이 연구의 목적은 자살생각과 절망, 우울, 스트레스와의 관계를 살펴보고, 이들 간의 구조적 관계모형을 탐색하려는 것이다. 이를 위해 중ㆍ고등학교 학생 600명과 대학생 168명을 대상으로 인구사회학적 변인과 스트레스 척도, 절망 척도, 우울 척도, 자살생각 척도로 구성된 설문지를 사용하여 그 변인들 간의 관계와 특성을 탐구하였다. 연구결과, 첫째, 자살생각에 대해 청소년과 대학생 집단의 차이가 검증되었다. 둘째, 성별을 제외한 모든 변수들은 서로 유의한 상관을 가짐을 알 수 있었으며, 대처신념을 제외한 모든 척도들은 서로 양의 상관을 가지고 있었다. 또한 대처신념의 저하가 자살을 이르게 할 수 있는 위험한 변수임을 확인할 수 있었다. 셋째, 청소년 집단도 대학생 집단과 마찬가지로 우울과 절망에 대한 자살의 회귀효과가 유의하였다. 자살생각에 대한 모든 예측변수와 매개변수인 스트레스의 효과를 알아본 결과, 매개변수인 스트레스가 자살생각에 대하여 독립적인 효과를 가지고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 이 연구의 의의와 그 시사점을 논하고 제언을 제시하였다.

The purpose of this study is to investigate relationship between despair, depression, stress and suicide ideation, and to explore structural relational model between them. The subjects were 600 middle school and high school students, and 168 university students. The study method was questionnaire survey, its survey sheet composed of variable of Sociology of Population, stress scale, despair scale, depression scale, scale for suicide ideation. Using the survey sheet, The relationship between the variables and their characteristics were explored. The study results are as follows. First, difference between adolescents and university student group in suicide ideation was tested. Second, it was known that all the variables except for gender had significant correlation each other. All the scales besides responding belief had positive correlation each other. And it could be identified that decline of responding belief is a dangerous variable which can lead to suicide. Third, like university student group, adolescent group had significant regression effect of suicide about depression and despair. As a result of investigating all the predictor variables about suicide ideation and effect of suicide which is medium variable, it could be known that stress as the medium variable had independent effect for suicide ideation. The meaning of this study and its implications were discussed, and suggestions were given.
