was performed to investigate the relationships among personality preferences, dietary habit and nutrient intake of University students (n=283). Mean dietary habit score was similar between sexes and was 46.1/100 in male students and 45.1/100 in female students. Average energy intake of male students was 2,019 kcal (80.8% of RDA) and that of female students was 1,675 kcal (83.7%). Male students were taking less than 90% of RDA in calcium and vitamin B2 and female students were taking less than 90% of RDA in calcium, iron, vitamin C, and vitamin A. Students preferring Judgment had significantly higher dietary habit score than students preferring Perception. Extraversion had higher nutrient intake than Introversion both in male and female students. Male students preferring Feeling had also higher nutrient intake than students preferring Thinking. Nutrient density per 1,000 kcal was higher in Thinking and Judgment than Feeling and Perception. In conclusion, students preferring Judgment and Extraversion have better dietary habit and nutrient intake than those preferring Perception and Introversion. More studies are necessary between personality preferences and dietary behavior to contribute to effective nutrition education and counseling.
A chi-square test was performed in terms of MBTI personality types and horticultural preferences, where the MBTI personality types were obtained from the predicted results from the typical expressions of the Korean Psychological Testing Institute’s self-speculation MBTI preference indicator. The analysis results were organized into two types: intuition type and sensing type. The results suggest that the intuition type preferred the herbs with fragrances, while the sensing type showed their preference towards flowering plants. Also, there were significant differences between the intuitive and sensing types with respect to ‘five senses that are the most stimulating in the horticultural process’, ‘plant characteristics’ and ‘interesting horticultural activities’, which imply that different types have different choices. In the comparison between thinking type and feeling type, the thinking type showed their interest in the overall shape of the plant, while the feeling type showed their first interest in the flowers of the plants. The result showed that thinking type and feeling type had a significant difference in terms of ‘degree of preferences in horticultural activities’, ‘initially interested plant tissues’, ‘five senses that are the most stimulating in the horticultural process’ and ‘effects of horticultural activities’. Regarding the judging type and perceiving type in their choices of plant characteristics, the judging type preferred flower plants, while perceiving type preferred herbs with fragrances. The results of self-speculation MBTI personality test showed significant differences according to the personality types, regarding the most interested plant tissue and plant characteristics, which leads to a difference in their choices.
